>actively recommending new people to pick up 40k

you guys dont really do that right? I mean why would you do such a terrible thing? It would be like telling people to buy Civ Beyond Earth or something
>>
>>43472122
I just wanted some friends to play with ;_;
>>
>>43472122
Not actively, no.
It's always the case of people investigating what we're doing and asking questions about it.
>>
>>43472122

I turn people away from 40k. DnD too. I'm well respected in my gaming circles so people listen to what I say. If I say something is shit, people believe me.
>>
>>43472122
Its brutally expensive, unbalanced, and has a steep entry cost.

But if people really want to play, I'll give them advice on armies. But I encourage people to play more balanced games, like WarmaHordes, Infinity, Malifaux, chess, or Roshambo.
>>
>>43473091
>Its brutally expensive, unbalanced, and has a steep entry cost.

Maybe for manchildren and jobless faggots. If you can't afford a hobby like the typical 28mm heroic priced games, you're basically saying "what hobbies are dirt cheap and will cost me less than $100 for my entire life".

When you get into the real world and things start being measured in 100's or even 1000's, 40k isn't "brutally expensive". Cars that aren't junkyard pieces of shit are "brutally expensive". Mortgages are "brutally expensive". Musical instruments are "brutally expensive". Budgeting $50 a month and buying a box of resin toys every few months isn't brutally expensive.
>>
I never try to turn people away, but I make sure they understand what they're getting into.

What a cool enlightened gamer you must be, I bet you must attract all the gamur grills and be the GM eveyone asks for, scaring away any of the "smelly virgins" from your table
>>
>>43473091
>40k is too expensive guys, play warmahordes instead
why would you do this to people
>>
>>43473181
Cars, houses, musical instruments, are all way more useful than small plastic soldiers. Not even remotely the same.

Its like comparing buying a horse to buying a toy horse for the same price.
>>
>>43473285
>musical instruments
>more useful

Not really unless it's your livelihood. Usefulness is an irrelevant measure of the monetary value of a HOBBY, and those much higher expenses are all things real working adults are used to.
>>
>>43473283
This so much, you still need a bucket of money
At least with Warhammer fantasy you get non-baby American lore and good models

>>
>>43473285

People spend way more on video games than 40k costs.

Even if you pirate all your games, the hardware required to play them is equivalent to a decent small 40k army.
>>
>>43473306
>non-baby American lore

What the fuck does that even mean?

And are we really pretending that Fantasy had good lore? It was "generic fantasy" as fuck and the only fun bits, the Chaos Gods, were pale ripoffs of Michael Moorcock.

You don't need to be TES "snowflake" to be good
It had way more character and much better humor than wama-Denegra Gone Wild, its evil factions actually felt evil, its good factions felt noble.
Its elves had real motives other than "kill all humies, noth'n personel" and it had real grit. Warmahordes doesn't have that grit and just comes off as edgy

You seem a little defensive there brohams
I have a standing at my LGS and I have a good group thats lasted 5 years, but you don't see me posting about being a "well repsected gamur"
>>
I play the game and even I don't recommend it to newbies. At least play Kill Team. or better yet a well balanced reasonably priced game with lots of love and support. You can even use GW minis in games like Kings of War.

>>43473330
But a computer, unlike plastic soldiers, has a lot of uses especially in the modern world. Just like a house or a car.
>>
>>43472122
>>43472689

Show me one miniatures wargame that's even half as balanced as any of the big rts games.

The truth is that even the best balanced miniature game is still a pretty shit option compared to computer games if your priority is cost, competitiveness and how easy it is to find games.

People play miniature wargames for the miniatures, that's it. Except for some of those retards who play with naked plastic because they fail at life and want to play a hobby game to WIN HARDER, most people who are into 40k or other miniature games are into it because they basically really love battling with toy soldiers and enjoying the whole hobby around it. Buying, painting, modeling, converting etc. That's the selling point, and no matter how much GW sucks balls as a company they still have a lot of miniatures that make every other game look like total ass, so I'd still recommend it to anyone who wants to get into miniature gaming,
>>
>>43473352
I really liked Fantasy. It was Generic enough to be familiar, but different enough to still call to me with it's siren song.

But I'm American.

>>43472122
I suggest it. We have three days of play at my FLGS, the most behind Flames of War, which has 4 days a week. Most people aren't huge sperglords and are into it for fun. Once had two guys playing DA and Ultramarines, and the store owner walked over and started telling them how it wouldn't make sense to have that fight happening, so he went to the back and came out with his Cypher model and put it behind some bushes before telling them to continue. Everyone is kind of like that, not really taking it super seriously.
>>
>>43473600
warmahordes is "balanced" but its boring as shit

WHFB and 40k don't weigh as heavely on the stats as most people think. Its mainly luck and good deciesions. Like Miniwargaming had a series of Orks vs Tau and the scereios really favored the Tau, but the orks won EVERY one

This. All said and done Citadel has the best sculpts out there and I don't think there is a single one that is still metal, and very few are resin
>>
>>43473600
Even if other games have some broken shit they don't have turns that take 30 minutes to resolve, massive power gaps, and rules that push them into unfluffy death star lists. Warmachine and Infinity both do balance and tight rules much better than the current mess that is 40K(Or God forbid, fantasy). You can certainly build, paint, and convert for other games, even if their range isn't as large. The visual detail in some games like Bane Legions and Infinity are even better than in the models that GW makes. The figures are individually pricier but premium price for premium product after all.

At least when we aren't playing we can enjoy our model, and the price is somewhat justified in the quality of the sculpt (mine you not enough for the prices they put out). What value is a magic card?
>>
>>43475690
Why the hostility? I never said it wasn't a waste of money. In fact, I play Magic and 40k, I just felt bad that the kid's father had to foot the bill.

Warmahordes ain't balanced. Try looking at their tournament results once in a while.
>>

Kids either gonna learn some serious patience and follow through, or someone is going to get a really good deal on some partially assembled marines.
>>
>>43474839
The store owner didn't tell him that to play with a knight, he needs 3 more for the formation to be legal? Kind of a brutal.
>>
>>43475690
In fairness, while it may not apply to him cause he's only playing casual Magic, the majority of Magic cards people play with have actual value.
Can just check the Market Value of a card to see how much its worth.

Next to 40k/Fantasy in their current states it's looking pretty good. Seeing as that was the only other example they used, they might just have a low bar for TT games.

>>43479401
Find a group that plays an older edition. 2nd is charming but very different. 3/4/5 all have the same core. Early/Mid 4th had the best codexes of them, though 5th did significantly tune the core rules in a lot of places. Most 3/4/5 groups seem to houserule a combination of the editions.

Yeah I've mostly been into the models over the rules myself. Built a few armies over the years so my painting skills are pretty decent now, but I always remember how shocking they were when I started.
This is something I've always kept in mind when I've had uni mates who've been into Warhammer looking at my models and thinking of getting back into it. I first point out how expensive it is, then how much patience you need to improve your painting, and that in the end of the day it might not be worth it. If they're still keen, I'll give them as much help as I can. I'm a lost cause after all, but it's the least I can do to help people enjoy the hobby.

Cryx and Circle and certain eCaster builds are just as problematic as Eldar. Except the difference is 40k TOs have tournament packets that curb GW's retarded rules while Warmahordes has that retarded page 5.

Dawn of War was the one that got me into 40K. After I had bought Retribution in 2011, I wanted to know about these cool space marines and space elves and shit, and easily got over 600 hours in it now.

Fast forwards to now, i've got 3000 points of Iron Hands, Eldar, and Militarum Tempestus. I don't regret a thing, besides when friends come over to my house and wonder why I have paint and little plastic men.

>>
>>43480156

They did get a nerf to their teleporting stones, mostly to prevent a really janky strategy that could theoretically win you on turn one if the starts aligned in the correct way.

They'r really quick, hit hard, and do a lot of funny tricks with terrain, but they aren't broken. They are good and do place well at tournaments, but it's not like they always hog the top spot.

Even Cryx, which is generally considered the best faction, doesn't necessarily always place top either.

I tell them to look over a few games, bear in mind it's pricey and the rules get whack, but it's ultimately up to them. I enjoy painting and converting them; so, if it turns out they do as well, why should I stop them?
