No one would ever update, and the weapon would forever be +1.
Then people would be pissed because some people have a better sword, because they picked up the newer model and it started at +2.
And then people would be pissed because their new sword is only ever +3 if you pay extra money monthly, otherwise it is +1.
Also people will be pissed because they upgrade their +2, but it turns into a +1 because they "fixed" it.

Two of my players started with their ancestors weapons. Instead of having to ditch it, they could find some enchanted shard, meld it onto their weapon and make it magically stronger.
Or something.

I have been thinking lately about a magic system in which spells are just software inside people's minds, which can be connected in an internet-like system, and people can engineer "spells" like writing code. Anyone can enter this it internet-like network but if they do, they risk having their minds hijacked by worms
I still haven't got much further from the original idea
