I´m fairly new to wargames (well, actually I´ve only played some computer games like Dominions 3-4 and whatever turn based strategy came at my door, including a couple boardgame remakes like Cry Havoc). I don´t have the money, time and/or space for a big game and this manual sounds quite interesting, but I see some things that make absolutely no sense to me.
For example, he says that, in order to simplify rules in ancient warfare, javelin throwers and archers have the same shooting range. His argument is that archers shoot, while javelin throwers run up to the enemy, shoot at point blank range and then quickly retreat back to where they were.
But it seems to override the need to have both archers and peltasts unless maybe because of the ammo vs damage choice - and this far he hasn´t said anything about ammo.
Doesn´t this simplification override the javelin main disadvantage, which is having to get so close to the guy you´re trying to kill? Roman infantry had pilla, and they´d be able to fire back at the peltasts (even if it´d be more productive to throw them at charging infantry). But here the skirmishers don´t have to get close, so they´d be able to freely shoot at the legionaries without being shot back, because they have the range of an archer.
They also don´t have to risk getting out into the open and far away from their lines, which could maybe make them vulnerable to the Roman archers, who are somewhere else.
But then again, I´m a complete newbie and can´t really judge it.
