It is 224 years since the Battle of the Wabash, also known as St Clair's Defeat and the Battle of a Thousand Slain. It was fought in what is now the state of Ohio, between the United States and the Western Confederacy of American Indians, as part of the Northwest Indian War. It is one of the worst defeats, in percentage of casualties, suffered by the United States Army, and was also the largest victory ever won by American Indians.

The Indians were led by Little Turtle of the Miamis. The war party numbered more than 1,000 warriors, including Shawnees, Delawares and Potawatomis from eastern Michigan and the Saint Joseph. The opposing force of about 1,000 Americans was led by General Arthur St. Clair. The forces of the American Indian confederacy attacked at dawn, taking St. Clair's men by surprise. Of the 1,000 officers and men that St. Clair led into battle, only 24 escaped unharmed. As a result, President George Washington forced St. Clair to resign his post and Congress initiated its first investigation of the executive branch.

St. Clair had been ordered into the Ohio River valley by Washington to suppress the Miami, who had defeated several previous expeditions. His force consisted of the 1st and 2nd Infantry, an artillery battalion, and roughly three regiments' worth of levies and Kentucky militia. Various logistics and supply problems greatly slowed his preparations. The new recruits were poorly trained and disciplined, the food supplies substandard and the horses were of poor quality. The US force included 600 regulars, 800 conscripts and 600 militia at its peak, for a total of around 2,000 men. Desertion reduced this to around 1,486 and some 250 camp followers (wives, children, laundresses and prostitutes). Going was slow and discipline problems were severe; St. Clair, suffering from gout, had difficulty maintaining order, especially among the militia and the new levies. The force was constantly shadowed by Indians and skirmishes occasionally erupted.

By the day of the battle, St. Clair's force had been whittled down to around 1,120, including the camp followers. He had 52 officers and 868 enlisted and militia present for duty on the 3rd. The force camped on an elevated meadow, but did not construct any defensive works, even though Indians had been seen in the forest. While St. Clair's Army continued to lose soldiers, the Western Confederacy quickly added numbers. Buckongahelas led his 480 men to join the 700 warriors of Little Turtle and Blue Jacket, bringing the war party to more than one thousand warriors, including a large number of Potawatomis.

At dawn, St. Clair's force was camped near the present-day location of Fort Recovery, Ohio, near the headwaters of the Wabash River. An Indian force consisting of around 1,000 warriors, led by Little Turtle and Blue Jacket, waited in the woods while the men stacked their weapons and paraded to their morning meals. The natives then struck quickly and, surprising the Americans, soon overran their ground.

Little Turtle directed the first attack at the militia, who fled across a stream without their weapons. The regulars immediately broke their musket stacks, formed battle lines and fired a volley into the Indians, forcing them back. Little Turtle responded by flanking the regulars and closing in on them. Meanwhile, St. Clair's artillery was stationed on a nearby bluff and was wheeling into position when the gun crews were killed by Indian marksmen, and the survivors were forced to spike their guns.

Colonel William Darke ordered his battalion to fix bayonets and charge the main Indian position. Little Turtle's forces gave way and retreated to the woods, only to encircle Darke's battalion and destroy it. The bayonet charge was tried numerous times with similar results and the U.S. forces eventually collapsed into disorder. St. Clair had three horses shot out from under him as he tried in vain to rally his men.

After three hours of fighting, St. Clair called together the remaining officers and faced with total annihilation, decided to attempt one last bayonet charge to get through the Indian line and escape. Supplies and wounded were left in camp. As before, Little Turtle's Army allowed the bayonets to pass through, but this time the men ran for Fort Jefferson. They were pursued by Indians for about three miles before the latter broke off pursuit and returned to loot the camp. Exact numbers of wounded are not known, but it has been reported that execution fires burned for several days afterward.

The casualty rate was the highest percentage ever suffered by a United States Army unit and included St. Clair's second in command. Of the 52 officers engaged, 39 were killed and 7 wounded; around 88% of all officers became casualties. After two hours St. Clair ordered a retreat, which quickly turned into a rout. "It was, in fact, a flight," St. Clair described a few days later in a letter to the Secretary of War. The American casualty rate, among the soldiers, was 97.4 percent, including 632 of 920 killed (69%) and 264 wounded. Nearly all of the 200 camp followers were slaughtered, for a total of 832 Americans killed. Approximately one-quarter of the entire U.S. Army had been wiped out. Only 24 of the 920 officers and men engaged came out of it unscathed. Indian casualties were about 61, with at least 21 killed.

The number of U.S. soldiers killed during this engagement was more than three times the number the Sioux would kill 85 years later at Custer's last stand at the Battle of Little Big Horn. The next day the remnants of the force arrived at the nearest U.S. outpost, Fort Jefferson, and from there returned to Fort Washington.

The brutal battle on the banks of the Wabash is a classic muskets-and-tomahawks scenario. It's a much larger and more conventional battle than you usually get between armies of this type and period. American military buffs can try out one of the US Army's first ever battles, while fans of the American Indian warrior get a massive choice of styles and a real edge over their opponent (for once). The fact this is an actual US Army vs Indian fight also makes a notable change from the earlier colonial actions of that century.

T-64 Battle Tank: The Cold War’s Most Secret Tank (Osprey New Vanguard 223)

The T-64 tank was the most revolutionary design of the whole Cold War, designed to provide the firepower and armour protection of a heavy tank in a medium-weight design. It pioneered a host of new technologies including laminate armour, stereoscopic tank rangefinders, opposed-piston engines, smooth-bore tank guns with discarding sabot ammunition, and gun-fired guided projectiles. These impressive features meant that the Russians were loath to part with the secrets of the design, and the T-64 was the only Soviet tank type of the Cold War that was never exported. Written by an armour expert, this detailed technical history sheds light on the secrets behind the Cold War's most controversial tank, revealing how its highly advanced technologies proved to be both a blessing and a curse.

I know some of us like tiny tanks, what rules do you guys use for tiny tanks?

I've heard from /hwg/ about using FoW with unchanged distances, but with 6mm scale tanks, and I know panzer8 on weebly, but what other tank games do you guys play with 10mm and smaller tanks?

Does anyone else here choose what game they like based on how "interesting" the miniatures look rather than how good the rules etc are? Like I'd rather play bolt action or FoW than any napoleon era game because I'm just not interested in that stuff, regardless of what game is "better"

Also, are there any games like x-wing but with jet fighters instead?

X-Wing's rules system is (I believe) an evolution of Wings of Glory/Wings of War, which cover the World Wars, no jets though.

I'm not really an expert on X-Wing, but from what I know of it, something like Air War C21 or Mercenary Air Squadron would be your best bet.

Sorry for the dumbass noob question but I was wondering what a good WWII game for me would be. I'm looking for something I can get into relatively cheap, and that allows me to customize units to an autistic degree.
>>
>>43472044
>I'm looking for something I can get into relatively cheap, and that allows me to customize units to an autistic degree.
You can try Five Men in Normandy.
It's a skirmisher with a heavy focus on narrative. So while your autistic customization isn't necessarily about their equipment you can give them backstories, political motivations etc. There's even a rule for guys that have made a girlfriend in there.
Those rules are optional though, so you can make it as rpg-ish as you want.

Can't really tell you much about the other games as I haven't played them though the most popular ones seem to be Bolt Action and Force on Force.
I kind of think of Bolt Action as the 40k of historical gaming. It has a different activation sequence though, it uses dice to randomly determine activations.
Force on Force also has a reaction based activation thing, but it seems to be one of those things you have to play to understand.

All of those are in the Library in the OP if you wanna take a look.
>>
>>43472044
How autistic? in a Historical sense or game sense?
>>
>>43472224
Wow, that sounds awesome, I had no idea any sort of thing existed.
>>43472254
I haven't played much 40k but being able to decide gear for each unit and having tons of interchangeable parts for the miniatures is really appealing. So mostly in that sense, but having rules for specific historical units would be cool too.
>>
>>43472323
theres Bolt Action for the gamey side, but things like Disposable Heroes or the Battlegroup games are better for a historical sense.

There's really nothing in historicals that approaches 40K in the levels of autistic customization, but yeah, Bolt Action. The rules are way better written, but you'll want to grab the "season 2" rules that were linked a thread or two ago, they fix some of the worst problems of the game.

Five men in normandy would be much cheaper, because there's like 4-6 dudes per side.

I have a few of these photos with modern Russian forces.

Personally I have a 1/72 hind and a kamov. 1/72 is a pretty shitty scale for moderns, but we just play a fast paced skirmish, 2-3 vehicles per side + a few infantry stands. Games are pretty quick: things die fast in the modern war environment.

I´m starting a 20mm (or 1/72) modern project with a buddy of mine. It´ll be small-scale platoon+ skirmish probably, so there´s no need for huge armies.
I´ll assemble and field a modern "Russian" force, consisting of Elhiem minis: A platoon of "little green men" aka Russian mechanized infantry, supported by indigenious irregulars from the Novorossian Self Defence Forces. Today my 1/72 T-72B with ERA from Modelcollect arrived and I´m starting to paint it later today. Really looking forward to this project. Now I just need to find good BTR-80s and BMP-2s in 1/72 scale...

Can anyone who understands bolt action explain some points costs to me?

In the base book, a regular experience tiger 1 costs 555 points. A veteran costs 666.

In Tank War, Whittman's Veteran Tiger 1 with an ungodly number of upgrades and bonus abilities only costs 519 points.

When were points adjusted down on the heavy tanks and where can I find the updates?
>>
>>43481311
That's weird, must be some anomaly with Wittman? Maybe 519 is the extra points you pay for the upgrades and bonus abilities?
>>
>>43481805
Then he'd be more than 1000 points - that's tad too much.

Maybe it's in the FAQ/errata, I'd recommend checking them for >>43481311 anon.
>>
>>43481805
Not just him-- Kurt Knispel's Veteran Tiger 1 is also listed at 519 pts.

The unique Panther and Jagdtiger are each well above the standard costs, but the cost listed is presented as total cost.

The only points revision in the errata I can find relates to the Sherman,

Five Men in Normandy is such a characterful little system. I've had a lot of fun messing around with the character generation and campaign mechanisms, just to see where the narrative goes. I wish I'd kept copies of the AARs I wrote for the thread.

I've also modded it a fair bit, ran a couple of games set in 1970's Northern Ireland back at the start of summer.

Well, I wasn't trolling - and seeing how you need to apply this stuff, and not just paint it on (and then again, Vallejo tends to overlive Citadel, simply because Citadel's pots can't be closed properly, and there's always ton of pain gets stuck on the side of the top), it'll run out faster. I've used up some Citadel and Vallejo paints since I'm doing this, but the latter usually had a longer life because of the pot, and because it has 4 more mls in them.

Stuff is like a thick paste you just brush it on, and you have your base basically done. I like to either drybrush it or apply wash (or sometimes both) to get the desired effect. See pic related, only drybrushed.

You can tell someone bothered to put effort into setting up there.

Even if individual bits might not be amazing, a good layout and having a lot of bits of terrain that work together does so much better than >>43489463 and it's absolutely utterly half-arsed awful, just thrown down to fill space. No effort put into it, no expense bothered with.

Tried to ask /his/ but was told to ask here.

How plausible are the events of team yankee? Could a limited conventional war ending with two nuclear strikes(one hitting NATO the other USSR) end in a cease fire or would it continue to escalate? My geo-political knowledge of 80s Europe is not as good as it should be so I would appreciate other anons input on the idea.

Cold War Gone Hot is a bit of a specialty of /hwg/, anon. And we don't talk about /his/ here.

Personally I think the events Hackett describes in Third World War, and used in Team Yankee, are way too optimistic in some areas, and too cautious in others. The Soviets would have succumbed to friction within a month, two at the most, and the relentless Red hordes would never have gotten far. On the other hand things get handwaved a lot in this timeline, and Hackett conveniently overlooks other variables (although he included a few in later editions). He was a WW2 general, writing from a NATO perspective, and his view of how WW3 would unfold was totally shaped by that. I wouldn't call it wishful thinking, but he definitely had a certain confirmation basis. I never felt the tit-for-tat nuclear compromise was very plausible either, it was a convenient way to tie everything up. Call me pessimistic, but I think the minute one side got a clear upper hand, the other would have taken the nuclear option.

As WW3 timelines go I always preferred GDW's Twilight 2000 one, where everything turns to shit through bad luck and people being dicks. It's like a slow train crash taking place over four years, with everything going wrong for everyone until the first US soldier finally sets foot on Russian soil, and the nukes fly.

Dang, where is ASLAnon? This is his thing.
>>
>>43499584
One thing that always annoyed me, is that those darn ruskies are portrayed as the side to go nuke-happy first.

The Soviets were fundamentally paranoid that NATO would launch a first strike, and their nuclear doctrine was built on the assumption that NATO would shoot first.

Meanwhile NATO doctrine in Europe did call for the use of tactical nuclear weapons should the conventional battle be lost on the plains of Germany.

There are of course some situations where the USSR would employ nuclear weapons, but in most scenarios by the time that might have occured NATO already would have used tactical nukes.

Once that happens though, it would take a lot of restraint to prevent a strategic nuclear exchange.

As an aside I did enjoy the USSR campaign in Wargame:Red Dragon as it made clear that the seemingly unprovoked invasion on Japan was the product of Soviet paranoia of an impending US/Japan attack.

The Soviets were really, really paranoid that the world was out to get them.

Will give it a try:

The key is to bring everything together, focusing the detailing. Simple thing I'd do for this one is to recolour the bases. Get the green and browns more matching of the table itself or at least each other and it'll immediately look more integrated.

As for layout, make sure the fences and hedges directly or almost directly boarder the fields and perhaps push the fields together more as everything there is a little too spaced out. Base the intact houses like the ruined one and they'll look a lot better too. But I'd already rate it higher than the turquoise woods board of >>43489463 because there's incidental terrain; all those little bits that do more than just cover an area, like the hedge and barbed wire.

>>43497968
This is pretty good for something being brought together from disparate elements, but then, that's club terrain for you, what with it almost inevitably being acquired over years as people make/buy bits of things or maybe do a bulk order and throw out the broken stuff, but the things that don't break (bases usually) remain.

Basically, the layout is solid, the only thing letting it down is maybe a lack of single larger hills to take the place of many small ones (but that's usually a storage and transport issue and by eck I am familiar with those) and that a lot of it doesn't really match in terms of bases/edges. if things are gonna be tarted up for events, then much like the other board, the trick is to bring it all together visually as much as possible. The light forest bases could probably do with being darker, just repainting the edges to match something like the road edges, and then adding a new layer of flock on top, mud and leaf litter would be easy and give a very clear indication of it being woodland. Base the trees to match and you're gold.

The one patch of field out not connected to anything looks a little odd. Some simple muddy trackways to join up that kinda thing would be perfect, and easy.
>>
>>43499464
The Soviets were slow to warm up to the idea of a conventional war with NATO even being a possibility, their doctrine called for mass use of nuclear weapons from the outset, and they trained a surprisingly large amount for fighting in NBC battlefield conditions.

It's a theoretical possibility that by the mid-late '80s a purely conventional war could be fought, but even that is likely to lead to use of chemical weapons. But about that time a lot a of lip-service was being paid to the idea of no first use of nuclear weapons. Not a lot of that was actually making it into the manuals though, so it's really up-in-the-air. But the increased presence of cluster and guided munitions actually massively drops the need for nukes to be used at low levels, because they fill the required roles in a 'safer', better manner.

>>43499959
The soviets had a lot of good reasons for that paranoia. And the nuke-happy thing, well, iirc for at least most of the cold war NATO's general policy was not one of escalation following tactical exchanges but to go full on with M.A.D. (whether that policy would stand up in the face of reality is still very debatable and highly focused on the circumstances). But it was found following the collapse of the USSR that the Soviets made no distinction between tactical and strategic nuclear weapons and expected to use all of them should it be required.
>>
>>43499959
thats not really true

several of the Soviet battle plans required the use of battlefield tactical level nukes to blow through and dislodge NATO defenses. Ive seen battle plans that called for the use of 20 on the first day alone to blow holes in NATO defenses. 2 in the Fulda Gap area alone.

Strategic nukes however were another matter. The Soviets were pretty damn convinced that if they kept it small initially with tacticals that NATO (mostly America) would more than likely respond with Strategics. German (both East and West) of course was aghast at the prospect of nukes being used at all...it was their homeland being nuked after all

there were also concerns that if even tacticals were used- East Germany would lock their shit down. Even going so far as surrendering to NATO to preserve themselves from nukes. And if that were to happen a very good chance Poland would fallow as well...and its kinda tough for the Soviets to conduct a war in West Germany if they dont have the cooperation of East Germany and Poland.

it came real close alot of times in the 80s to going to a shooting war. and as much as people may hate to hear it, having Reagan in office was about the only thing keeping the Soviets from launching an attack. They were scared of him. He was a strong leader in that regard.

>>43501658
>but even that is likely to lead to use of chemical weapon

the use of chemicals were a certinity to be used by WP forces. Part of the standard doctrine for an attack into West Germany, Hell we had that drilled into us enough when I was in the service. Plenty of NBC drills and wearing MOPP suits. We KNEW we were gonna get hit by chemicals if the ballon went up.

but in regards to General Hacketts book-as dry and boring in places as it could be. Still an enjoyable book. He got the entire nuke thing wrong. The Soviets would have never used a single nuke as a 'warning' against NATO and if they did they would have caught a full retaliatory strike back in return.

>>43502934
Yeah, that sort of thing really is interesting. I think the only thing more sobering and worrying than the blithe, sanguine assumptions the Soviet planners made, was some of the ones that NATO planners did.

If either or both had gotten their way most of the civilized world would have shuffled off the mortal coil together, with the general situation for the living as "Shit is Burning, Things are Fucked". That, or "Shit has Burned, Things are Fucked, wake up and smell the ashes".

It's sort of alarming to realize how much both just sort of assumed things would go according to the unbeatable plan they had for dealing with those stupid bastards. And they wouldn't have because the other side had a plan and wasn't totally stupid, and it would have ruined everything for some time.

Well, the basic tenant of soviet war plans is that following their WW2 experience of losing millions of people, the best defence is best fought on someone else's turf, with a strong focus on offence.

There's also the way the soviets fought, and intended to fight mirrored their WW2 experiences directly. that is, their favoured place is in the enemy's rear (insert joke about russian recruits and sodomy here). That they might have a vast army was a thing but a lot of it isn't going to be facing west, and so they needed to maximise their breakthroughs whilst expecting incredible losses.

Image on the bottom particularly related. It's a very general but gives a good impression of the style of battle; that's about 15 tactical nuclear strikes within a couple of square miles as a prelude for a breakthrough attack.

The only thing close I've seen so far is Sharpe Practice, but I was hoping to find something with list-building and points costs or something of the like if there was something available.

And on an unrelated note, has anyone here played Beneath the Lily Banners?

with over 170 28mm figures you may be a little beyond 'large skirmish'

I'm sorry, I should have clarified, I was going to be using the skirmish rules for casual games with friends while I got the miniatures together and painted.

What are the Firepower rules like? I haven't been able to find a review explaining what they're like, I keep getting re-directed to an old hex and counter game about sci-fi stuff.

Dayyyyum those are fine.

We had an NZ wars game the other day. resolved some balance issues. Asymmetrical warfare is never easy to balance, but I made militia slightly more shitty, and British regulars WAY more expensive (to represent limited numbers), which should help the Maori do a bit better in future games.

Both my NZ wars and WW1 Dogfight! games are coming along nicely. 2 mostly finished rule sets in about 6 months.

Well if I ever get good or at least not bad...

Ships would be a problem, I think. 3D printing does not love all the thin strut-wire-whatever stuff is needed. Might be able to pass with some WWI planes, but not much more.

I regret taking BTR-60 as my fi...second? project. Nobody needs them at 15mm (or Team Yankee doesn't, at least) and it's retarded complex in comparison to tracked doorstops like BMP-1&2 or BTR-50
>>
>>43518197
>Ships would be a problem, I think. 3D printing does not love all the thin strut-wire-whatever stuff is needed.

Depends heavily on the type of ship, the era and the scale you're sculpting in. Post-Dreadnought stuff generally has structural components thick enough to print properly, although some things might need a little exaggeration.
There's actually a decent market for 1/1800 scale WW2 ships on Shapeways, for instance.
>>
>>43518197
You could print it in two parts, hull and mast. String can be used for ropes and whatever can be added by the guy making it.
>>
>>43518247
I'll take it into consideration. Anything in our catalogues good for reference material? After I got a somewhat questionable BTR blueprint, I'm kind of anxious about it.

one of the most notable things I've seen for wargaming pieces of that ilk on shapeways was 1:300 Czechoslovakian gear. Notable because despite being under the thumb of the USSR, they maintained their own manufacturing industry, which lead to their own/shared designs with East Germany and Poland for a lot of utility equipment. Trucks, recon vehicles, wheeled transports...

In short I think you need more of a niche. Find something not well covered, things people don't need a lot of but would be nice to have a few of, and make those. Command, recon, supply and the like. If you're doing a BTR, make it one with some visible external modifications, maybe one of those un-adopted prototypes with fancy turrets.

>>43521668
You might also be able to get away with making conversion kits.

I mean, I don't like the cost of printing full models, but parts to spice up variants could be pretty handy.
>>
>>43521922
Yeah, but wouldn't conversion kits be extremely specific to manufacturers? I mean, printing better Chimera turrets is one thing, making artillery spotter conversions for BTRs is totally another.
>>
>>43522011
probably not that specific because they're all working from the same historical vehicles. I think a lot of it would be down to resizing since the vehicles are down to the same shapes. Plus you could just pick a few of the popular ones, like Battlefront (plastic kits and marketing will help them) and Pendraken (who pretty much has a monopoly on 10mm for cold war).
Engineering vehicles like bridge layers would be an obvious target for kits. Worth looking into at least.

>>43523674
Yes. That terrain when you look at what it's composed of (mostly just different coloured flock and some clump foliage and I think lichen by the river banks) and the layout (though clearly based on somewhere real) works to produce a really good looking table. I'd be happy pushing microarmour over that, let alone infantry regiments, because there's a load of terrain to mix up lines of sight.
That and the river is river coloured, not child's drawing of a river coloured aka bright blue. The chalky exposed cliff sides provide a nice contrast (again though I bet that's an IRL detail) and will play a big part in defining the flow of battle.
The multiple levels of hills also works really well to make a battlefield more interesting.

Patchwork fields like that do look nicer than straight up grass plains for small figures+large ground scale games. Sure, they're not appropriate everywhere, but very easy to make if they are appropriate.

Hitler’s Russian & Cossack Allies 1941–1945 (Osprey Men-at-Arms 503)

Given the merciless way in which the war on the Eastern Front of World War II was conducted, it is difficult to envisage anyone changing sides during the conflict. Yet after the German invasion of Russia in Operation Barbarossa, well over 400,000 former Soviet citizens went on to fight for Nazi Germany. These included not only the ‘legions' recruited from non-Russian ethnic groups eager for freedom from Stalin's dictatorship, but also some 100,000 Russians and Cossacks. What began as small local security units of ‘Ostruppen', enrolled for the ongoing campaigns against Soviet partisans, were later reorganized, given special systems of uniform and insignia, amalgamated into larger formations, and eventually committed to the front line. This book offers up an essential guide to the appearance, formation and equipment of the myriad Russian and Soviet units that fought for the Germans. It uses rare photographs and revealing colour illustrations to create a peerless visual reference to the troops who switched from one ruthless superpower to another and met with a horrific fate when the fighting was over.

From about 1916 on, certainly. Field phones were a bit dodgy prior to that, they usually preferred pigeons anyway. Balloons were a major menace; they were singled out for attack right away. "Balloon-busters" became a particular kind of ace.

Hey guys, I'm from another thread. How would you deal with classical/ancient skirmish warfare? Because I've always considered most of the 'unit types' of antiquity to be really effective in formation, and not so much out in the open. For example, a decent enough celtic swordsman (not even talking about solduroi or nobles) could take on a pretty large number of roman legionaries if they were disorganized and came at him one by one.

It was the discipline and the ability to withstand the blows and charges of their opponents that made them actually reliable, not their individual combat prowess.

Their biggest merit was NOT running and being actually disciplined enough to stay in formation in spite of casualties and everything.

So, how would you deal with that in an Ancients skirmish game?
>>
>>43545104
For vidya, Rule the Waves is good for the Russo-Japanese through WWI period.

If you want something fast, flavourful but sadly out of production, Axis and Allies Naval Miniatures (War at Sea) is an excellent beer-and-pretzels game.

>>
>>43545160
It's kinda hard to answer this because the how is a very basic part of basically any historical skirmish game of any era.

Humans vs humans tends in game mechanics to be reduced to the essentials of quality, morale and equipment, with equipment usually in last place in how much affects things unless it provides a significant alteration to the proceedings, particularly in the area of survivability.

So they do it by their very nature of how skirmish games work. Which is hard to sum up because any good game has a serious amount of design that goes into it, especially if having to draw from multiple examples. As not every game does it the same because the authors wanted to focus the system on different aspects of combat, or attempt more or less of a degree of simulation. There might be systems for controlling only limited amounts of troops at a time, or letting everyone act. There might be mechanics for giving particular advantages to different types of troops through special traits, or it could all be on just the numbers.
>>
>>43546913
Thanks mate, much appreciated!
>>
>>43547100
I'm trying to stick to more organised forces atm to sate my love of early cold war and ww2 equipment.

There will evenetually be more ad hoc/militia type forces. It makes it a little easier to balance games as well if force get similar style armies, which while not really accurate for some African conflicts makes for easier/better games.
>>
>>43520832
Where are these from?
>>
>>43546384
But it's actually pretty different.

Compare dark ages warfare (lots of low-scale raids, equipment that could be used effectively in formation and out of formation) with ancient warfare.

Maybe it's just a prejudice I have, but ancients always seemed more oriented towards huge battles and no skirmishes. Unless it's mythical.

>>43547109
I belive there could be a way of having different stats. In a fantasy game, the difference between attribute say 4 and 5 is a lot. For example, Warhammer has the humans have Strength 3, a Saurus Warrior with S4 and a Chaos champion with S5. The differences among them are pretty big.

But what if the difference from S2 to S5 was much smaller in the scale of the game? Maybe it doesn't make much sense

>>
>>43546723
For the opfor in that kind of setting I figure that you'll need mostly the following:

Infantry, Infantry, Infantry and possibly even some more Infantry.
Armour support should be practically non-existent but a solid core of genuinely good, experienced veteran troops supplemented by weaker but well motivated troops rather than the typical African style of a large mass of almost entirely shit troops with vehicle support.

Give them artillery though, both mortars and howitzers. HMGs too. The general approach should be one of sneaky infiltration to get close to their enemy, with the support elements doing their thing to pin units in place before the infantry assault them.

Get some recoilless rifles as well. But use them defensively, in ambush positions preferably since you won't have vehicles to lug them around.

>>
>>43547681
The basic idea i was going for a 'soviet' or communist backed force would be a company of infanty so 3 platoons with RR and Mortars plus a t55 or two. This would be supplanted by militia/insurgent forces which could have greater deployment options.

it's the classic I was just wondering if people had other ideas.
>>
>>43547456
Strength is a very cartoony way of differentiating peoples for a historical game. It does happen, but is uncommon because really even on the level of a 1 figure = 1 man skirmish between groups of less than 30, the differences are effectively negligible for anything attempting to be more of a simulation.

Warhammer's strength scale I still argue was busted the moment that modifiers to armour saves were tied to them (after 3rd edition). That put far too much of a bonus on Str 4 troops, which then started making armour options worse since light armour suddenly became worthless, and even 5+ saves tended to be pointless against armies that featured Str 4 units in relative abundance. Which had a knock-on effects and contributed to how combat became more stacked in favour of single-round victories to wipe out units, and then the steps that were taken to counter that and the problems they brought with them (handweapon and shield bonus of 6th edition helped even more to make troops with spears/halberds and not above-average stats/some sort of ability pointless). /rant
