[Previous Thread: >>43427147]

An old man stands just inside a door recessed into the hillside. He gazes out at the lands beyond with a curiously vacant look; there's nothing intelligent behind those eyes, not any more. That mind has moved on to rather more impressive accommodations.

With a distant thrum of power, a massive obelisk comes to life; the arcane runes covering it glimmering with magical energy. If the first step in the Keeper's conquest of this continent was the planting of his Heart beneath these hills; the activation of that obelisk was the second.

Now, to take a third. Something resembling awareness returns to the old man's eyes, and he strides forward, out of the dungeon. Time to make some allies...

For those just getting in:

This is a Dungeon Keeper style Civ Quest. You are the disembodied consciousness of a relatively new Keeper, on a quest to conquer as much of this unexplored continent as you can manage. Your traits are as follows.

You are Colourless. With no natural connection to any of the five Colours of Magic, your ability to use spells is practically nonexistent. However, you compensate for this with a greater attunement to artifacts, including your Dungeon Heart; possibly the most powerful artifact known.
You are a Master Alchemist. You can convert Mana to Gold with perfect efficiency... and since you don't have much use for Mana anyways, you generally store all your Mana as Gold. You can also convert Gold into other useful resources; it's not terribly efficient, but you can transmute Gold into anything you need.
You are a Geomancer. You can tap the natural Mana of Lands by building Obelisks at key positions; this gives you a reliable income, and increases your territorial control.
You have Minions. You can create golems which are decent fighters, but exceptional workers; they are able to handle many construction and mining tasks in a fraction of the time conventional workers might.
You are a Sorcerer. Your magical abilities are self-taught, and you have little use for the tomes of conventional magicians. You don't benefit much from studying books; any progress you make in your abilities will be by testing out new ideas in the lab.
You have Ascended. Your soul is bound to your Dungeon Heart, not your body; you have a god's-eye view of your entire territory, and you can use your magical abilities anywhere within your controlled range. As an artificer, this has less to do with spells and more to do with device control; you can be a fearsome trapmaster, or puppet your golems as you would your old body.

It is early summer.

You have 176 gold, and 27 Golems. Your Obelisk and Heart together produce 150 gold per month, while your golems each consume 1 gole per month in upkeep. You are currently in the habit of spending 10 gold per month on bribes to the local Ogre tribes, who may make valuable allies... or deadly enemies.

You are currently considering the development of a new golem type, one better suited to the construction of large monuments. You'll need to set up some proper lab space to get seriously started on that, though.

> Set up a lab to get started on golem development. (50 Gold)
> Have your golems rebuild the quarry you tore apart earlier, so you can get started on your next obelisk. (50 Gold)
> Send the old man body out with an honour guard and some gifts for the ogres; try and establish some kind of diplomatic relations (you'll have to start by learning their language).
> Scout out the area around your new borders, setting up territory markers in a wider circle (25 gold)
> Something else?

>>43447123
Given the durable materials they are made of, your golems are somewhat better fighters than your average human soldiers, but they are very much the SCV of your potential future arsenal. The local Ogres would trash your forces pretty quickly if it came down to a serious fight.

>>43447227

Wood and steel. Your golems are of similar construction to warforged, but are not independently intelligent.

Can we dress up some territory markers to make them look like gifts and hand them out when we meet the Ogres? That would give us a direct look at their camps and habits.

You don't have the golempower to do all that at once. You can, at most, do two of those. To help address this problem, you might:

We need more Pyl...i mean more obelisks.
>>

>>

I think adressing the ogres as soon as possible would be better. Make then become our minions then we would have golens and ogres working for us. We can build the quarry and make some diplomatic with the ogres.

The quarry was ransacked pretty heavily, but between gathering up some more local brush, and reclaiming the scaffolding you used to erect your obelisk, you have everything you need in place. At this rate, it'll take the concerted efforts of the bulk of your golems 2 months of work to dig up an appropriate stone block, and another 2 months (and 200 gold) to make it into an obelisk. Then, of course, you have the problem of transporting it to wherever it is you want it...

> Start work on the next obelisk.

>>43447573
>>43447488
>>43447389
The old man, plus his honour guard, go out to meet some Ogres in person. Thus far, they've come to you, so it's a little different than the usual protocol... but they're happy with the weapons you've been supplying to them, so they're willing to put up with you as you hang around their village. For now, at any rate. You're not exactly a linguist, but how hard could it be to figure out some kind of basic trade pidgin?

Yep. The others will be more problematic, though; transporting a 300 ton stone block across 100 kilometres of rolling hills is non-trivial. There's a reason why you might want a new golem design.

The Ogres are tribal nomads, living in felt tents. Their 'villages' move irregularly, by the seasons, or by whim. They are hunters and herders, keeping sheep and goats. This entire river valley system is their pasture.

Although this land does contain some rather dangerous predators, including the fearsome displacer beast, the Ogres are clearly at the top of the food chain; there's nothing in these lands that can really threaten a people as large, strong, and numerous as they. Yet.

You set up a crude forge in their village, and work where they can watch. Their guttural tongue is strange, but you make some progress at learning it; you make a point of trying to ask what kind of things they want, and they make a point of trying to tell you.

Meanwhile, you build four new golems in your Dungeon. You now have 31 golems, and 208 gold. It is early autumn.

(previous options still apply, but feel free to suggest something else!)
>>
>>43448604
Use our dungeon forge to create armors and crossbows for some of our golens. If possible make it something so heavy or in such a mechanical way that only a machine or a golem can lift/use it.

So far as armour goes, your golems are built armoured; adding extra would be difficult and of dubious merit. If you want tougher ones, you pretty much need to design a heavier model... which is totally worth doing, eventually, but is a different prospect from armouring up your existing models.

So far as ranged weaponry goes... also tricky. Your golems just aren't all that intelligent; the design you're using is about clever enough to hit things with sharp things. You'd probably be better off with a specialized ranged combat model.

>>43448705
A key part of the defensive design of your Dungeon was that the corridors are too small for Ogres. It'd take a lot of renovation to rectify that, and it would weaken your defences considerably, not to mention leaving your Heart exposed to the only serious threat in the area. Are you sure you want to do that?
>>
>>43448604
start building the obelisk
>>
>>43448791
I was thinking more like weaponize then.

>>43448791
No no, let's keep our defenses as it is. LEt's make some warhammers, swords and mauls for our golens, while working on the obelisk. How many weapons can we make to weaponize at least 20 of our golens?
>>
>>43448876
See >>43447338

Your golems are armed; they fight with sword and shield; this accounts for 10 gold of their production cost. It'd be somewhat more efficient to make unarmed models, but it's handy having them all able to fight, just in case.
>>
>>43448932
Oh okay didn't know that was included in the making. Pretty cool. So let's work on a new place for our new obelisk. Let's go up the mountains, lets gather those red mana.
>>
>>43449029
The easiest place to get your obelisk on would be the hills to the west, but it'd be worthwhile to set up your territory markers in the mountains on general principle; it does expand your vision range.

You're not quite to the point of conveying complex requests like that, but you're getting there. That said, your overall impression of these Ogres is that they're pretty isolated; they don't really have anyone to fight but each other.

It is now mid-autumn. You have 242 gold. The Ogres you were staying with are starting to head north; you can't meaningfully follow them, given the limited range of your territory.

You are now able to maintain a single line of research as one of your options (at a price of 50 gold / month in supplies). You could try to make just about any artifact, but you're currently most familiar with golem design. What would you like to try first?

It's a fertile river valley, covering a pretty sizable chunk of terrain. There are hills, and a river leading down to the lakeside. The river isn't particularly navigable this high up, unfortunately; there's a notable waterfall where it pours down into the lake. A portion of the hills near the obelisk is dug up a bit; there's some decent stone under the surface, there.

Were you asking for anything more specific?

You know of the existence of some metals like that, yeah. You're not formally trained, so you couldn't exactly recite a list of all the useful metals and alloys that exist, but if you're willing to pay for it, you could alchemy up some Mithril or something. It's just really expensive, and the extra benefit is probably not worth the cost, generally speaking.

Maybe we could create a new miner variant that's particularly good at extracting obelisks. If we can speed up production we'll get a serious gold income that much faster.
>>

We could just build miner golens. I think if we specified to much we will have then usefull only for that. So with miner golens they could not only mine the obelisk but also mine other minerals.
>>
>>43449957
There's three phases to obelisks; excavation, detailing, and transport.

Excavation is one of the functions of your existing golems, but there's considerable room for improvement; specialty mining golems would help here, and with other mining projects.

Detailing is something your existing golems are decent enough at. Specialized crafting golems would help here, and be useful in other fiddly projects.

Transport is currently where your existing golems fall down. It's a seriously tough job. A specialist design would be super-helpful.

Research on the earlier hauling golem idea begins in earnest. This'll be something big and treaded, with arms like small cranes; a specialist piece of heavy machinery, dedicated to the task of spreading your influence across the land.

Meanwhile, excavation begins, and none too soon; it's a lot more convenient to get that process done before snow begins to fall.

Haulers roll out! Let's get them well-tested in time to haul our new obelisk

You finish the obelisk. The hauler model proves... somewhat clumsy (no serious disasters, and you tighten up the relevant controls).

You'll need two in order to move the thing at all (with help); four in order to do so independently, and in a reasonable timeframe. You'd want six, and a custom-built hauling frame, in order to do serious overland hauling (ie: more than one hex). Haulers cost 2 gold/month in upkeep.

It is now late winter. You have 178 gold.

Income: 150
Upkeep: 93

Your research project is effectively complete, and you may assign a new one as you see fit... or leave your lab idle to save on upkeep.

We will need to build up money to bribe and build new golem haulers.

We doing north east mountain, right?
>>

(not to stress the obvious, but it'll be a hell of a lot more difficult to haul an obelisk up the side of a mountain than to move it anywhere else.)

That's why I was asking. I assume we would need the 6 to try it.
>>
>>43452570
It'd help, yeah. The easiest place to move an obelisk to at the moment would be the hills to the west. Getting an obelisk across a river is easy compared to getting one up a mountain.
>>
>>43452640
Lets do that then. I think consensus is no research, another hauler.
>>
>>43452640
Yeah why not build it to the west.
>>
>>43452737
I would be down for it if we did. Best if we scout it with markers first to reduce attack risk while building though.

You clear a path between the river forks, leaving a reasonably clear route for the obelisk to travel along.

It is early spring.

You build a third hauler, and mark off the area you're about to claim.

In the meantime, you poke around the mountains for useful resources. The mountains you claimed earlier seem to be rich in tin. Not super-useful to you (why make bronze when you can make steel?), but you could always transmute the metal to gold, after smelting. Something to consider once you improve your operations.

It is mid-spring. You have 161 gold. The Ogres are returning.

If theres metal out there then we should really strongly consider working on that quarrybot, it could probably really help with mining tin too, and that could quickly pay for itself. My vote is for +1 hauler, quarrybot research, and moutain road like

Building into the mountains is difficult. At this rate, your golems will be occupied for another month or two.

You finish your fourth hauler. Four hauler golems can move the obelisk into position in two months, without needing any other support.

You start up the lab again, sketching out plans for a better mining golem. You have nothing concrete to deploy just yet.

It is late spring. You have 112 gold.

> Start moving the obelisk.
> Keep building the road
or
> Reassign your golems somewhere?

As the Ogres come to collect the usual bribes, they inform you (in broken, confused terms) that they've been fighting some short people to the north. They are eager to acquire better arms and equipment from you... and are willing to pay for your craftsmanship.

***Major Decision***
It seems civilization is catching up to you. If you continue your attempts to ingratiate yourself with the Ogres, you will gain a new trait!
-Savage: You are seen by the civilized peoples as little better than the monsters you associate yourself with, an evil and threatening presence to be eliminated. This will greatly complicate any future attempts at trade or diplomacy! On the other hand, you will have an easier time negotiating with the primitives, and may be able to recruit them to your side.
(As a negative trait, this will give you a trait point, which you may be able to spend in the future...)

Refusing to aid the Ogres will upset them, but may open another alternative, once you reestablish contact with civilization.

Bear in mind that you don't have the money for a full production run, unless you pause your labwork. Building 3 golems would cost 105 gold (nearly all you have).
>>
>>43453949
I 100% believe mining golems are the least of our worries.
>>
>>43453843
I'm one for sticking with those I started my dealings with. I vote for Joining with the "Savage" people of this land.

Aid the ogres, but only in secret. Tell them not to inform anyone of who they got their weapons from.
>>
>>43454158
>>43454044
>>43453899

You agree to provide the Ogres with whatever they need. Trade flourishes.

Trait gained: Savage! Now, you're better able to communicate with the Ogres, and will begin to trade with them! The Ogres will provide you with access to:
Wood (-5 gold to golem cost; -10 gold for haulers)
Ivory (valuable; possible wand material)
Displacer Hide (the tanned skin of Displacer Beasts; you can probably devise a neat magical thing to do with these...)
Instead of paying 10 gold per month in bribes, you now gain 50 per month in profits, though this eats up your forge's capacity, so you'll want to expand your operations.
Beware, your enemies are coming for you.

It is early summer. You have 31 worker golems, and 4 hauler golems. You have 223 gold.

Income: 200 gold
Expenses: 89 gold

Focus on arming the Ogres as best we can, we want them to be a solid enough buffer that the civilized people never get to see our obelisks and golems.

Begin working on a warrior model for the golems. Try using the hides to cover the bodies and give them a double.
