sure, I kind of like them more than pure blueprints anyway. because those are usually pages thick(as in one or two parts per page MAXIMUM) and an exploded view shows how it actually goes together with a little tiny bit of how it could work...
however, much like the Clip Vs Magazine debate, the term 'blueprints' has come to mean(to most people anyway) any design document.
Everyone's favorite.

Gramarie is a homebrew magic system for D&D specifically designed for the creation of such machinery. (Except the peasant railgun, which simply doesn't work.)
