Your parents have really cut it close with the moving day.

It's the beginning of September, and you're set to start your first day of High School tomorrow. That alone could be stressful, but you'll be attending high school in a new town where you know nobody. To make matters worse, you're on your way to your new home today, which doesn't exactly give you a whole lot of time to acclimate yourself to the new place before you're thrust into nine months of tedium.

You've been cooped up in a car with your parents and little sister for nearly three hours. Madelyn, who is only five, has made the trip far longer than necessary with her constant insistence that your parents stop to let her pee. You kind of wish they'd just tell her to do it in a bottle at this point, even though you aren't sure how well that would work.

"Alright, we're almost there," your dad announces for the third time in the last hour.

"I just got off the phone with the moving company," your mother tells him, sliding her cellphone into her purse. "They're bringing our things into the house now, all we'll have to do is unload the car and unpack."

You remain quiet for the rest of the ride, but happily help your parents unpack when you arrive.

You keep an eye on your sister, who tries her best to help out but really just gets in everyone's way. She has a big smile on her face whenever your parents let her carry something small upstairs, so she seems pretty entertained.

With everyone working together, most of the unpacking is done in about an hour, all that remains is a few things your parents are going to handle.

"Thanks for being so helpful," your dad says as your mom goes upstairs to find your sister.

He reaches into his pocket, producing a twenty dollar bill. "Why don't you go somewhere and grab a bite to eat? And take Madelyn with you."

Your sister soon comes running down the stairs, rushing over to you and bouncing excitedly on her feet.

"Where are we going?" she asks cheerfully.

"Let's see if there's any good places to get burgers around here," you suggest.

Madelyn jumps with joy, grinning ear to ear. "Yay! Burgers!"

"Be careful out there," your mom cautions. "And keep an eye on Madelyn."

The two of you leave the house and walk down the street. You pass a couple of people walking their dog, and introduce yourself while Madelyn plays with it. You soon say goodbye and keep walking, though Madelyn throws a few glances back at the dog, clearly wanting to go play with it some more.

It takes a bit of looking around, but you soon find a small shopping center that seems to have a burger joint. You and Madelyn walk across the parking lot and head inside.

It's only a short line, but you take some time to look at the menu. There are a variety of burgers, some of them looking delicious, and others looking like a guaranteed heart attack. Madelyn quickly tells you that she wants a burger and some fries, as usual. But, you take some time to think it over.

Your time comes, and a guy about your age with long, messy hair greets you from behind the register.

"Welcome to John's Burgers, may I take your order?" he asks.

The guy stares at you for a moment. "Uh...let me see what we've got..."

He steps away from the register and disappears somewhere into the back. About two minutes later, he comes back.

"Okay, man, is there anything else?" he asks.

You order Madelyn's burger and fries, then go grab a table with her. She swings her feet back and forth, humming to herself and smiling at you.

"Big brother, what's school like?" she asks.

You forgot, she's starting Kindergarten tomorrow. She's never been to daycare, so school is sure to be an adjustment for her.

"School's great!" you assure her, not really sure how much you believe that, but wanting to be upbeat for your sister's sake.

She looks thrilled to hear that, and you hope she maintains that positive attitude throughout the school year.

Your burgers are soon ready, and you dig in, finding your egg burger to be one of the most delicious things you've ever tasted. Madelyn scarfs down her fries and takes giant bites of her burger, letting you know that she holds a similar opinion about her own meal.

The two of you make short work of the food, and leave the restaurant together.

You decide to ask your sister if she wants to go for a walk. She says yes, and the two of you begin exploring the new town.

"Alright, but only for a little bit," you tell her. "Then we go home."

She nods then rushes to the doors, pulling them open and rushing inside the store. You follow, and find Madelyn at the puppy cages, pressing her face against the glass as a dozen tiny dogs bark and wag their tails at her.

You approach the glass, standing at your sister's side as she teases the puppies, holding her hands to the glass and watching the little dogs try to lick her. She begins tapping the class, and that's when someone speaks behind you.

"Excuse me, can you please not tap the glass?" a female voice requests.

You turn around to find a girl, perhaps a year younger than you, with long black hair and glasses, looking at your sister.

Madelyn turns towards the girl, looking down at her feet. "Sorry, I just wanted to play with the puppies."

"Well, we do have a playpen if you'd like to meet one of them," the girl tells your sister with a smile.

"Of course," you tell your sister before looking at the girl. "Can we see the German Shepherd puppy?"

The girl nods. "Sure. Go ahead into one of the playpens, and I'll bring her right in."

Madelyn leads the way into one of the playpens, bouncing around excitedly as the girl brings the puppy over to you.

She sets it down gently in the pen, and it begins excitedly running around, jumping up at Madelyn, biting at your shoelaces, and overall seeming like a happy ball of fun.

You and Madelyn play with the puppy while the dark-haired girl keeps an eye on the two of you from nearby. Everything is fine, but you notice some sort of bug keeps hovering close to the puppy. Whenever the bug gets close, the puppy lets out an adorable little grow and snaps at it, but the bug keeps coming back.

You keep a close eye on the bug, and wait for it to move a far enough distance from the puppy before you reach out and crush it between your hands.

The puppy looks at you, tilting its head to the side in confusion before returning to its playful attitude and running around Madelyn.

You look down at your hand, which is now covered in blue bug guts, which strikes you as odd. Wiping it on your pant leg, you return to playing with the puppy for a while before ultimately letting the girl know that you and Madelyn are done.

The girl comes over and picks up the puppy, returning it to its cage as a sad Madelyn looks on.

"I'm Siegfried," you introduce. "Can I get this place's number just in case?"

"Sure, gimme a second and I'll write it down for you," Erin says, walking to a counter and scribbling the number down on a piece of paper. "Here you are."

You place the paper in your pocket, and prepare to leave when you see a boy about your age with short black hair run into the store, looking around frantically for something. "No," you answer.

The boy lets out a relieved sigh. "Great. Well, later!"

He turns around and rushes out of the store, turning right and vanishing from your view. Madelyn, whose attention has been taken by the puppies once again, doesn't notice, though you see Erin relax a bit once the boy's gone.

"That was weird," she says, summing up the whole encounter pretty well.

"Do you know that guy?" you ask.

"Never seen him before in my life," she answers. "Maybe he just moved here too."

You say goodbye, dragging Madelyn away from the puppies and walking home with her. It's getting dark, so you walk quickly, entering your house to find your parents waiting.

"What took you so long?" your mother asks in irritation. "Was it really that long of a walk to get something to eat?"

"Siegfried took me to see puppies!" Madelyn explains in an excited tone.

Your mom smiles. "He did? Did you have fun?"

Madelyn nods happily, and your mom gives you a smile.

"I'm glad," your mom tells your sister. "Now go ahead upstairs, it's time for your bath."

"Okay," Madelyn says before running up the stairs.

Your mom looks over at you, still smiling. "Thanks for being so good to your little sister."

She heads for the stairs, and your father walks over to you.

He places a hand on your shoulder. "I know this is a big change for you, and I know you'll probably miss your friends from our old home, but I'm proud of how you're handling this so far."

He gives you a smile and steps back. "So, with that in mind, I have a little present for you. We aren't in the city anymore, and I'm sure you're going to want to go off and do your own thing a lot of nights, so I got you this."

He pulls a cellphone from his pocket, handing it to you.

His expression turns more serious. "And Siegfried, I need you to do me a favor and not tell any more stories about ghosts around your sister. Don't tell her you've seen a ghost in the bathroom, or the basement, or anything, alright? She'll have nightmares."

"Alright, but I really did see ghosts at the old house," you tell your dad.

"I told you, there's no such thing as ghosts," your father replies.

You've had this discussion before. The first time you saw a ghost; a tall man in black with dreadlocks, your father had looked rather pale when you told him. Both he and your mother assured you that ghosts aren't real, and it was just your imagination.

Still, you'd continued to see ghosts, even two that looked a lot like your grandparents. Your dad had gotten sad when you told him about them, and once again told you that there was no such thing as ghosts.

This has to be like, the fiftieth time you've had this conversation.

"Just, make sure you don't go scaring your sister with this," he reiterates.

You decide to play some video games, and spend the next hour or so playing some of your favorites before climbing into bed and pulling up the covers.

"So, who's excited for school?" your mom asks, taking a seat.

"I am!" Madelyn answers eagerly with a mouth full of pancake.

You decide that a ride with the family is just fine, as you really don't care what anyone else thinks about it.

You all enjoy a pleasant breakfast before climbing into the car and heading across town. Madelyn asks you a lot of questions about school, which you answer to the best of your ability while trying to paint school in a positive light.

Madelyn hands on your every word, and still seems excited as your parents pull into your school's parking lot, wishing for you to have a good day before leaving with your sister.

It's the first day, so you head to homeroom, where a balding man with white hair sits behind a desk, watching as the students all take their seats.

You only see three still open; one in the middle of the room next to the guy from the burger joint, one up front next to Erin, and one in the back next to that strange guy from the pet store.

"I just moved here yesterday," you confirm.

"Well, welcome to the town," Randy says with a smile. "It's a pretty nice place with some great food, I think you'll like it here."

"What are the people at school like?" you ask.

"Well, I only know our grade, the sophomores, and the juniors, but they're mostly good people," he answers. "I mean, you've got your cliques and one or two people with bad attitudes, but nobody around here's all that bad."

"Good morning, students!" your homeroom teacher speaks up. "I am Mr. Grant, and welcome to your first year of High School. For those of you who aren't aware of how things are done here; this school operates under block scheduling. What this means is that classes are twice as long, but you have half as many each semester. Honestly, I think it's a good system, and those of you planning to attend college should benefit from being exposed to it early."

"Gym," you answer. "You?"

You're soon dismissed and sent to your first class. You gather in the gym, where a slightly overweight man wearing a baseball cap addresses the class.

"Alright, ladies and gentlemen, listen up!" he begins. "I want to welcome you all to Andrew Jackson High School! My name is Patrick Charles, but you can call me PC if you like, or Mr. Charles, I'm not picky."

He looks the class over. "Now, it's the first day, so I'll let this slide, but from here on you need to start wearing appropriate gym clothes to this class. We will be doing a lot of running, pushups, and all sorts of other activities to keep you all in shape."

You hear a few students groan.

"Come on, physical health is important," Mr. Charles insists. "Of course, so is mental health. I want you all to understand that this class is a safe-zone. No hurtful language is allowed here. If you have a problem with someone, you can settle it in a game of basketball or dodgeball. Now, is everyone ready to have some fun? Because we're going to start today with some laps around the gym!"

The class groans, and begins running laps.
