Hey /epg/ is back! I have a question for my game: what would a secret research station on the surface of Venus be like?
>>
>>44546300
>what would a secret research station on the surface of Venus be like?

It'd have to be run by Q-morphs or similar on the outside, probably have a giant heat shield of something anti-corrosive over the important bits. Geothermal power maybe?

Best way would be to rig it to have a secure darkcasting rig so most people just beam in, very rarely do they smuggle physical bodies/stacks down with the mining. Then you can have the classic horror scenario "wake up and realize you can't go outside because outside will fucking kill you".
>>
>>44546342

A big ceramic refrigerator in the middle of nowhere.
>>
>>44546408
Can you have darkcasting stations on major habs without being detected? Or do ou need a separate secret routing station?
>>
>>44546610

The books seem to imply most major habs have an underground darkcasting network of some sort, be it something simple like an Anon board, or a complex Nine Lives or ID Crew operation - the problem is that individuals probably don't have the resources to set up a darkcast on their own, so you need a lot of cash and skill or to go through a middle man.

I'm not sure I'd ever trust Nine lives to ego cast for me; they probably make secret forks of everyone to make snuff porn with.

I hope at least some of those stories are by new authors. I can't stand the shitty prose in the books and I've always skipped over the fiction sections
>>
>>44550021

I could see there being a fad trend among the richer sections of society, akin to veganism/paleo etc, of showing social responsibility and integrity by taking the "dud" morphs. You know, the guys who are like "sure, organic fruit and veg costs a little more and isn't as pretty, but it's sooo worth it to eat right".
>>
>>44551089

Well, I'm not sure if they've ever written sections in the books before, but it looks like at least all the new fiction is by people who haven't done the opening fiction before, which is Into the White, Interference, Lack, Nostrums An Infinite Horizon and Melt.

I kind of like An Infinite Horizon for it's concepts, and parts of the two halves of Nostrum and Into The White were okay. Lack and Melt were kind of lackluster, especially since later books make it a point to be like "getting to Earth is hard, yo".

From what I understand, the difference between exhuman and posthuman in EP terms is that exhumans are hostile to transhumanity in general.
>>
>>44557419
Except that's not what is happening during the eclipse phase at all.
>>
>>44557420
Exhumans are a faction within Eclipse Phase that seeks to transcend the transhuman and become post- human. More to the point, exhumans seek to perfect their physical and mental capabilities to extreme levels, in search of some perfectionist ideal or to become something higher-up on the evolutionary ladder. Exactly what this is differs from exhuman to exhuman, but there is generally some adherence to Nietzschean philosophy and a goal to reach the pinnacle of the food chain. Some exhumans have transformed them- selves into what they consider to be an ideal predator or a creature that is extra-adaptable and so best able to survive. Others radically modify their own brains in order to drastically surpass transhuman intelligence. Most are singularity seekers, eager and willing to follow the breadcrumbs left by the TITANs or other entities in the hope that they will nd the means of transcending transhuman limitations.
Due to the use of numerous extreme, experimental, and dangerous self-modi cations, some exhumans have done permanent damage to their psyches, becom- ing insane or perhaps just transferring their mode of thinking into something that is no longer recognizable as human. Some have also adopted an antagonistic view of their former transhuman species, viewing it as weak, decadent, and unworthy. This has spurred some exhumans to actively attack and ravage transhuman settlements and ships, though usually in isolated areas.

>>44557081
Exhumans are a nice dumping ground for "weird hostile shit". I tend to make exhumanism more of a mental or social outlook, so that exhumans can blend into normal society. "Soft" exhumans are people like the mercenaries who edit away their fear and mercy, or intentionally psychopathic businesspeople. Sometimes they go "Hard" and start getting combat monster morphs, or going innabelt or similar. I've had an Exhuman working as an Eraser for an NPC.

Have any of you guys played eclipse phase in face-to-face games? I ask because I've ramped up interest for it among my normal faking group, but one of the big things that bothers me about the rules is how you end up recalculating your skills if you switch morphs or get certain augs, which can get tedious real quick. I know online character sheets solve this problem but not everyone at the table has access to a tablet/computer.

Also how much bookkeeping in general have you done in your EP games?

Posthumans view progress from the lens of it being the logical next step for transhumanity. The features and strengths of humans would be exaggerated and central, but whose qualitative difference on a continuum would be reminiscent of evolutionary controversy over the cognitive continuum between humans and non-human animals (eg paradigmatic paper Darwin's mistake).

Exhumans reject anthropocentric notions and don't see 'humanness' as an intrinsic good, or perhaps even as a negative, and would incorporate radical new cognitions, behavioural modes and biologies

Ultimates are transhuman 'ubermenchen' with philosophically specific posthuman ambitions

Beach Houses by Hyrotrioskjan.jpg

Ideas I've had running through my head:

An exoplanet that's Earth-like, with the exception that it's axial tilt is somewhere between 85 and 10 degrees. It has a biosphere that was introduced by anarchists, kept stable by the ocean that forms a near ring around the planet.

Factions so far:

-Big Man Nation; a bioconservative group that went through the Pandora gate in order to escape the horrors of the Solar System. They had a deal with the Love and Rage Collective that lasted just long enough for them to use the gate to get through. Mostly flats (with several "excused" splicers), they're hulking brutes caught in endemic warfare with the Tetrarchy.

-Tetrarchy; how they got through the gate is a mystery. Really, everything about them is. Composed of emergent AGIs, the Tetrarchy is actually four distinct groups that war with each other as much as they do the Big Man Nation. Two groups of critter pods and two groups of synthmorphs, the latter resembling flexbots in their ability to combine into massive earthmovers/war machines. Oddly enough, they seem to ignore gatecrashers.

-Echidna Tiamat; all female and all blond, this group numbers two dozen and is rumored to be an anarcho-syndicalist group. With skin hues ranging from chocolate to sepia to blue-black, they're always aglow with bioluminescent freckles and cartoonishly pear-shaped. While the Tetrarchy might attack gatecrashers that stray too close to their shelters, they seem to let the Echidna Tiamat do as they please. In one recorded case, a lone ET was ambushed by the Big Man Nation, only to be protected by a horde of critters as she killed one BMN "brave" by slamming his face into a boulder. Debates rage as to whether or not the ET created the Tetrarchy as an experiment.

-Mossy Rock Collective; named for the moss-encrusted boulder ten meters from the Pandora gate, this anarchist collective currently numbers 400 and is the BMN's lesser bogeyman. Their attempts at trying to communicate with the ET have all met with failure. Maybe a third party could help?

>>
>>44570165

A case also has it's own social stigma, it depends where you live.

The Pod stigma is basically three prongs, one, Pre-Fall they were used as AI servants so loads of people who see a pod still see robo-surfs
two, during the Fall, TITANs and the like subverted Pods en masse as killing machines, leading many to have unpleasant memories of Pods attacking humans
three, post-fall only people who are indentures or otherwise poor typically sleeve into a pod, barring certain exotics - it's a clear sign to a lot of people who still believe in social class you're on the lower end of it.

Thank you. The ET are modeled after the "mother of monsters" archetype, obviously, and I figure the Tetrarchy's neutrality toward the ET reinforces that. Right now, I'm trying to figure out the population size for the BMN and each faction within the Tetrarchy. There's most likely more than one gate, too, so the idea of exhumans invading is an entertaining one.

>Sitting with the local anarchists, the PCs receive an alert through the local mesh. The BMN has declared war on the MRC, flex cutters and shotgun pistols raised to the sky.
>PCs encounter a truly gargantuan ET wallowing in a lithia spring, chatting with a factor.
>PCs find a second Pandora gate right as an exhuman lopes out of it.
>A Tetrarchy fort is discovered, blown apart and its inhabitants dead. Ozma agents out of nowhere!
>While assisting a neo-orangutan scientist out in the field, the PCs end up engaged in a running battle with two opposed Tetrarchy factions. It's several kilometers to the MRC's settlement.

I would say that posthumanity is the end goal of transhumanity, the destination that 95% of the setting (fuck you Jovians) are on the road towards.

EXhumans are people who were on that road and then saw some mountains off in the other direction and went "I wonder what's over there?" and started forging their own path that was radically different.

The end goal is.. similar but the methodology, the motivations and the end result is not really the same. While a transhuman seeks to become posthuman - that is, human but so much better at human-ing than humans were before - an exhuman, as the name suggests, seeks to STOP being human in any sense of the term. Posthumans would still have humanity somewhere about them, as a quality, but in a different capacity. Exhumans would not.

Everyone is already a posthuman in the setting because they are just digital copies being emulated on either biological or synthetic hardware. The concept of species only persists because everyone still remembers what they were once like.

The setting really mangles the idea of posthumans in order to jam in it's existential horror stuff.

They also have all these space societies that I do like but with Earth refugees outnumbering fucking everyone in basically every station I think it's a stretch for them to have developed so soon. They should have made the setting a few decades after the fall at least and made a lot fewer egos making it off Earth.

I run Exhumans as essentially MMO trolls/powergamers, and low-level Ultimates like your average college libertarian who can actually throw a punch. High level Ultimates are either the same but deadlier or full on kool-aid cult lunatics, with the rare decent person acting responsibly sprinkled in.

But now it's full of hundreds of millions of infugees from Earth that are going to completely dilute any preexisting cultures through sheer numbers. As stated earlier they needed to place the game setting much later after the fall to have given time for those cultures to develop.

That actually is a point as to why there are so many criminals on Titan.

Normally, it is very selective on who gets a new body or not. Titanians just try to give everybody a body and quite a few dont assimilate.

yeah, but most of the infugees are in cold storage, their egos are saved but not active or conscious. Those that are are mostly indentures, not really cultural movers and shakers, or on habitats that orbit earth, so preoccupied with earth anyway.

Also, the most populous inner system locales can't really have their culture diluted, it would be like diluting the culture of the City from transmetropolitan, you just get more of it.

It's become almost a running gag to explain aspects of Titan to a Swedish friend of mine and listen to him get incredibly angry at how Spess Sweden is somehow even more ultra-liberal and retarded than RL Sweden. Also that they managed to replace non-integrating Somalis with non-integrating Russians, of all possible things.

Annoys me so much that they have the Titans on top of the TITANS.

Couldn't they just had the moon Titain renamed New Scandinavia or some thing?
