Ugly, the little bastards are infatuated with technology. Whether found in the wild or with orcs, Kobolds are almost always accompanied or working in some way with gremlins. Both of which cause more damage to machines than good. Doesn't keep them from being the only creature in the Orcish armies from being cunning enough to design machines, curiously enough they have excellent memories, capable of taking apart and putting machines back together almost perfectly. When taught to write, Kobolds are known to write schematics of things they've taken apart. Kobolds are the only race that won't get torn apart by a pack of Gremlins, no one really knows why.
Pic related is a Kobold from the Orcish armies, part of a Coughing Squad, known for their use of dangerous chemicals and gases. They're known to use Gremlins to lure soldiers out of their trenches or fortifications into the toxic fumes.

Both, two different subspecies of lizardfolk. The rule of thumb is that the cuter it is the dumber it is. The ugly ones live in their own settlements and tend to be on par with gnomes in mechanical engineering. And far more advanced with traps in particular. The cutebolds tend to live in warrens that are within the walls of a different species' city and live off of table scraps and what money they can make by being rat catchers and sewer maintenance.

Depends on the story I'm trying to tell, the setting, and the PC's - who ultimately determine whether or not your inserted fetish works or not. The Dwarf Cleric is not going to agree with the Dragonborn Fighter that the little raptor people are 'cute'.

Personally? I go for a mix of all three. They scamper around like little raptors, are attracted to shiny things, and love to cuddle. They also tend to eat most anything that wanders into their territory like land piranhas, and have natural resistance to fire and poison.

In my setting; Kobolds are the creation of Wizards. Their race has been entirely conjured and about half of them out there now are either conjured or born naturally from all the free kobolds out there.

Kobolds were created by Wizards to be servants and many of them still flock towards authority figures and powerful magic. They also come in three distinct flavors.

I want to like that picture, but it looks like that Kobold either has a really weirdly thick tail, or their tail is sprouting from their lower back instead of their pelvis.
>>
>>44520368
I feel like it makes sense having it start from the lower back since its that thick. 4/9 would play with.

>>
>>44520386
The thick tail just doesn't look right to me, compared to how thin and lithe every other part of the character looks.

It also makes their hotpants look weird, like the tail is sprouting directly where the waistband should be. How are they staying up?
>>
>>44520482
Maybe it has a strap around the top of the tail like a bra strap? I'd also imagine that the tail would be able to function as a third arm.

An underveloped small weak lizard race worshiping a species that died out, thanks to their abbility to breed quickly slavers capture them and use them as food for the other slaves.
If a kobold is lucky some weird or sentimental guy will buy it as a clumsy servant.
Playing a dessert slaver settings where the players have the players are bonty hunters/slave reclaimers.
Pretty fun, lots of political intrique and moral choices that affect the story.

They're dressed as shy guys on the surface and in the mines, as the mask keeps the light out of their eyes and acts as a primitive gas mask in the deep mines to protect from gas pockets, the robes provide armor, and because it became a part of their culture that these items should be as a second layer of skin that protects from the dangers of the world. The face below only gets shown to those they truly trust, masks only given to those they see as honorary members.

>>
>>44525394
The statement "cutebolds are for cute, and nothing more" is simply delusional. Every inclusion of content like this in a game or a discussion bears the mark of autism or fetishism -- big googly eyes, chubby "thick" bodies, highlighted breasts and asses, lips contorted into smiles straight out of japanese cartoons, even "cool" autistic nonsense like fucking lizard midgets in power armour. It's not a matter of letting people like what they like, but rather the fact that these threads become a dumping ground for the garbage from furaffinity and deviantart when there already exists more suitable locations for it in /b/ or /trash/. It isn't even necessarily fetishism, admittedly, but it's still tedious when people with an "affinity" for these kinds of creatures end up idealising something in the same overeager, autistic fashion as people do elves and dragons, or on 4chan, dwarves and marines. It's accepted that /tg/ is going to attract the most escapist, autistic anons on this entire site by virtue of the fact that tabletop RPGs, CYOAs, etc. are dominated by those that want to indulge in power/pleasure fantasies of being a barbarian or wizard or waifu-harem hero or triple-dicked dragon or whatever, but it doesn't change the fact that a lot of us want things other than escapism and indulgence and weird predilections for portrayals of midget lizards that are "cute" from our games. It feels like the crowd affiliated with furries (or "beastmen aficionados) and escapists dominate threads more than any other group on this board, which becomes a source of frustration that leads to spiteful, petty mockery and venting against people like yourself that might well be harmless, albeit undesired.

I tend to have a bunch of different kinds of kobolds in most of the settings I make. The setting I'm working on now has drakes being the most common kind of dragon.

They're intelligent creatures, based off of elements(classical), pairs of elements(Earth+Wind=Dust, etc), types of terrain(jungles, snow, swamps, etc), and physical concepts(space, time, etc), and their kobolds take after them.

An Earth drake's kobolds would be taller, bulkier, and lightly hunched-over with narrow faces and snouts, and would have stony horns, spikes on their backs, and a knack for stoneworking and gemcutting. A Fire drake and its kobolds are more, "classical dragon," in appearance, with shorter, bony horns, and the kobolds having vestigial wings and a penchant for black powder, explosives, and other, similar weapons that, in general, look like fireworks when they're used. Water drakes' kobolds are coral cultivators, and have a thick, cetacean tail for swimming, a muscular, ray-like mantle for steering, and patterns of bioluminescent spots on their backs, like those of the Water drakes themselves. Wind drakes and their kobolds are thin and softspoken, and act as caretakers for veritable menageries of animals, both magical and non; while the drakes have feathered wings, the kobolds have feathered neck-ruffs and a tuft of feathers on the tip of their tails, and tend toward white, with the drakes' pale blue and yellow patterns being uncommon.
>>
>>44528518
Ooo, that's a cool racial balance you have there.

Ugly by (normal) human standards, I guess. They're also about 400 years more advanced than every other species on the face of the planet. All the incredible intelligence of dragons, but without the strength they had to be more ingenious. That eventually lead to them slaughtering their draconic masters and sealing themselves underground (which had long since been vacated by the dwarves, who mostly lived up at the poles once they collectively turned to undeath to ensure their continued existence as a species once the gods blew them the fuck out).

500 some-odd years later and they start surging up to the surface with roughly early 20th century weaponry in an otherwise roughly 16th century world.

>>
>>44528518
>>44528663
Most of what the kobolds do is based off of what their patron drakes do:

The Earth drakes' kobolds prefer javelins and katars because their patrons have enormous stony spikes on the backs of their forelimbs' claws and can launch the stone spikes on their tails at range; they do gemcutting and stoneworking, because their patrons can control the earth around them.

Fire drakes' kobolds prefer black powder because the ingredients are readily available in their environment, and their patrons spit showers of sparks and clusters of air-reactive, firework-star-like detritus that form in the organ that produces their breath weapon.

Water drakes have skin rich in chromatophores, and their kobolds have patches of chromatophores on the underside of their mantles, and both use them in conjunction with their bioluminescent spots, which they can flash on and off, to confuse or scare away prey or potential threats.

Wind drakes and their kobolds tend to fight by directing, supporting, and healing the animals they care for.

They're all like that.

When you start talking about the conceptual drakes, though, it gets a bit weird. Just as an example, Warp drakes, drakes that embody the concept of space or dimension, can modify it; the older ones' lairs often resemble multi-layered tesseracts, and they can attack at range with natural weapons, or even redirect attacks that missed them. Chrono drakes manipulate time, and the older ones are basically Tracer from Overwatch, or Weaver from DotA 2, in how they fight. Namely in the whole, "Oh, you're winning? Let me just rewind myself to a few rounds ago when I was at nearly full health and had my breath weapon ready to go," thing. They can also, "fast-forward," themselves as a sort of brute-force teleport.
