why would anyone play cannon fodder? Even Orks are better at least ork boy will kill some people before he goes down instead of getting blasted by butthurt comissar.

flak armour can turn a lethal shot into life threatening and protects from flak, a major killer in war. It's just not as good as ancient power armour, alien chitin or space nano-fabrics.

>gun so weak you might as well just throw rocks and it would be an uprgade
but lasguns are pretty good they can take chunks out of concrete, it's just most guardsmen fight aginst super-human monsters, eldrich abominations, terrain changing super predators and undead robots who are all tougher than concrete
>life expectancy of 7 hours
depends on your role and theater
>why would anyone play cannon fodder?
because it's nice to play the underdog, because they're more relate-able than undead robots, because they're a flexible codex, because you like the minis, because you like tanks, because you want to play space 1st cavalry

Let's not forget that it outright stops tub projectiles, which puts the shitty guardsmen above massive amounts of rebels, cultists and xenos. Especially since they often dont even have flack amour themselves.

Overall, 2.5/10 bait, could have done better

It isn't all bad

the combat life expectancy for a lancaster bomber's rear gunner was 30 seconds. you've got it better than them.

Probably absolute life expectancy versus life expectancy in combat. Apparently some writer wanted to be a turret gunner when he was a boy during the war, and his dad took him to the airfield to show him how they needed to wash the turret gunners out with a hose. Minengeschöß was pretty good.

I recall WWI aviators having a life expectancy measured in hours. Something like 24 or 48 hours from hitting the front, most bit the dust. The trenches weren't much better, of course. If you went to France with Britain's professional army, you most likely didn't see the end of the war.

But at least in the trenches, you could get injured and be sent off. In the air, no such luck.

None too surprising, given parachutes weren't invented yet.

Now, I'm curious how was life for the Navy during WW1?
>>
>>44461682
>None too surprising, given parachutes weren't invented yet.

Oh, they'd been invented. They were issued to crew of observation balloons on both sides, and to German pilots. The Allies refused to outfit their pilots with parachutes, because they thought that the pilot would then jump to safety when hit, instead of fighting or trying to save his damaged aircraft.

Yeah, Allied command was really goddamn stupid during WWI.

>Now, I'm curious how was life for the Navy during WW1?

Depends. Probably a whole lot of sitting around. Shelling stuff at Gallipoli as a Brit, shooting torpedoes at Americans as a German.

40k seems to suffer from a perspective problem.

Most guard conflicts involve cultists, rebels, pirates or orks. Their weaponry is excellent to satisfactory for such situations.

The problem is the actual tabletop game is dominated by giant supermen with fully automatic armour piercing grenade launchers. Not being able to stop a bolter does not make their armour shit.
>>
>>44462016
Maybe all we Ork boyz do is fight 'n' die, but ya know what? We'z good at it and we'z still gonna win!

What standard armor can even stop a bolt? I think aside from Terminators (and their equivalents) and force fields nothing really wants to take a bolt to the face.

It also is super effective against modern munitions, like 7.62 or 5.56. Flak also can be made out of everything- the Imperium actually produces fucking spray cans that when sprayed on clothes, it turns the clothing into flak armor.

why don't Imperial Guard squads have squad automatic weapons? It could be as simple as a slightly larger lasgun with a larger powerpack. The Russians did it with the RPK, basically the same as an ak, but beefier and built for a different purpose. They could give one squad member a slightly bigger lasgun for suppressing fire, and issue scoped lasguns to marksmen in each battalion.

Because the imperial guard are god damned bad ass heroes, each and every one of them should be issued a standard template Mars forged wheel barrow just to carry his giant fucking testicles.

These are men who willingly get sent out into space to fight mindless kill bots, giant hive mind bio engineered murder insects, torture fuelled immortals, 8 ft tall post human mutants and gods so hideously insane that even to speak their name can cause them to pull your asshole out through your mouth and fuck it.

And they do all this in a padded jacket and a laser gun so weak they might as well be equipped with a fucking flash light. Yet millions of them sign up to fight and die on barren plants light years from home worlds they will never see again.

Why would you play as imperial guard ?
Because they are the best humanity has to offer and if they can't grind you under the wheels of their tanks they'll choke you to death with their dead.

This.

Especially in the tabletop which is just full of cheese and megazords at the moment, we seem to forget that even the basic troops of each faction are insanely deadly and tough beyond the standards of anything we know

The TT pisses me off sometimes with it's focus on these stupid centrepiece models that push the fluff to breaking point and cheese-lists that ignore the basics of a faction

>>
>>44472414

Curiously, a bolter round will only kill a space marine on a 1 in 6 chance, so lasguns aren't particularly less effective at killing marines than bolters.
>>
>>44469417
The old lore hellguns are supposed to work like that. They work like lasguns, but just shoot way more regular shots. As opposed to hotshots, which are now AP3 badasses. I think they have the hotshot volley gun now, which seems like it's the squad support version of the hotshot, but I don't really know why the old lore hellgun hasn't made more appearances.

Also there are multilasers.
>>
>>44461148
Flak armor is actually pretty good compared to modern standards. And a lasgun is literally a rapid fire laser gun, try using that against conventional bullets. The only reason why bolters are so good is that they're wielded by 9 foot tall badasses that can set down a rain of bullets so thick they can block out the sun.

It does make a sound akin to a round going off. There are multiple references in novels to the "crack," of lasguns firing. I don't know where >>44470012 got his information on them being so quiet, but many of the novels claim he's talking out of his ass.

Lasguns are pretty awesome, but they're not THAT awesome. They hit with about the strength of a 7.62 NATO round, they are very easy on logistics, by their nature we can assume that they are near to laser-accurate at close ranges if you can handle the recoil, and being laser-based technology we can also assume that gravity doesn't effect them *too* much.

Parachutes were invented - they weren't given to pilots because the commanders thought that men wouldn't attack hard enough in their flying box kites if they could jump out at any time.

The Navy can be summed up by very long periods of inaction interspersed with occasional periods of extreme violence. If your ship was hit heavily you were unlikely to survive, but overall mortality rates still much lower than in the army. Except submarines - they really were little more than iron coffins.
