Welcome to The Lost Island Quest. Last thread our hero, Alan Rodain, killed an entire tribe's worth of orcs and witnessed the miracle of conception. Now, he wonders whether this was all really worth it.

Quissonce finishes the last of her retching before wiping her mouth with her sleeve. “Holy shit, kill that fucking thing.”

Finn holds the newborn orc with the stalks still coming out of its head to his chest. “That's a baby.”

Quissonce points from her bent position. “That's a monstrosity.”

Finn looks at her angrily. “Do you think human birth looks neat and clean? Sure, it looks a little mal-formed now, but cats are born blind and deaf and they grow up fine.”

Rowe finally has her bearings again. “Why did you keep bleeding on them though?”

Finn fidgets a bit, bouncing the orc baby to hush its wailing and looks a little reluctant to speak. “Well, as well as nutrients from the soil and regular watering, uh, they need non-Orcish blood from a sapient creature, but that's not –”

“Burn it all down. We need to purge.” Quissonce has finally returned to her standing position.

Gabby chuckles. “The wizard's advocating genocidal infanticide, but I'm the evil one.”

Quissonce looks over to Eve. “C'mon Eve.” She waves her hand. “Time to go all flamey on them.”

“I think its kinda cute.” Eve admits. Quissonce shakes her head. Sounds like she's breathing through her mouth, as if she's afraid of whatever smell the infant orc might be giving off.

“Yeah, it's time to leave.” You've had enough of orcs for a lifetime and discovering the mysteries of their biology was never something you asked for. Finn begins to wrap the child in a large rag stored in his bag and the rest of your allies head to deal with the last remaining tasks before you can leave.

The six goblins are released from captivity and as Quissonce is the only one who can speak Goblin, she goes to inform them of the change in leadership. Kyra returns from her long search through the refuse pile. Most of the crap in there was useless garbage, but she shows you one thing the orcs threw away that seems quite interesting.

It's a painting. It looks to be an artisan's work, but the monetary value isn't the eye-catching part of it. It displays a large waterfall in the middle of the forest surrounded by lithe, pointy-eared figures. Elves. When you ask Hagnoth the shaman about it, he says the tribe found it in an old ruin deeper into the forest.

Dolah finishes packing up the women and children with supplies and food. Turns out the orcs had a bit of an underground tunnel that functioned as a basement to store food. Enough to feed the tribe's warriors during lean times. It's enough to nourish the entire exodus of individuals you are taking back to Seaside. They carry what they can on their backs and your crew prepares to abandon this ghost town.

Rowe comes up to you, flanked by Eve. “It's going to take us five days at least to march these people back to Seaside, even if we really press them. If someone stumbles across this in the next few days, it would be very easy to follow us. Burning the whole thing down won't exactly cover our tracks, but it sends any would-be pursuers a much different message about who we are. Quissonce, Kyra, and I say burn. Eve, Gabby and Dolah say don't. Gale abstained. You're the tie-breaker.”

“Don't. Just because one tribe was this bad doesn't mean the rest necessarily are. Those lime-green orcs show up, I don't want to have us sending them a message be the thing that sabotages any chance of a peace treaty.”

Rowe nods. “Alright. Well, the orcs are much more lethargic in the day time so we're going to be marching at afternoon and resting during the morning. Tonight will be the hardest, but people will adjust. We'll have to graze the horses the last day, but that shouldn't be much of a problem. Dolah says the women shouldn't start anything. I actually believe her. From what I've seen these people are very pack-like and Dolah's manged to establish herself as the alpha, much as she may be reluctant to say that.”

You laugh a bit. “You think she'll convert them?”

Rowe snickers. “Oh God, Gabby would implode.”

You get yourselves to herding the Forest Hunter tribe out of the forest and into the plains, where your five night journey begins. All combined, you have roughly twelve hours of down time to spend in whatever way you wish.

You decide to check out that idol Rowe picked off the chieftain's body. It is made out of what is most likely boar tusk, or potentially orc tusk. You aren't quite sure on that front. It is shaped in the image of a heavily-pregnant female orc. There are red smears on its face that you quickly investigate to discover is blood and not some sort of berry juice.

Casting Detect Magic on the thing reveals it has a faint conjuration aura to it. You spend many hours looking into it, trying to gleam its properties without having to resort to putting it on and potentially cursing yourself and turning yourself into a pregnant orc or whatever it may do.

Unfortunately, you are no expert. And all your education, investigations, ingenuity and talent for magic reveals more of your incompetence in this field of study and how you don't have the faintest clue on what to do to figure out the magical properties of an item.

Thank The Great Will for Quissonce then. The seemingly always-conscious elf wizard has spent decades learning about magic and probably has a much better base to conduct such explorations from. You hand the thing off to her after hours of wasting your time as well as giving her the helm, asking her to figure out the command word if she can. She gives you a thumbs up and gets to work figuring out their secrets.
>>
At one point during your travel back to Seaside you approach a bored-looking Gabby. She looks over to you lazily, her horse surrounded by tiny orc children.

“So, Gabby. You were against burning down the village. I would have sworn, out of everybody, you would be the most gung-ho about that.”

She scoffs. “Look, burning down villages is for when you're actually a bunch of bad-asses that don't take shit. We burn that place down trying to look cool and someone follows us anyway? They see that fucking guy.” She points towards Finn, who is currently coddling that new-born orc he uprooted. “They come looking for some hardcore bastards and find we're a bunch of nannies and Dolahs. And then we go down in orc history as the losers who tried to act tough. You want to burn villages, be consistent. Fill them with the corpses of women and children first.”

Dolah laughs from where she's riding, apparently eavesdropping on your conversation. “Who are you trying to convince Gabby. Us or yourself?”

Gabby looks at Dolah in confusion. “The fuck is that supposed to mean.”

Dolah turns to look back at you two and begins to speak in a mocking tone. “I didn't want to do the right thing, I just wanted to be even more evil. I-I-I promise.”

Gabby flips her off. “Fuck you, you cunt.” Oh god, she's blushing.

“Hahahaha.” You ride away from her filled with mirth. Gabby looks over to you and a combination of anger and desperation fills her face.

“Hey! Stop laughing. That's not all, OK. We could have been attacked that first night. It would have been a waste of Eve's fire spells. And. And. And burning down their village might have made the orc women mutiny. It was a tactical decision. TACTICAL!”

As you ride away, Quissonce rides up to you, handing you back the two objects you asked her to inspect.

“The command phrase is 'mermaid mode'.” She hands the helm to you. “It allows you to breathe underwater and changes your feet to flippers to help you swim.” Huh, you wonder if there are actual mermaids on this place. Wouldn't be the weirdest thing you've ever heard of. “And the idol, when worn around the neck, allows for you to keep your ass moving even when you should be unconscious or dying. Good for short bursts of activity when the chips are down, but honestly wearing this thing could get you killed just as easily as save your life if you aren't smart with how you use it. It also seems to give a more enhanced effects to those with Orcish blood, so this might be best to hand off to Dolah.”

You ride up next to Mastema and get Dolah's attention before shoving the idol in her hand. She looks down at it confused.

“It's apparently useful for keeping yourself moving even when you should be unconscious. Quissonce said it was better for somebody with Orcish blood, so I figure'd you'd use it best.”

Hagnoth coughs loudly from where he's walking to get your attention. “It's also been passed from Chieftain to Chieftain of the Forest Hunter tribe for generations.”

Dolah gives the shaman a hard look. “I'm not your Chieftain.” She looks back to you. “Thank you, Alan. This will be useful.” She places the dried tendon the idol is looped on around her neck and wears it. She sits a little straighter as she feels the magic flow through her. “Huh. Well, I guess I'll be getting in touch with my Orcish side a bit more.”

“The side that grows out of the ground like a fucking potato?” Gabby shouts from where she rides behind the two of you. “Alan, watch out. If 'getting in touch' means what I think it means, she's going to throw you to the ground and take you against your great will.”

Dolah sighs before responding. “I said 'Orcish' not 'Gabby'!”

Rowe makes a shout of exasperation. “Will you two just fuck already?!”

Gale laughs a bit before honestly asking, “Which two?”

“Choose whatever combination you want. We're almost there.” Rowe kicks her horse into gear and rides ahead.

You make it back to Seaside late at night, where a whole contingent of guards led by Betsy meets you. Blackburn is there too and he graciously welcomes you back before quickly moving off to ensure the safety and comfort of Speaker and Talker.

Your group dismounts as Dolah moves among the orcs assuring them that everything will be alright. The guards frankly look quite at ease. Betsy has a scowl on her face, but that might just be because of the late hours she's forced to work.

After talking with his two agents for a while, Speaker gets escorted into Seaside as Finn and Blackburn approach Hagnoth. Finn serves as a translator between the two of them and they have a short conversation.

Hagnoth goes and collects his people, guiding them inside, escorted by the platoon of armed men. The goblins are escorted in a short while later and finally all that remains is Blackburn and your group, standing outside the gates of the town.

“Wonderful work! May I just –” before Blackburn can finish his sentence an arrow arcs out from a grassy knoll not too far from where you're all standing and pierces the side of his neck. He reaches up to it as grey-blue blood begins to pour from the wound and he stumbles to the ground, dying.

“The fuck?” Gabby asks as you all turn your heads to watch as one of those lime-green orcs has stood up from where he must have been lying in the grass.

He shakes his bow angrily at you and shouts “Death to the foreigners!” before turning around and quickly dashing back into the grassy plains behind the knoll he fired his shot from.

You look back to the dead Blackburn as it slowly transforms back to its doppelganger form.

Wait. What? You were being followed? Blackburn was a doppelganger? You have so many questions.

Even Kyra, the most unflappable of your group is too shocked to act for those first few seconds.

Suddenly the side door to the main gate slams open and Betsy yells at you. “Get in here, quick!” As she does so another arrow comes arcing from the darkness towards Gabby. She quickly pivots on instinct and smacks it out of the air. You all rush for the gate, Dolah moving the slowest as she keeps her shield up towards the darkness. Three more arrows plink off her shield, before one manages to stick itself right between one of the plates on her armor. You hear her grunt in pain.

Betsy slams the door as you all make it through and ushers you into the open area behind the eastern gate of Seaside. Thankfully your horses had already been let in with the gaggle of orc captives. You wouldn't have been able to leave Tornado behind. Betsy yells up to her men to return fire before telling you to rush to Blackburn's office at the Overseer's complex.

You quickly make your way there, Dolah healing herself with her magical abilities. After the pinpricks to assure you are all who you say you are and a small armed escort you reach Blackburn's office as he yells orders to his aide.

“I don't care. Tell Hildebrandt that body needs to remain untouched until they back off.” The aide nods before running off. Blackburn nods to you all before pulling out his knife and cutting himself, bleeding into that wine cup. “Great to see you all alive and well. Excellent work on your mission.” He sits down, sounding much angrier than his praising words indicate.

“Blackburn, what was that?” Rowe asks as she takes her seat.

He sighs. “That was the immense effort it takes to turn, utilize and test drive an asset absolutely gone to waste. At least I can rest knowing it worked. Better it than one of you.”

He grabs a piece of vellum from behind him and lays it out on the table.

And you have brought me many new mouths to feed. That is not to say I am chastising you. I much prefer this to hearing you've been slaughtering women and children out in the field.”

“What's a greenskin?” Dolah asks, looking at the freshly dried ink.

“Hagnoth assures me it is the Orcish term for a goblin/orc half-breed. They possess that sickly green color and are the things currently firing on our position.”

“Well we should ride out to meet them.” Gale offers. Blackburn shakes his head.

“They're sneaky, cowardly and it is night time. I assure you we would be throwing away lives for a modicum amount of advancement. They'll retreat before morning. Again, I would like to thank you for your efforts. You have taken care of a source of problems for Seaside and reunited me with some friends I thought long dead. “Did I hear you right? You turned a doppleganger to our side? The one that just died?”

Blackburn looks you in the eyes as he finishes filling up his glass. “Yes. Took quite a lot of effort, but I was proud to have finally gotten something on this forsaken Isle to work for us rather than against us. And now it's gone, leaving us with only two of them left.” Wait, that doesn't add up.

“I thought you had captured four of them. Don't you mean three?”

He looks you dead in the eyes before responding. “Two.” Oh.

Dolah sighs. “I am going to leave now before somebody says something they should not say around me.” She gets up and leaves with her share. Gale follows, indicating he really doesn't care about this intrigue bullshit, but thanks you one last time for giving him a chance for some payback.

Gabby speaks up after they've left. “Wait, you trusted one of those fucking things?”

Blackburn turns to her, getting out glasses for the rest of you before letting you pour your drinks. “I assure you I did not have Betsy leading a contingent of guards to watch a group of orcs the rest of you managed to handle just fine by yourselves for an entire week. I had it under constant guard and I kept a tight leash on what it could and couldn't do. I was whispering into it's ear from here the whole time it was greeting you all. The thing actually seemed giddy to get to 'play' me. It thought I was an interesting personality.”
>>
Rowe takes a sip of her drink. “What did they infiltrate Seaside for?”

Blackburn chuckles. “They were bored. At first I thought they were merely trying to obfuscate their real goals when they told me, but I've come around to the idea. They have no employer, no ulterior motive, no organization. Most of them met each other after they had already infiltrated. They, like many of the things on this Island, seemed to be 'playing with the new toy'. Our society is much more interesting than orcs, apparently.”

“I'll take the compliment.” Quissonce shrugs.

“One of them admitted it eventually wanted to kill and replace me to see how well it could run the town. The one that passed away in custody wanted to take Betsy's place. The one that just died out there had been interested in our . . . mating practices. It killed a half-elf prostitute, dumped the body in the sea and then after collecting a week's worth of wages took the form of a male sailor and spent all the money it had earned sleeping with as many different prostitutes as it could afford. It repeated this process multiple times.”

Eve makes a disgusted noise. “Now I'm kinda glad it died.”

“Alright, thanks for the information Blackburn. Sword and Shield?” you ask, looking around at your compatriots. After a round of agreement and the finishing of their drinks, they follow you outside.

You spot Dolah waiting for you all as you head away from the Overseer's Complex.

Gabby quickly runs up to you and throws an arm around your shoulder before loudly saying “Man, I can't believe Blackburn is so into child-fucking!”

Dolah gets that grimace on her face again before simply saying “Cute.”

“Oh hello Dolah, didn't see you there. How's it hanging, girl?” Gabby grins widely at her.

“You should tell Blackburn that gnomes make an ethical alternative.” Dolah looks at the both of you deadpan as you slowly register what she just said.

It's only hearing Eve shout “RUDE!” from behind you all that leads the three of you into cracking up.

Gabby snickers and then raises her hand for a high-five. “Okay, that was pretty funny, give it here.” Dolah indulges Gabby before you all make your way down to The Sword and Shield.

The young kid is busy watching the bar and greets you all as you walk towards your usual table.

The serving wenches bring you your drinks and you settle into a nice, good night of enjoying yourselves for a job well done.

Dolah left cause she didn't want to hear what happened with the doppleganger in custody's death or something equally unethical.

Then Gabby spouts something randomly to try to get under her skin. Didn't work.

You decide to chat with Dolah for a bit. She and Gabby are already talking and you wait for a lull in their conversation to occur.

“So, why do you wear men's armor?” Gabby asks.

Dolah frowns in confusion. “This isn't men's armor. It was designed specifically for me.”

“Then where are the . . .” Gabby gestures with her drink. Dolah continues to look confused. Gabby starts pointing at her chest. Dolah raises her hand to her plate and feels around the chest area while looking at it.

“What?” Dolah asks.

“The boob pockets or whatever.”

Dolah's eyes go wide as she laughs a bit. “The what pockets?”

Gabby looks a bit embarrassed. “Y'know, I don't know the official name for them. But the place for the boobs to go.”

“There is no place for that. That isn't a thing.”

“Rowe and Kyra's stuff has boob pockets.”

“They wear leather. It's form-fitting. No blacksmith who doesn't want to be laughed out of business would make armor with facsimiles of breasts on them. In fact, I think that would actually make the armor much worse.”

Gabby waves her hand before getting up to grab another drink. “Whatever.” Dolah chuckles.

Nah it's right where it belongs. It's a random copy pasta thrown around.

You open with “So is eating a salad cannibalism for you now?”

Dolah laughs as she pops an ice cube into her mouth.
“Maybe. Did you notice they only eat meat and fruit?” Huh, you didn't. “I should ask Gilda about that though. She took some of my blood earlier, maybe she can tell me if I'm becoming more like the orcs on the Island.”

“How did your armor get magic?” That is a curious thing. Her armor was mundane off the Island and its the same set she wore when she first arrived.

“A blessing from The Great Will.”

“Really?” you look at her stunned. He directly gave her armor that enchantment?

“I rubbed it and my weapon in holy water, before resting it at the altar in Calloway's chapel. The morning we were to leave for the Forest Hunter tribe it gleamed with a magical light. I see no other explanation.” That is a very convincing argument. As you start on your second drink, you switch to the topic of the refugees.

“What's the plan with dealing with the remnants of the Forest Hunter tribe?”

Dolah sighs. “Well, I was able to convince Blackburn to pay those rival healers of Calloway a stipend to run a day care for the children. They will educate them and care for them and hopefully instruct some better form of morality for them than their evil-hearted fathers. The females will be forced into doing day laborer work, for pay of course. They're strong enough to help with off-loading the ships and doing unskilled jobs. Now, Blackburn and I are also very keenly aware that many of the male workers already doing these tasks are of Orcish descent. Full-orcs, half-orcs, quarter-orcs. All of them single. We're going to take our hands off and hope that nature takes its course.” Dolah raises her hands physically and shrugs.

I dunno why the doppleganger option is there. We saw her get shot and heal herself like less than a hour ago.

Sorry its a bit of a joke option. You don't seriously think she's a doppelganger, you're noting a slight change in personality with a joke.

Then on a lighter note
>Are you a doppelganger?
>What's going on with you and Gabby?
Since they are related.

We should mention that since doppelgänger have blue blood they're technically aristocrats.

You're about half-way through your third drink before you ask this question that has been buzzing around your mind. “Alright. What's going on with you and Gabby?”

She looks at you funny. “What do you mean?”

You scratch your head looking for your thoughts. “You agreed on something. You laughed together. You high-fived her! You're talking to each other. And your insults and arguments are a lot less loud and much more subdued. It's almost like you two are . . . friends.”

She laughs. “I'll admit, we're in a much better place than we were a month ago.”

“What happened?”
>>
“Have you ever pushed with all your might against a wall, Alan?” You look at her confused. “You push and push and it feels like the wall is pushing back just as hard with no progress being made. That is what it felt like dealing with Gabby.” She looks over to where most of your party is now gathered, Quissonce performing that lyrical poetry to the rest of your crew's enjoyment. “And I realized something. What if she's doing the same thing? Pushing and pushing against a wall because it's there. Gabby is the most stubborn individual I have ever met. She could keep that up forever. I figured I would stop being the nagging morality figure for her to hate. Push a little less and relax. Don't engage her as much. Argue less. Banter a bit. Tell a joke once in a while. And as I stop being one extreme I'm starting to see her stop being the other one.”

“That's actually pretty wise Dolah.”

She sighs. “Well I have you to thank for that. Watching you doubt your commitment on that first day right after I chastised you made me realize that chewing people out and acting superior pushes people away from the faith. Took me some time too. To realize that Gabby wasn't merely an obstacle in your path to salvation, but a living, breathing person with potential for it too.” You look over to where Gabby is. She's smiling and laughing as Quissonce gets to the next rhyme in the stanza. “There's good in her.”

Kyra.

You begin drinking your fourth drink of the night. You feel a nice buzz settle in.

“How does it feel to meet Island orcs?”

“Like banging my head against a wall. They are the worst combination of stupid and evil.”

“You don't feel any kinship to them?”

Dolah shakes her head. “No. I tried as best I can, but their culture is horrible. It's like I've stepped into a portal back in time.”

That peaks your curiosity. “What were ancient orcs like?”

“Like this. Stupid, war-mongering rapists that prided themselves on the size of their harems and their body counts rather than try to achieve something. There are a lot of bad orcs around now, but at least we aren't like the wolves I'm seeing here. Tribal, primitive, obsessed with strength and that's it. A race of Gabbys.”

You laugh a bit. “What happened to playing nice?”

Dolah waves you away. “I didn't say it where she could hear me.”

“How's Calloway?”

“He's good. We've been talking a lot recently. The town's come together to rally behind his decision behind free healing. The other healers essentially got shut down and blacklisted. It's good to see a town come together like that. He may not hold an official position of office here like Blackburn, but Calloway's becoming a bit of a leader figure here in Seaside. You should go see him sometime. He says he's got more to teach you about your powers.”

Huh. You have been neglecting your clerical skills for some time now. But with so much choice available to you, it's hard to keep your focus on something for very long. You'll consider it though.

“You doing anything for New Years?” you ask.

Dolah frowns before the realization dawns on her. “Oh yeah, that's tomorrow isn't it. Slipped my mind completely. I don't have any plans, no.”

Everyone else about doing something for New Years.

Alright, this option wins and I'll open with that tomorrow.

>End of Thread

I'm running two days in a row. Tomorrow's thread is the New Year's thread special. Not actually run on New Years because I'm sure we all have parties to attend. Fireworks, fun and probably something exciting happening!
