It is 151 years since the Battle of Nashville, a two-day battle that represented the end of large-scale fighting in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. It was fought between the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Lieutenant General John Bell Hood and Federal forces under Major General George H. Thomas. In one of the largest victories achieved by the Union during the war, Thomas routed Hood's army, largely destroying it as an effective fighting force.

The battle was the finale in a disastrous year for Hood’s forces. The rebels lost a long summer campaign for Atlanta, Georgia, in September 1864 when Hood abandoned the city to the army of William T. Sherman. Hood then took his diminished force north into Tennessee. He hoped to draw Sherman out of the Deep South, but Sherman had enough troops to split his force and send part of it to chase Hood into Tennessee. Sherman airily indicated that this was exactly what he wanted and that if Hood "continues to march North, all the way to Ohio, I will supply him with rations."

At Spring Hill, Tennessee, the Confederates allowed a Union division to escape from Columbia and pass by them unmolested to Franklin, a small town south of Nashville. Enraged over this missed opportunity, Hood ordered futile frontal assaults at Franklin against entrenched Federals, many of whom were armed with repeating rifles. The fierce, five-hour Battle of Franklin on November 30 decimated his force and cost him a division commander and four brigadier generals. Undeterred, he continued on and besieged Thomas’ larger force at Nashville.

There, Hood constructed works along a five-mile-long line south of the city. Between the 8,000 men lost at Franklin and those detached under Nathan Bedford Forrest, who had been sent to capture Murfreesboro, Hood’s army was down to about 20,000 men. He hoped to draw Thomas into attacking him. After repulsing those attacks, Hood reasoned, he would counterattack and take the city.

Thomas had 70,000 men, over 55,000 of which he planned to use as maneuver troops. A severe ice storm halted operations until December 15. As the two sides glared at each other from their ice-bound entrenchments, Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant, unaware of the severity of the weather conditions, repeatedly sent telegrams from the East urging Thomas to move out of his works and attack the enemy. Thomas had been nicknamed "Old Slow-trot" before the war, when he restrained West Point cadets from galloping their horses. Grant referred to him by that old nickname because he felt Thomas was too slow in his movements in the field. When no action occurred in response to his telegrams, Grant sent an officer to observe the situation; that officer also carried an order relieving Thomas of command.

While Grant’s emissary was still on a Tennessee-bound train, the weather broke. Union troops moved out of their defenses, southeast along the Murfreesboro Road to assail and pin the Confederate right, and west along and between the Charlotte and Harding pikes. The lead troops on the Murfreesboro Road were inexperienced soldiers of the United States Colored Troops. They took shelter from Confederate rifle fire in a railroad cut, only to be enfiladed and cut to pieces by a previously unseen artillery battery. One Confederate soldier wrote disgustedly, "Where were those men’s officers? I did not see a single white body on that field." Other Federal troops of Maj. Gen. James Steedman’s command succeeded in keeping the Confederate right pinned, to prevent reinforcements against the main attack.

The westward movement went almost exactly according to Thomas’ plan. After driving off a small force west of town, the Federals swung southeast as if on a hinge. They outflanked a group of Confederate redoubts and drove the Rebels south. When morning dawned on the second day, the over-extended Confederate line had been compressed into roughly the shape of an upside-down U.

The western bend in the line was anchored on the heights of Shy’s Hill, the eastern bend atop the steep slopes of Peach Orchard (Overton’s) Hill. Federal assaults against the Hill, which had to be made over the tops of trees that the Confederates had felled on the slopes, met tremendous fire from the 2,000 infantrymen and supporting artillery of Lt. Gen. Steven D. Lee’s Corps. Some 6,000 Federals, including two divisions of USCT, made valiant attempts against the position but were repulsed. So many Union soldiers died on the slopes that it was said a person could walk from the top of the hill to the bottom without touching the ground.

Shy’s Hill was a different story. Around 4:00 p.m., two Union corps plus cavalry, over 40,000 men in all, attacked 5,000 under Maj. Gen. William Bate. Confederate artillery had been positioned in such a way that once the advancing Federals reached a certain point on the slope, the guns could not fire at them. The blue line swept over the crest, capturing most of the defenders.

The hill became known as Shy’s Hill after the battle. Confederate Colonel William Shy, of Franklin, was among the defenders. His body was later found on the hill, bayoneted to a tree, a bullet hole in his forehead. Controversy still continues over which side was actually responsible.

With the Shy’s Hill anchor gone, the rest of Hood’s line collapsed and fled toward Franklin. Darkness and exhaustion prevented effective pursuit, and the rag-tag remnants of the Army of Tennessee continued on to Tupelo, Mississippi, where Hood resigned his command. For his overwhelming victory, Thomas became one of only 13 officers to receive the Thanks of Congress in the war and was promoted from brigadier general in the regular U.S. Army to major general, U.S. Army.

Union losses in the fighting at Nashville numbered 387 killed, 2,558 wounded, and 112 captured/missing, while Hood lost around 1,500 killed and wounded as well as around 4,500 captured/missing.

The Battle of Nashville marked the effective end of the Army of Tennessee. Historian David Eicher remarked, "If Hood mortally wounded his army at Franklin, he would kill it two weeks later at Nashville." Although Hood blamed the entire debacle on his subordinates and the soldiers themselves, his career was over. He retreated with his army to Tupelo, Mississippi, resigned on January 13, 1865, and was not given another field command.

But the drama of the battle continued into the next century. On Christmas Eve 1977 a headless body was discovered next to a newly opened grave in Williamson County, Tennessee. The head was found nearby. The body was clothed in what appeared to be a tuxedo. The matter was referred to the state medical examiner who determined that this was a homicide, that the victim was a white male, 5' 11" tall, weighing 173 lbs., and approximately 26 years of age. The medical examiner further determined that the cause of death was a large caliber bullet wound to the head, and that the man had been dead for 6 to 12 months. Everything but the time of death was correct; the body was that of Colonel Shy, who had died defending the hill bearing his name 113 years before. The newly opened grave was his, and he had apparently been exhumed by grave robbers in search of Civil War collectibles. The remarkable state of preservation was due to the fact that Colonel Shy had been buried in a sealed cast iron coffin (also found nearby) and had been embalmed with a fluid heavily laced with arsenic.

Colonel Shy was reinterred with appropriate military honors. The cast iron coffin is on display at the Carter House in Franklin.

Nashville is a classic example of a late-ACW meatgrinder, where the battles had begun to prefigure the trench assaults of later years. It is a situation where strategic maneuver is all-important, and would be best played at the divisional level (6mm/10mm) to properly simulate this. (The Polemos rules or Longstreet are well suited for it.) The Western Theatre doesn't get as much attention as the Eastern, and this is one of its main battles. Also it's yet another good example of how personalities were such an issue among the leadership of the ACW.

We have a pretty large wargames community here in NZ. I live in one of the smaller south island cities and there are 4 wargames clubs here alone. They play everything from Historicals to GW to Distopian wars and Flames of War.

There's also a pretty healthy tournament scene, with a Kings of War tournament just recently been. My friend went to it and said it was glorious, most of the armies being historical/themed armies and immaculately painted.

Good to hear. I was concerned it might be hard to find games due to the relatively small population. It's not a 100% sure thing I'll be moving yet, but if I do, I'll be in/near either Palmerston North or Christchurch.

cool! Christchurch has a large wargaming community. not sure about palmertson north.

Christchurch is kind of a shithole though, its still fucked from the earthquake. road cones everywhere, sunken roads, potholes. Wellington and Auckland probably have the largest war game communities, largely due to being the most populated cities. Dunedin is a cool place to live, and has a few good clubs

NZ has always had a good wargaming scene, I think a big influx of Brit gamers coming over in the 70s and 80s certainly helped. A recent example of how strong the scene is, would be the Chunuk Bair diorama designed by Peter Jackson and the Perrys for Te Papa, and painted up by hundreds of gamers across the country. Of course we have Battlefront too, which really changed the gaming scene circa 2000, and became more popular among new gamers and kids than GW.

I echo Dunedin-anon's warning about Christchurch being a shithole; actually it was never that nice a place to begin with, but the earthquake and subsequent decline have made things even worse. Palmy is a student town; a little provincial perhaps, but once upon a time it had one of the best wargaming shops in the country and there's definitely a scene there.

Auckland and Wellington would probably be the best places overall. If you were in Palmy though you could just pop down to Wellington occasionally for games days. Or you could join Dunedin-anon down there in penguin-land but be prepared to freeze your arse off.
>>

>be prepared to freeze your arse off.
heh. Its the middle of summer and we still have hail showers and rain every second day.
There are actual pengiun colonies within 20 minutes drive of my house. Fucking penguins. Living here. The native maoris never came down this far south becuase it was just too cold for them. only the crazy white man would live in these conditions. oh and our 19th century housing doesn't help. I live in a house built in 1870, with no double glazing, no heating, and a leaking roof until about last year when our landlord fixed it. All the houses aren't like this, but lack of double glazing and central heating is pretty much ubiquitous.
>>
>>44185762
>crazy white man

By which you mean Scots of course. This explains all the stoicism and madness down at that godless end of the Mainland. Naturally as a Taranaki man I can sit in my muggy humid shithole and feel superior.

Did you know, on a /hwg/ note, that New Zealand has a Scottish Regiment? Well had, technically. It was formed during WW2 as a home guard unit, with the proviso that all recruits had to be of Scots descent. It drew four companies from the main centres, and spent most of its life in New Caledonia. Postwar it became the armoured car component of the NZ forces, zipping around the volcanic plateau in Daimlers and Ferrets. Around 1990 or so when our motorized force was reorganized it became a squadron of QAMR, but the Scottish connection is in name only now. According to the Army's protocol guide "Highland orders of dress (glengarry, kilt, and sporrans) are authorised for wear at the discretion of the squadron commander."

> Asafo is a Fante military institution, made up of local companies, each with its own name, number, regalia, shrine and set of flags, and imagery.
> This Asafo flag most likely dates from before Ghanaian independence in 1957 (note the British Union Jack in the upper-left canton) and served as an emblem of pride.
> The image in the field, of a creature looming over a decapitated corpse, suggests a severe warning to hostile parties.
> Fante arts, from a coastal area subject to more than five hundred years of direct interaction with European traders, bear witness to a long history of the creative borrowing of European forms. The three-headed monster here was probably inspired by the mythical creatures of European heraldry.

> Also I don't know what to do for their eyes

My advice; don't bother. Eyes are barely discernible at tabletop distances anyway and attempts to paint them usually result in crazy eye syndrome.

Other than that you've done a pretty tidy job, for a quick and easy improvement, get yourself some washes or even just a dip to use on the skin and uniforms, works wonders.
>>
>>44189456
Don't do the eyes if you aren't good at painting.
Its as simple as that.

They are shaded by their helmet anyway, so a simple darker wash over the face will be enough.
>>
>>44189456
are these your first miniatures?

Some advise:
Thin your paints. It might be the pic quality, but it seems to be rather thick in places.

You got that german paint set right?
Give your soldiers some variety in terms of colors.

Use the lighter grey for some of their tunics or pants.

The helmets covered by fabric are supposed to be beige with camo pattern. Those larger zeltbahn tunics too. (First guy in the front, left for example).

Neaten up a little where the flesh paint went into the uniforms or vice versa.

Also, don't do eyes. The wash will solve that problem for you.
>>
>>44189507
>>44189523

>Thin your paints.
I'm not an expert, but my gf sort of is and she helped me get the consistency (thickness, I guess) right after it was wayyy too thin at first and just went running off of the models. Basically I shook the pots fucking heaps like you guys suggested.

>You got that german paint set right? Give your soldiers some variety in terms of colors.
Yeah I got the German set but not quite all of the recommended basic paints, so I made do. I want them to be uniform in appearance, though the zeltbahns make it very difficult and I'm particularly bad at making them look camo without destroying the detail of their packs and weapons etc.

>Use the lighter grey for some of their tunics or pants.
I feel like the uniformity of colour helps disguise my lack of painting ability when the unit is viewed as a whole, particularly since the zeltbahns already diminish unit colour cohesion.

>The helmets covered by fabric are supposed to be beige with camo pattern.
Yeah I wasn't brave enough to paint them differently and I was counting on the lack of detail painting and the uniformity of the unit. Again, I don't want individual models to stand out (unless they're officers or something).

>Neaten up a little where the flesh paint went into the uniforms or vice versa.
Yeah the flesh is a little messy isn't it, looks terrible because the flesh is so bright compared to the other colours. But that's a result of me not being very good at painting. I'll try and clean up but the amount of hours I put into that unit of 10 already bodes poorly for the rest of my army.

Don't get irritated by the Fallschirmjaeger. That Sumpfmuster was used used by the entire german army during mid-late war. (SS being the exception)

There are tons of other tutorials as well. (He even has a great method of painting eyes, but honestly, i wouldn't bother if i were you.)

You kinda want milk consistency. Better 2 thin layers than 1 thick.

>I feel like the uniformity of colour helps disguise my lack of painting ability when the unit is viewed as a whole, particularly since the zeltbahns already diminish unit colour cohesion.

No problem, if you like it your way.

>I'll try and clean up but the amount of hours I put into that unit of 10 already bodes poorly for the rest of my army.

Take your time. It will get easier the more you practice.

About the camouflage, especially those helmets would offer a great way of practicing it since they are exposed and there aren't any belts, or weapons or anything in the way. Just give it a try at one of your next minis and see if it works.

Like everyone else said, skip eyes and throw a wash on there and they will look fine. If you want to improve, try practicing tips from the tutorials with which anon kindly provided you on a test fig that you don't really care about, an older figure, something broken or that you just found lying around, some varieties of "army men" are even paintable.

Still, blocking in basecoat colours neatly is half the battle. Also thin paints, like that other guys said, you're better off with the first coat being too thin than too thick because adding more paint is easier than removing too much paint

Don't base your assumptions on Airfix figures from the seventies. Now there are a god number of pretty good manufacturers who do lot better stuff than your average metal manufacturer in 28mm (Crusader, Artizan, and all the bobblyhead-telefonpole gunners) - and Airfix does some nice figures, their type 2s are usually better.

Have a couple hundred medievals too, yes. I base them separately for various reasons. Lion Rampant (blech), WAB, any other random medieval skirmishes...if you're unsure, do the separate basing. If you want to multibase, 4 infantry for a 40mm square, 2 cavalry for a 50mm square.

Another playtest of aces vs average spam.

Last game the aces cleaned up, downing 8 allied aircraft between them, and only taking minor damage or wounds. The game lasted 12 turns.

This game an allied two-seater managed to roll 6's with its MG attack from the rear, and although the ace did an evasive snap roll, his aircraft burst into flames and he was killed.

The other ace FAILED his evasion (rolled double 1s on 2d6) as an average fighter lined him up, and was shot down also. Both aces killed by turn 3.

This game really can go either way.

There's something peculiarly distinctive about the North African campaign in WW2. Don Featherstone - who drove a Crusader in the RTR during the whole thing - called it the "Gentleman's War", and in a slightly romanticized way he was right. There were no hordes of civilians being massacred or cities getting leveled; it was two forces of clean-limbed professional warriors going at it in a sandbox. British Hussar and Yeomanry officers went into battle with silk scarves and gloves; their German counterparts were decidedly non-Prussian in style and attitude. Both sides respected each other. In one example the New Zealand Division and the 90th Light Infantry Division banged heads repeatedly for two years, and at the end in Tunisia the 90th insisted on surrendering personally to the New Zealanders in recognition of this. The Afrikakorps and the 8th Army became legends; everyone's heard of Rommel and the Desert Rats. The propaganda services of both sides probably had a lot to do with the mythologization; but I think this view of it as the "gentleman's war" made it easier for people to remember as opposed to less glamorous campaigns.

This isn't to say it was a game of cricket; the commonplace brutality of war still dominated and a lot of shit things happened. It's just not as much of a moral mess as Russia or the Pacific was.

Two questions from someone that doesn't/hasn't played any historical war games.

1) Are most figures fielded meant to represent a single soldier, or like 100? Most historical engagements were huge, so I doubt (although I could be wrong!) that many historical war games go for the 1 model = 1 guy depiction.

2) How lethal do they depict infantry? Is it basically "you got hit, so you died", or do they have damage ratings per weapon/Wounds per model like Warhammer?

Sorry if historical wargames is so broad of a genre that these questions might not apply; I was just curious if there was a ballpark answer for "most" historical wargames.
>>
>>44216192
>1
Depends massively on the scale of the battle you're representing, the miniature scale you use and the game system you're using.
Classical army battles could be especially huge, but something like the Viking raids (as in SAGA) is easily represented 1:1.
Then you also have hex-and-counter stuff, where you don't have any miniatures at all and a counter could represent anything from a single heavy weapon (without crew) to a full division of tanks including supporting vehicles, guns and infantry depending on the game in question.

>2
Again, depends massively on the game system and the era it depicts.
Most games with firearms in more modern settings also have mechanics to represent the secondary weapons effects, like pinning troops in place.

Personally, I mostly play 15mm WW2 (expanding into 15mm Cold War) and dabble in smaller-scale air combat (1/144 for WW2 and 1/350 for moderns), which both allow for 1:1 representation of troops by models, although typically with a sliding ground scale.
In most of those games, the scale isn't linear; as ranges get longer, they represent an ever longer range. That allows you to kind of "zoom in" on close-range actions or maneuvering.
>>
>>44216192
>>44216381
Continuing, I'll give you the answers for Flames of War, my main historical wargame, for some reference.
It's WW2 in 15mm (1:100) scale, for (reinforced) company-level fights.

>1
In FoW, each models represents a single soldier or vehicles, but infantry fireteams and heavy weapon crews are mounted together on bases and operate as single entities; if such a team is destroyed, it might represent that at least some of them are killed or injured, with the rest no longer able to fight because of practical or psychological reasons.

Many other historical wargames that model battles at larger scales also use bases with multiple infantry models to represent groups of troops. The representation there can be very different depending on the game system.

>2
In FoW, infantry teams get a 3+ save against most ranged weapons fire when hit, since a scattered burst of bullets or a single (small) HE shell (which is what a single ranged shot represents) isn't actually that likely to instantly take out a fireteam of 2-5 soldiers. If they're in bulletproof cover (say, a stone building or foxholes), the shooter also needs to roll a firepower test (3+ for the main guns on most medium tanks, 6+ for basic rifles/MGs) to actually destroy the team.
Infantry are actually pretty hard to remove from a position, especially with solid cover.
Unless, that is, you bring up the really big guns (heavy howitzers and the like), use flame-throwers or actually storm their position with hand grenades and close-quarters fighting. Which are the things infantry in FoW don't get any saves against.

With tanks, FoW uses a different system: armour rating (front/side/top) + a d6 roll vs the AT rating of the enemy weapon. If you fail the save, the attacker rolls firepower to destroy/disable the vehicle.

In both cases, that's all after a to-hit roll based on the skill of the target (representing use of cover, smoke dischargers etc) modified by terrain and the like.

> What's a good way to get into tabletop wargaming with a pretty small budget?

Skirmish games or papercraft. Also print-and-play hex and chits.

> Also, digital wargaming programs?

ZunTsu, VASSAL. There's quite a few historical vidya that are basically adapted tabletop games too.
>>
>>44217456
>>44217424
Also I forgot, if you want to do minis but not skirmish, smaller scales can be really cheap.

For example, Pendraken will give you 30 10mm Napoleonic line infantry for 4.50 Britbucks. 1/72 plastics also tend to be dirt cheap.
>>
>>44217424
WW2 models are pretty cheap. 1/72 is a decent scale for wargames, and widely available. you can pick up a couple of boxes of infantry and a tank or two for very cheap. The infantry especially are cheap.

Digital wargames, I'd probably go for wargame-like vidya: Men of War, the Total War series (Medieval II is one of my favorites), Wargame Airland Battle, Distant Guns, etc.

>>44216192
Each system treats this differently, but for the WW2 game we play, infantry work in bases, with about 4 or 5 miniatures on each base. A base represents about 12 men (with 2 bases making up a platoon)

When attacking infantry, you roll a D6 for each weapon, be it a machine gun, or a tanks cannon, or an artillery shell, etc.
On a 1-3 nothing happens, on a 4-6 the infantry base takes 50% casualties (another result like this and the unit is wiped out), and on a 7, the base is wiped out.

This basic damage table is modified in certain ways: infantry taking cover are -1 to damage, Heavy cover like bunkers gives -2 to damage. High explosive gives +1 damage, Large caliber cannons (above 100m) give a further +1. Air strikes are +2 (and ignore cover), etc.

This way you only ever have to roll 1 dice when attacking an infantry base, and a good roll with a decent weapon can wipe them out 1 hit.
It makes infantry fragile, but extremely hard to get out of cover without good weaponry. Infantry that have gone to ground inside a building would be -2 to damage, meaning you need to roll a 6 to cause any damage. Ideally you want some high explosive or indirect weapons that ignore cover to get infantry out of a building.

Thats just our system (Ostfront), there's many different ways to handle this.

Good old Herb! I wonder whatever happened to his collection; a mess of classic Britains 54mm of all kinds, and whatever those toy cannons he had were. There's a modern version of the Little Wars/Floor Games rules that came out recently, some ex-British Army chaplain or something was revising and relaunching them, but I can't remember the name. Anyway, we've got the originals in our Victorian folder if you're interested.

Story is standard WW2 stuff, nothing amazing but there's a focus on her life and career I found interesting. Accuracy is pretty good bar the obligatory invented sniper duel, probably the dumbest part of the movie. I definitely recommend it but the subtitles are utter shit, so keep that in mind. Has all those standards of modern Russian movies like the music-video-montage scenes and some very average CGI. The lead is a qt and does a superb job.

Got the 3 resin tanks (Bt-7, Luchs and Chi-Ha) and some sprues from warlord i mentioned a couple of times already.

I also ordered a Squad of HJ as well as a Mortar and anti-tank troops from Greatescapegames. I doubt they will reach be before new year though.

I kinda want to order some books for Bolt Action (only have the basic rules), but i know they had some events last year where you could get the books cheaper or get a box of minis for free when ordering a book so maybe i will wait with that.

Then there is my desire to own a decent airbrush, but i still can't decide on what to get or how much i want to spend on it so i probably end up not buying one (again).

>What's a good way to get into tabletop wargaming with a pretty small budget?

How small is your "small budged"? For a skirmish game like SAGA you would need the rules You should be able to get them as Pdf somewhere around /tg/ if you want to save money and maybe one box of plastic miniatures to have the absolute essentials to play. That should cost you around $50.

For Bolt Action (battles are bit bigger than a real skirmish game) you need rules, your army book and for a small force (500-750) maybe 1 box of infantry and maybe one or two blisters with support weapons like heavy machine guns or a mortar (not necessarily though). The minis alone will cost around $30-40.

But don't spend your entire budget on miniatures since you need tools and paint as well. I suggest to split your budget 50:50 to cover both sides.
Plastic glue, super glue, primer, s basic paint set, wash(es), basing mats (sand, white glue), static grass, a hobby knife, a side cutter and brushes will cost you some money as well.

You can get away with doing it on Tabletop Simulator, too, especially for minis wargaming where having a 3d environment is often important.

That helps with the budget thing, too, since the program is like 20 bucks and there's tons of models on the workshop for free (mostly 40k and ww2 tanks at the moment, but expanding pretty regularly and a little proxying ain't too bad).

There are two old tricks for painting soft plastic figures:
After washing the models to get rid of any mould release agents, as you would for resin (except by a couple of insane companies that don't use any and produce high quality stuff, Ainsty castings is one of those) and doing the standard cleaning up of mould lines (use a knife rather than a file):

Paint them with varnish before undercoating with primer.
or
Paint them with PVA glue before undercoating with primer.

Specifically primer and not just spraypaint.

The technique has been in use for pretty much as long as Airfix has existed.

Going colonial. Picked up a hardcopy of Soldier's Companion, which seems like a neat set of rules from the PDF - it's Space: 1889, but designed as a colonial game with VSF added.

Planning on putting together a unit (20 figs, probably doing 24 to appease my autism and make it TSATF-compatible, I think someone around here plays that) of brits, one of allied troops, and 3 units worth of some opponent or other.

then a unit of martian askaris

But I'm starting with the brits. Red shirts, sun helmets, and no bloody kilts.

One thing I like about the way it's set up at least on mars is that if there were three or four battalions around and they wanted to assemble a column to go do something somewhere, they'd grab companies from different units. Feels a bit like the good old days of 2e 40K, where an Imperial Guard army would have a squad of catachans, a squad of valhallans, a cadian heavy weapons squad and some rough riders from planet hun. Some proper stout english lads, a bunch of scots, a company from the colonial regiment, and a couple of companies of natives from wherever the fuck. on mars but you know, on earth too

So, what basing methods do you prefer for the units in your modern games?

For example WW2 or modern, I usually see people basing things individually in FoW for instance, and I don't know if it's the best. I don't know if it actually accomplishes something, or if it's just to remove casualties, which you could even just count as hitpoints for the whole 'element' or base.

I don't know if anyone's familiar with Impetus, but that game uses large bases that represent units, and they lose fighting strength as they have casualties, but you don't actually remove anything.

Do you think this could be done in modern wargames? Any examples?

I'm thinking, 40K popularized that stuff with lots of dudes based individually, and then FoW copied it
>>
>>44229365
Are these Front Rank, or old Bretonnian knights?

For ancients, Samurai and Napoleonics I got with my usual multibasing - 4 infantry to a 40mm square, or two cavalry for a 50mm square, with 2-2 half-bases per unit so I can put the command base in the middle of the first rank. For European medieval (Crusades and HYW) separate basing (20mm square for inf, 25x50 for cav), for WW1, WW2, Vietnam and modern 20mm round washers for infantry, random for support weps and other similar stuff.

I'm not familiar with Impetus, started to read multiple times, but never got anywhere with it.

>I'm thinking, 40K popularized that stuff with lots of dudes based individually, and then FoW copied it

FoW doesn't base dudes individually.

For something like you described, check out Mantic's Warpath, it can be easily modded for other modern games.
>>

1p (20mm-ish) or 2p (25mm-ish) coins, depending on scale.

For 6mm, infantry on 1p coins with 4 miniatures to a base, vehicles on 2ps.
Individual bases for anything at 15mm and above, I go to 6mm or 10mm for anything representing more than 1 person per miniature.

I've noticed units don't tend to get degraded so much in modern warfare games as obliterated. They're either effective at fighting, suppressed (possibly with casualties) or gone; fled, dead or both. But then the way stuff works, there's not really much call for disrupted formations in massed units of infantry when everyone is spread out.

40k only really popularised lots of individually based infantry because they also pushed for 28mm, and selling a lot of models. Hell, Warhammer literally started out as a way to sell people more fantasy miniatures at a time than they were buying for their RPG games.

The system of using individually based models at 28mm for modern combat though is pretty much the best way to do it if using that size of model. There's a lot of game design that goes into how units not only operate and interact with the battlefield, but are perceived by the players. And multiple-basing in this instance is bad design. And if the game is calling for so many models on the table that you need multiple models per base or movement trays to push them about, that's bad because it is mismatching scale of miniatures to battle. And if there is no requirement to disperse units for realistic reasons and they end up moving around as tight blobs ala bolt action, that's just bad design for failing at a basic part of the simulation of reality that the game is trying to represent.

Those are actually really good points in favor of individual basing for modern and/or sci fi and futuristic games. That way the miniatures and units can work well in cover.

Now, there are two different ways of doing that, one is Warmahordes for example, where any dude in the unit can do whatever he wants, and the other is Bolt Action/WH4k (thanks guys, I just brainfarted and confused both games), in which all the unit does the same.

Which do you think it's the most realistic for a modern warfare game?

I believe there could be some stuff like support heavy guns which do something differently (for example, cover the riflemen as they advance), but the unit itself should all do the same stuff.
>>
>>44233739
It's down to how abstract you like your games. If four dudes are on a base, and explain how one does this, the other does that, and ta-da, then I guess it's fine. Like I said, check out Warpath, it could help (especially how it's based on modern warfare apparently with smaller teams of 5 men that can be expanded by two units joining).

The most realistic option for modern games, with the parameters of 28mm figures and a battle size of around an expanded platoon at most, is to allow for individuals within a unit to act on their own but with various mechanisms in place to keep units together; if only for morale purposes.
Typically this is via some sort of radius around the unit's commander, even if you are accounting for universal radio communication, within which it's easier to get get individuals to do things, even if it's just recover from being suppressed. Highly trained and experienced the combatants are can increase this basic operating distance to show how better quality troops are more capable of fighting in a manner that is appropriate.

I'd also argue for use of template weapons, as this tends to create more realistic assessment of how troops are spread out.
Or at least in my experience, after the first grenade manages to frag/pin half a squad that was bunched up behind a single short hedge, people tend to start spreading out and being far more concerned about not getting bunched up.

But overall, I think that more realistic play comes best when the game mechanics don't force things arbitrarily, but encourage players to try and us/compose their force more realistically. It'd be easy to say, take Bolt Action's system (which doesn't use template weapons and troops tend to form blobs or ranks even) and then add a rule saying that troops if not in cover should remain X inches apart from the next guy so the unit doesn't get taken apart by a single HE round, or you can just give explosive weapons templates and let that do the work without having to jam in extra rules to try and improve at least that aspect of it as a simulation.

Side note: how BA operates like that makes me think that the all-but-confirmed Vietnam version incoming is a really bad idea.
>>
>>44235205
Interesting.

How about having a rule that makes rookies group together when they're under fire? That could make them vulnerable to template weapons, and would make elite troops much more resilient to that kind of stuff.

And it's related to what veterans tell about rookies, that they just group together when under stress
>>
>>44235568
Rather than make them, have the command radius be smaller and require additional people near a model that is pinned to un-pin it.
Or even better than that: have it so that any unit can gain a bonus to recover from a helpful buddy model, but make it so that rookie units have a low chance to recover on their own so require every bonus they can get to recover from being pinned. Which will far more naturally lead to the same effect without adding in special-case rules that only apply to rookie units.

Do you think it's a good idea to have medieval/ancient games a la Saga or Lion Rampant, with units of troops being individually based, or do you prefer the approach of FoG, DBA, DBM and all that, based in different elements or even just a base for the whole unit?

For modern it feels better, but for ancients, having them based individually just makes it look like there's so little troops.

Ancient times have a feeling of huge armies fighting against each other, but why is that? Was there no important skirmishing? Or is it just not recorded?

i'd love a skirmish game about ancient times
>>
>>44245793
>i'd love a skirmish game about ancient times
Use a medieval game with appropriate equipment and troop types. I'd say you can use WAB with the WHFB skirmish rules for 6th ed without any problem.
>>
>>44245793
> Was there no important skirmishing? Or is it just not recorded?

Tons, it's just tiny skirmishes of a few dozen men are never going to be as historically significant as pitched battles.

Ambushes, raids, scouting parties clashing have all happened for basically as long as there has been war.
>>
>>44241065
They'd probably work just fine. It is alt-history, after all.

There are some designer's notes for the wargame here: http://www.heliograph.com/space1889/scdesignnotes.html

There's a not-entirely-shit scan floating around, a better one available from Wargame Vault, and their print-on-demand copy is reasonably priced and well-printed.

As for the setting, it's sort-of proto-steampunk, _very_ much more on the proto- side than the steampunk side. Planetary romance with armies, not so much cogfucking, and anyone who whacked a few cogs on the side of their hat and spray-painted it brass would be laughed out of the room.

Why not both?

For battle games, I prefer the latter, but multiple large bases per unit can be nice for formations. I do like a good skirmish though, whether it's a dozen dudes or a hundred in a larger skirmish a la Saga, Lion "Not As Bad As /hwg/ Says" Rampant, Rules According to Ral, or whatever.

The problem with skirmish rules (traditional skirmishes I mean, every man for himself) is that they usually lack complexity.

And also the problem with many of these large skirmish games, like Lion Rampant, is that casualties tend to be pretty high, compared with the amount of models there are in game, so battles are extremely fast

>'d love a skirmish game about ancient times

The dacian wars hail caesar supplement has rules for skirmish battles.

Also seconded op....which is why i'm psyched about Mark Lathams Broken Legions it's based off his old rules for warhammer the old west but for ancients but with supernatural elements, germans get a werewolf and dacians get a vampire for example.

Is that for that "CANZAC" thing we've (i'm a toon) heard whispers about?
>>
>>44248838
Nah, it's a full on permanent transfer. I'd no longer be employed by the CAF. I'd be NZDF. Canada and New Zealand are doing a temporary exchange of NCMs of certain trades (Mostly technician-types) next year though.

Were all Roman shields red? Did they change them during civil wars? or were they a variety of colours?
>>
>>44252106
Variety of colours, at least during the republic. Not sure about imperial romans though

Romans are credited with a lot more 'uniformity' than they actually had

dude I'm coming to uni next year in dunedin, whats the RPG/wargammign scene like?
>>
>>44252106

For republican romans, I saw a guy at a blog paint them with random tunics within each unit (faded red, green, yellow, blue or offwhite "undyed") and then a different unified shield colour for each "Legion" (I.e 1x Velites, 2x hastati, 2x principes, 1x triarii), blue Legion, red Legion, yellow Legion, etc.

This is what I plan to do when I start my republican Roman Army.

I've always seen late republican/caesarian and imperial romans done with red uniforms/shields for Legionaries, purple for praetorians and blue for auxiliaries, though

>The problem with skirmish rules (traditional skirmishes I mean, every man for himself) is that they usually lack complexity.
Depends on the rules, and large skirmish games usually have formations.

Faster, bloodier games are nice sometimes. There's a place for many different types of wargame, even the "move 6", march 9", roll xd6 by gun type to shoot, 6s kill" style.

Well crikey. Linton seems like the place to be; a bunch of squaddies recently got hospitalized (then dismissed) after doing a bad batch of synthetic drugs. Party on dudes! Also you will find a local gaming scene among the Massey Uni students, I'm sure. There is a local group called "Manawatu Duellists".

Burnham is of course in the South Island and hence a few inches left of Satan's asshole. They send the Limited Service Volunteers (i.e. kids who need a kick up the backside) there. These days I think everyone there spends a lot of time working on earthquake recovery. On the other hand Christchurch has a solid wargaming scene; the local wargaming club been around for years, I have a flyer from 20 years ago and they're still at the same address. Good luck to you!

I have not one, but two cats.

One of them just enjoys destroying everything she sees, the other just enjoys headbutting things.

Any recommendations on 20mm WW2?

I'm looking for affordable and at least decent quality. Mostly because shipping is probably going to be pretty expensive and I haven't painted anything in about 6 years so it's probably going to look like crap anyway, I'd rather not waste nice ones.

Plastic Soldier Company and Battlefield/Blitz look ok so far. Do any brands in particular mix well together or are they so small it is difficult to tell the difference?

I'm probably going to paint up a small force of Russians and Germans to play fivecore and some infantry skirmish games with some friends in an attempt to get them into it.
>>
>>44261093
PSC looks bloody stiff and flat. Italeri's newer ranges are good (Winter Russians, Germans and Americans).

Yep plastic soldier company do 3 packs of T-34s Excellent and quick build / snap together. Very cool kits. Italieri also do double kits of most tanks in the war, also very quick assemble and pretty good price.

For this scale you can easily mix and match 1/72 and 1/76 without too much issue. Only if the tanks are right next to each other will you notice the difference.

most of the T-34s you see in the front are plastic soldier. The infantry are all 1/72 airfix. The IS-2s and ISUs are the double pack italieri kits. The T-70 is actually a Flames of War Panzer IV! Rather hard to find light vehicles and light tanks where I live (I haven't tried ordering any online though, and probably is doable)

>And also the problem
> so battles are extremely fast

That can be a good thing as well. While i like to have hour-long games myself, thats not for everybody.
>>
>>44261592
>hour-long games
Heh. One Hour Wargames is a good book! The rules are very basic and... well, over-simplified at times, but they're still fun with or without a few tweaks. The book _does_ come with a load of generic scenarios though, readily adaptable to other games. Well worth the price, although not quite the best wargaming book I bought in 2015.
>>
How good are the Hail Caesar! rules? I imagine the battles to be rather small considering the scale. Is it more an ancient skirimish game?
>>
>>44261624
It's a battle game, not skirmish. The rules are pretty good - it's an evolution of Warmaster/Black Powder. Why would you say battles would be small?

Lots of people play it in different scales, and it works just fine. Others play it in 28mm, and the creators play it in 28mm with thousands of figures and room-sized tables because they're rich fuckers.
>>
>>44261860
>Why would you say battles would be small?

Because:
>the creators play it in 28mm with thousands of figures and room-sized tables because they're rich fuckers.

Thats what i don't have, so the average army of the average player is fairly small i suppose.
>>
>>44261891
Most people don't do that and still get a satisfyingly large game. It feels more like a big battle than warhammer, and it's a hell of a lot more fun than field of glory.

I guess i have to read the pdf
