I've actually done this in a SAVAGE world game. Its really pretty simple.

They consume flesh and bone and convert it to a corresponding synthetic material. Bone is consumed and turned into a super-dense carbon nanotube structure, the brain made into a self replicating and repairing processing unit and the flesh is a sort of nanobot swarm.

Robot kits that retrofit corpses. Newly animated bodies go around collecting dead bodies and retrofitting them. Eventually go about making corpses.

None of this "a bit turns you into one" cliche. They drag bodies off to little impromptu zombie factories. When their populations start getting bug they differentiate and make specialised units for building, collecting, defending, and leadership.

Zombies link to each other wirelessly but have limited range and must build network bridges to extend the network. Bridges are made of giant piles of wired together brains.

That could legitimately be pretty scary, if a whole mob of them were doing it like some kind of unearthly war-cry. Vary up the volume more, and in some other sound-effects like screaming and ambience and you could really get someone's heart going off that.

Phyrexia is one of the best examples of biomechanical horror. It has all the elements one could need, body horror, disfigurement, uncanny valley, zombies, general gore, mechanical monstrosities, even an infection that replaces the inferior flesh with Phyrexianized metal corruption, and taints the mind and soul with the Glory of Phyrexia.

If I ever manage to do that Traveller campaign I've been hoping to do, robot zombies are totally going in.

I'll probably do them up as something like Invinicible's Reanimen, cyborg Frankenstein monsters with freakish strength, who have a basic intelligence but are remotely controlled.

Nanomachines that are injected into your bloodstream and you can control at will. Naturally the self replicating machines fuck the users brain up, resulting in a human composed mostly of machine. The form is created by the human's subconscious desires (resulting in special infected) and the nanomachines spread from victim to victim via bite.

It's really pretty simple.
Most Liches are wizards. Wizards are hyper-intelligent. Some of these intelligent people love automation, and dislike messy towers. Zombies tend to leave bits of flesh and limbs lying around, and they're not really very quick or smart. Skeletons just aren't strong enough.

Clockwork soldiers, though, those are stronger, faster, more efficient. What's more, you don't have to imbue each one of them with a soul or anything. No real magic required. All you have to do is set up the factory, and then set a handful of them to maintain your metal supply. So much easier.

Well that depends on what you mean by robo zombie. If you mean an average robot that has become undead, well that's just fucking stupid and doesn't make sense. Constructs don't turn into undead since they lack living flesh. They can be become golems, which acts as a form of undeath for them, though it is nothing like undeath. If you're talking about a zombie with cybernetics, well that's just much easier to do.

For example, pic related. Its the Rust-Risen, zombies with alien tech from an ancient crashed spaceship upon the fantasy world of Golarion. They function as slightly smarter zombies with an obsession for tech and eventually turning their master into one of them. Think fantasy borg without the hivemind.

As for robot golems, that's another thing found on Golarion. Those are basically broken robots that have been reanimated with elemental spirits to do very basic activities. Ultrons first appearence but without the intelligence and powered by magic instead.

Of course there is the other artificial humanoids, the androids. These are so close to being biological in their makeup, though made of artificial substances, that they can be converted into undead. Incidentally they also possess actual souls, much like regular people. More than likely look like rotting humans with fiber optics and odd looking flesh.

Nanomachines that are injected by well meaning medics and instructed to preserve life.

This is a bit morbid but you know how you're supposed to switch someone's pacemaker off when they're dying otherwise it just keeps painfully zapping their heart trying to start it because pacemakers cannot into context? Do the same with the nanites. They're fine all through someone's life but when they start to die the nanites shore up more and more of them with artificial nerves and tissue. This is all well and good until they die and the nanites can't fix the brain because it's too complex so you're left with a brainless instinctual creature whose nanites simply won't allow to die. If you cut a limb off it's just a mess of blood and artificial material, the blood rapidly cutting off as the nanites repair the leak. They can reattach parts of themselves, if left long enough they'll regrow their missing parts and they'll eat damn near anything to get the raw materials they need. They may even sport adaptations like mouths containing cutting saws and such to make it easier for the nanites to get the materials they need to continue their good work.

Aka Me Industries added a bit of code to their MkXI NanoMeds designed the form internal resuply nodes within the marrow of the joints of a recipient. This was due to the efficiency and market acceptance of the previous generation of NanoMeds and would cut down on supply costs for recipients of the treatment for subsequent injuries with simple firmware updates rather then actual NanoMed injections. They didn't expect for the construction feature to interfere with the Bone Repair subroutines resulting in after a year of minimal ware on the body, ie: no injuries greater then superficial tissue damage, the MedBots continued to construct more restock and resupply nodes in the skeletal structure of the patient.

Fist cases were discovered by the sudden onset of severe anemia. sadly these cases were mostly treated with an application of NanoMeds or a Firmware update. the fist deaths occurred due to saturation of the bone marrow with MedBots and Support structures and the leaching of nearly all heavy metals in the body. sadly these first cases were the roll out samples, and thus entire stations and long haul shipping vessel employees succumbed almost simultaneously. Secondary waves of death toll spread the alarm, the cause was not yet connected to NanoMeds and were treated with blood transfusions and mineral supplements to stave off the effects.

The epidemic swelled and the Commonwealth and several Aka Me Medical(tm) Carriers were devoted to fighting the the illness whatever it was. Application of further doses of NanoMed resulted in Increased rate of decay of health and ultimately the medical professionals were baffled by the cause of the sickness.

After a year of deaths and the spread of the illness to all corners of human space an action was put into effect by Aka Me Industries to add a Firmware update that would use the NanoMeds, Now version MkXIII, that would use the bodies natural functions to direct a sick or wounded individual bodily in the case of sever weakness or unconsciousness as a way to aid those suffering from the weakening caused by the sever anemia. and utilized a worm program to more quickly disseminate the update throughout known space.

The Unintended result was for all Unconscious or critically ill individuals upon receipt of the update through WiFi-networks not currently in a designated medical facility immediately stood and proceeded in an orderly fashion to the nearest medical facility. This included every body of the recently deceased in morgues and research facilities and battle fields and execution chambers. The reaction to these events were violent.

The NanoMeds Receiver/Transmitters pinged the networks that their patients were receiving further harm in the form of bodily attack by armed persons. As a result the Aka Me Medical(tm) Computer system updated the Worm with basic defensive capabilities borrowed from the Aka Me Military(tm) Computer system. The Action was logged and pinged to Aka Me HQ on Europa.

The lengthy process of extracting the NanoMeds from those already in medical facilities or those not yet incapacitated by the weakness brought on by the over abundance of nanites in their system. Sadly the Military software bundle came coupled with adaptive ECM that made removing the NanoMeds from afflicted individuals who had died or fallen unconscious was nearly impossible especially once in a "Defensive Posture."

To this day those long haul freighters, ships gone adrift due to personnel succumbing to the outbreak and off map stations such as pirate bases or 'Black' sites are still infested with the shambling dead.

Luckily NanoMed MkXV was released to repair the damage done and protect Aka Me Ind. investors from the embarrassment and stock hit of anyone ever needing to know the true cause of the epidemic that nearly brought humanity to its knees. All they needed to know was NanoMed A true Cure All once and For All.

Why bother cutting off so much of the superhuman's bodies to put metal on them? They're already stronger than any normal human. If anything it should be the normal cyberzombies that look like horrible robot crab monsters and shit while the cyborg superheros look like the normally do but with a costume change.
