It is 40 years since Operation Entebbe, a successful counter-terrorist hostage-rescue mission carried out by commandos of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at Entebbe Airport in Uganda.

A week earlier on 27 June, an Air France plane with 248 passengers had been hijacked by two members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – External Operations (PFLP-EO) under orders of Wadie Haddad and two members of the German Revolutionary Cells. The hijackers had the stated objective to free 40 Palestinian and affiliated militants imprisoned in Israel and 13 prisoners in four other countries in exchange for the hostages. The flight, which had originated in Tel Aviv with the destination of Paris, was diverted after a stopover in Athens via Benghazi to Entebbe, the main airport of Uganda. The Ugandan government supported the hijackers, and dictator Idi Amin personally welcomed them. After moving all hostages from the aircraft to a disused airport building, the hijackers separated all Israelis and several non-Israeli Jews from the larger group and forced them into a separate room. Over the following two days, 148 non-Israeli hostages were released and flown out to Paris. 94, mainly Israeli, passengers along with the 12-member Air France crew, remained as hostages and were threatened with death.

The IDF acted on information provided by the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. The hijackers threatened to kill the hostages if their prisoner release demands were not met. This threat led to the planning of the rescue operation. These plans included preparation for armed resistance from Ugandan military troops. Israeli firms were involved in building projects in Africa during the '60s and '70s and while preparing the raid the IDF erected a partial replica of the airport terminal with the assistance of civilians who had helped build the original.

The operation took place at night. Israeli transport planes carried 100 commandos over 2,500 miles (4,000 km) to Uganda for the rescue operation. After a week of planning, the raid itself lasted 90 minutes. 102 hostages were rescued. Five Israeli commandos were wounded and one, the unit commander, Lt. Col. Yonatan Netanyahu, was killed. All 7 of the hijackers, three of the hostages and 45 Ugandan soldiers were killed, and 30 Soviet-built MiG-17s and MiG-21s of Uganda's air force were destroyed. Kenyan sources supported Israel, and in the aftermath of the operation Idi Amin issued orders to retaliate and slaughter several hundred Kenyans present in Uganda.

Operation Entebbe, which had the military codename Operation Thunderbolt, is sometimes referred to retroactively as Operation Jonathan in memory of the unit's leader, Yonatan Netanyahu. He was the older brother of Benjamin Netanyahu, the current Prime Minister of Israel. In the ensuing years, Muki Betser (2-in-C on the raid) and the Netanyahu brothers (all Sayeret Matkal veterans), argued in increasingly public forums about who was to blame for the unexpected early firefight that caused Yonatan's death and partial loss of tactical surprise.

As a result of the operation, the United States military would begin the development of Delta Force. In a letter dated 13 July 1976, the Supreme Commander's Staff of the Imperial Iranian Armed Forces praised the Israeli commandos for the mission and extended condolences for "the loss and martyrdom" of Netanyahu.

This raid is a daring and detailed affair that would be perfect for the tabletop. So many variables are in play and results could be different every time.

Arab-Israeli Air Wars 1947-82 (Osprey Combat Aircraft 23)

When the UN called for the end of the British mandate and the partition of Palestine into two independent states, the RAF found itself under attack from both sides. Tracing the development of hostilities in the Middle East, this book covers the period from the establishment of the first proper Israeli Air Force in 1948 to the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. Israel's War of Independence against its Arab neighbours, the inevitable 'round two', the Suez Crisis of 1956, the Six Day War of 1967, the Yom Kippur wars of 1973 and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 are all detailed in this fascinating chronicle of war in the Middle East.

Playtesting my Vietnam game, got a big A1 map printed and laminated today.

US had a huge build up of forces in the first 4 turns (about 8 years of time in-game), but even outnumbered, the NVA and VC were able to inflict heavy casualties. Both sides have lost about 17,000 casualties at this point, and US forces are verging on having low morale.

The VC attempted to push into saigon, but were beaten back by shit tons of motorized infantry and artillery, their camouflaged infantry getting pinned down.

NVA forces in the north were able to outnumber 2:1 and annihilate a unit of Air Cavalry, and forces from both sides converged in a large battle around Da Nang and Hue.

The VC currently holds the city of Kontum although US forces are surrounding the city.

Due to some altercations with Civilians, the US lost some war support, and for the next 4 turns the war support is as follows:

VC/NVA: Build up of forces: D6+2 extra units per turn

US/SVA: Minimal unit on the ground: D6 - 1 extra units per turn.

So the US will be on the back foot for the next 4 turns, but they already have quite a few men on the ground. Losses are pretty even so the game seems pretty balanced at the moment... I definitely added a few things and clarified a few rules to far. Camouflaged infantry got nerfed a bit, same with tunneled infantry. Also I've introduced LRRPs for the US, so they can recon enemy forces.

The VC forces assault Saigon retreat back up the ho chi minh trail, in the face of massive US resistance.

US Forces besieging Kon Tum are able to completely annihilate (or capture) the VC and NVA unit there, while in the north VC units make the most of having much more reinforcements, deploying 7 new units and immediately engaging the outnumbered US and SVA forces in Hue.

Faction Overview, Start of Turn 7:
>VC/NVA:
26,000 Casualties so far
War Support: Build up for major offensive: 2D6 extra units per turn
Morale: Average, verging on High

>US/SVA:
20,400 Casualties so far
Current War Support: Average Operations: D6 extra units per turn.

I can't speak from personal experience, but I do know it's become the system of choice for a lot of people running Very British Civil War games, and they usually play "pick-up" battles where force sizes are determined based on campaign play and the nature of the battle. But given how straightforward it is you could easily create a points system of your own and include it.

First minis pretty much done aside from some cleanup related to the sides of the bases and sealing.

I'm pretty happy with the US woodland and Iranian desert DPM camo turned out, as well as the whites. I'm also pretty happy with the SKS guy in general.

Due to the shit lighting I used the black wash I did is not showing up as well and makes the minis appear noticeably brighter. I'm not particularly happy with the black wash which I think is mostly down to me fucking it up. Not very happy with the gunmetal (Black > Gunmetal > Desert Sand Wash > Black Wash) as it's too metallic so I think I should throw another thin layer of black after gunmetal in the future. There's a fuckoff huge moldline on woodland vest guy that I somehow missed. I feel like some paint is on too thick, particularly the 2nd guys right hand.

no, thats the sniper version of the mosin, you can tell by the different bolt and the way the scope is setup, although the scope is probably a more modern version than what originally came on that rifle.

Whether the russians still issue them or they found it on a rebel is beyond me though. They still use the ammo for it and I'm sure there's still some kicking around in a warehouse so I wouldnt be surprised to see it issued, but then again everyone has the damn things. Hell they go for under $500 in the states all the time with that exact set up

I played 2 games when the starter boxes arrived at my FLGS a week and a half ago.

Both were 2 M4A4 Shermans (the British ones) vs 2 StuG IIIGs.
First one without any upgrades, the second one with 10 points of upgrades each.

It plays nice and quickly, with simple rules that seem to make both speeding around for close quarters and sitting at range to snipe worthwhile.
Simple, but quite a bit of fun.
I certainly plan to play it more, at least as a filler game between games of Flames of War or when I have a little spare time at my FLGS.

Bonus feature: the core set comes with stat cards for all tanks in the first wave and most upgrade cards. Only nation-specific crewmembers aren't in there.
That makes it fairly easy to also use spare models from other sources (Battlefront, Plastic Soldier Company) to get more of certain tank designs cheaply.

I was never quite sure if this worked out as a net positive for wargames. Fat hands and big heads doesn't make for pretty miniatures as such.
>>
>>48118485
I think it is the only actual rule set made for tank skirmishs, if you want something less gamey mod one of those "realistic" wargames or at least one with complex rules for vehicles.
>>
>>48122902
The first heroic minis weren't made like that so it could be easier to paint?

They have their own kind of charm as they are bloody easy to paint most of the time. It makes them a bit toy soldier-y, and when it's too over the top (like Platoon 20), it looks really bad. But when it's less apparent (I'd say S and S and Elhiem are in this ball park too), they aren't bad. I don't really a fan of them in 20mm mostly because plastic minis tend to follow a more truescale approach, and they don't really mix well with each other.

>>48122949
Tanks! are made only for tanks. For a touch more realistic approach with more arms, I'd recommend Operation World War 2. Can be really fucking fiddly at times as you need to track each crew member in the tank (and they can get KO'd, other crew members can take their places, but fare worse if they are not trained and so forth), plus they can dismount, etc. etc. A really fun game if you have time as it's a long game but overall, it has basically everything.

Third from left looks a little surly, must have not had his schnapps that morning.

That M36 uniform design - the dark green Feldbluse with the light grey trousers - is my favorite version of the Wehrmacht uniform. It's classic, probably thanks to postwar movies and tv which always use it for German infantry regardless of period or location. In this case it's cool because it helps reflect that these guys are garrison/occupation troops in France, lower down the supply chain.
>>
>>48123013
Yeah operation ww2 is pretty good for that, it is even better if you use a campaign or roleplay system with only vehicles and infantry/artillery as npc.

Another useful ruleset for that is Nuts! With Fury expansion.

I think Elhiems faces are rather hit and miss as I find them to be very angular and stylized.

I did a very basic Vallejo Dark Flesh > Vallejo Flesh Wash > Vallejo Black Wash. Perhaps I should do the flesh wash and then detail in the eyes and recesses instead of black washing the face?
>>
>>48124407
just use a brown wash (like agrax earthshade from gw or army painter soft tone) instead of the black one.

>>
>>48124407
>Perhaps I should do the flesh wash and then detail in the eyes and recesses instead of black washing the face?
In my opinion a wash should rarely be the last step in any part of the model. In GENERAL I paint by Undercoat > Basecoat > Midtone, Wash > midtone again (but not covering all of the washed midtone) > Highlight

If you wanted it much simpler you can just undercoat > basecoat > wash > highlight. I'd avoid black wash for skin.

Go for 1:72 mate, FoW in 28mm sounds like a horrible idea. Could work in 1:72, tho some tanks are hard to find if you're going for the six days. Allegedly ACE will do Centurions this year.

What's your problem with 15mm if I might ask? Not my favourite scale either, but it can grow on you, plus BF would give you everything you need in the same scale, same quality over the range with rules to go with them.

I agree with you on that. FoW miniatures always look weird and clunky. Like they're "heroic" tanks or something

Problem is modern isn't really suited to 20 or 28mm. The minis are far too large for an average size table.

have you thought about going smaller instead? 10mm or smaller? it would be ideal for modern and you could have helis and aircraft represented too. The distances would be much more realistic compared to the minis on an average tabletop.

Thank god for another shipfag. We're few and far between. I've heard good things about a book called "German Naval Camouflauge" vol 1 and 2. Also in the naval MF in the OP, it helps somewhat, even if it's not on a ship for ship basis.

For Royal Navy, I've just been kind of going with "historically inspired" rather than historically accurate.

If you're a Facebook user, join a group called NAVAL BOOK REVIEW, and while you're at it join a group called Naval Wargaming as well. Lots of good shit in both of those.

I found an old WHFB Galloper Gun. Would it be suitable for Muskets and Tomahawks cannon, does it need a repaint? I've been going through all the Ospreys and there are brass ones depicted in the artist's illustrations for some, buuuut...

Is there much in 1:76 stuff out there? I imagine a lot of the old Airfix stuff is in that scale, but 1:72 is more popular. Inherited a heap of model railway stuff in OO which is 1:76.

lots. 1/76 and 1/72 are pretty much interchangeable anyway. Very close.

Would you guys be interested in a group build of some kind?

We all have until some date, say the end of the month, to build/paint something related to a theme like a fortification, something blue or casualty marker. It would need to be a very broad theme to cover most people

Victory at Sea has some ASW rules, as does Naval War, a game in development right now. Both are fast playing. If you want some way more crunchy stuff, check out General Quarters 3 in the naval section of the MF in the OP. It's got all kinds of fun optional rules like pattern running torpedoes and the like.

Sure, why not.

Stuff like fortification or markers probably work best for this since time period, game and scale won't matter.

static poses.jpg

after some experiments with the wargames factory soviets i started to like them. some of their poses are very cool and they seem to be compatible with warlord soviet bits as well.

Only the 3 guys marked in red bother me at this point. 2 of them stand upright with straight back and knees asking to be shot.. and there is basically no way to make them look dynamic. They look like army men, which is cool for 1 or 2 minis within an army but not if there are like 10 of them since they are in every sprue.
The 3rd guy (most right one i marked) has his back bent like he is throwing a grenade. (He looks really silly actually with the smg like i built him to avoid having a duplicate).

How would you build these 3 particular bodies to add some variety without making them look retarded? ;_;
>>
>>48161016

Any one of these bodies would make a good commander. Someone pointing and yelling orders, perhaps?
Maybe you need a couple of sentries for some scenario.
The guy with the twisted back could perhaps look good with a bigger gun?

Keep in mind I havent seen the sets and know next to nothing about soviet uniforms.

Saw this posted by Piers Brand on the BoW forum. Thought it might be of interest to Battlegroup fans.

> For those not on Facebook and The Guild, figured I’d post the vague news on what’s in the pipeline for the Battlegroup series…
> Firstly the vehicle cards and a large format rulebook are due for printing (a sign of an ageing hobby when the mini rulebook is too hard to read! Me included!). The rules stay the same in the large format book, but their will be a new Normandy campaign and a couple of army lists, plus all the generic scenarios, to help new players. We need more rulebooks and figured this time to do a large format one to make it easy on the eyes!
> After that it’s the first Desert War book, covering Crete and the first half of the Desert War in North Africa. This will be one of the bigger hardback books in the usual format.
> Looking longer down the dirty pipeline of production… We have two smaller campaign books in development, following the style of Wacht am Rhein released earlier this year. One is covering Budapest and one is looking at the Liberation of Holland.
> And finally at the end of the pipe is my start on stuff for an eventual book looking at the war in Burma!
> Hopefully all will come to fruition but things may change, though the cards, rulebook and Desert book are all fixed as the next wave of releases.
> I’m also still working on a Cold War version but won’t be much on that till I’m happy with it…
> I’m off to carry on recovering from the Battlegroup Overlord campaign weekend at Bovington last week!

So I'm trying to get started ACW wargaming. I bought a copy of Black Powder because I'd heard it suggested here for being a decent system. I'm new to wargaming and my eyes are glossing over a bit while reading some of the army organization bits. The way I'm interpreting things, is that the bare minimum I can use is an infantry regiment per side. I only ask because if I were to get my friends interested, I would have to provide both armies and I'm only looking to get the smallest infantry possible so I'm not out of a lot of money at the start.

Would have advised to get Longstreet instead, especially how Northstar sells it for ten pounds at the moment with the cards in the folders. What scale are you doing? 10mm is ideal for the period if you don't want to spend much.

This surprises me.
Almost every time it pops up people say "it's okay but you are probably better off with X"

You are, it's just that the Dane Axe guy has a very specific set of hands/pose.

Anyone else make use of the black tree design sale on ww2 minis? I sold 23 old plastic (painted) germans i bought a year ago for 30 euros and then ordered the following replacements:
Waffen SS Panzerschrek (2)
Wehrmacht Character Set I (4)
Wehrmacht Character Set II (4)
Wehrmacht Flamethrowers (2)
Wehrmacht HMG (Static MG34) Team
Wehrmacht Infantry with Rifles - MP44 I (4)
Wehrmacht Infantry with Rifles - MP44 II (4)
Wehrmacht Infantry with Rifles V (4)
Wehrmacht Infantry with Rifles VII (4)
Wehrmacht Infantry with Rifles VIII (4)
Wehrmacht Infantry with SMGs I - PPsH (4)
Wehrmacht with SMGs IV (4)

With shipping its 43 euros, so for 13 euros extra i get a really cool replacement force which is larger and which will look much much better. The charater sets are nice, an extra HMG will be fun when BA2 drops. And the PPSH troops also look mighty cool. Really excited to receive this shipment and get painting. Currently working on 12 LMG teams i ordered from BTD and so far i am really happy with the sculpts, especially the 2 shoulder firing teams.

Feedback welcome on the wip models! About to start painting the guns.
>>
>>48173442
Looking nice. I take a look at the BTD sales as they have some neat fantasy and medieval figs, but could never bear myself to get 28mm WW2 - 20 pounds for a single tank is a bit much for me.

I wonder what BA2 will bring tho. I wish they or someone else will make a detailed list of what's different, tho I don't think I'll buy the rulebook just because it's 2nd ed - we have basically everything for 1st ed, armies, theatre books, and some neat houserules (like +1 shots for all MGs to make them worthwhile). But it was expected sadly.
>>
>>48169835
If you're new to wargaming, or want something that is a bit more abstracted and laid back, Black Powder is a fun system.

That being said, I do not believe that the system works well for the American Civil War.
We are currently using it for Napoleonics (but are soon to switch to a 'better' system) and I can't see it being anything other that an introduction to playing ACW on tabletop.

My suggestion is to
1: Find suggestions for other rulesets, either to start out with, or switch into after a few months of BlackPowder.
2: Use 10mm or 15mm miniatures.
My group uses 15mm miniatures at a 1:20 figure to man scale (we use the orders of battle from Gettysburg to establish unit sizes. Doing this, it was about 300$ for a Federal Corp.)

Skim read the Rebellion! suppliment for the AWI. It looks like a fantastic resource for gaming the conflict.

Yup, read up on them and the idea of a well disciplined force of pagan pre-Knights is awesome.
>>
>>48174001
They're pretty fun to play. Very different than normal Vikings.

Be careful though, that huge difference can mean the first game against Jomsvikings can kick up some bad feelings.

They're not as bad as the Pagan Rus though, and the second game is a much bigger challenge for the Jomsviking side.

No probs.

In the meanwhile, progress on my British Sherman. Didn't put any specific unit's insignia on it, as I won't do it for my other vehicles, because I want them to use as generic as possible.
>>
>>48173442
A while ago i ordered some stuff from black tree design to test their sculpts. I got the PPSH germans and some sets from other time periods.
Let me say it politely: I'm not impressed.

I have read that they have 2 ranges of germans, their original "good" one and then the later additions which aren't as good.

The minis in your pic look nice.. my 4 smg-soldiers not so much.
I also got a crusader era arab command, hitler and some vikings. hitler is ok-ish (the mini obviously), the arabs are ok and the vikings are underwhelming, just like the german soldiers.

personally i won't order from them again.

Faces are hard, harder still in 28mm, and to give a racial characteristic that is recognisable (or any detail really) unless you're Perry or Meier their is going to come out looking like characature, even moreso for old hand-sculpted models.
