You are Ophelia, twisted mentat and captain of the Spacing Guild Heighliner Exuberance, on a mission to explore wild space, surveying uncharted worlds to expand the bounds of the known universe. Last thread, you were busy inspecting the engineering deck, when you were lured outside the ship by a phantom noise only you could hear. During your spacewalk, someone tried to assassinate you.

The Heighliner is decelerating toward the habitable world Tloni 3, the third planet orbiting the binary star 1195 Tloni I. The choice that needs to be made immediately is whether you’ll continue with the mission as planned, or put the shore expedition on hold while you root out the plot to assassinate you. It’s possible that the attempt was intended to fail, as part of a scheme to either disrupt your plans, or to get you to continue them regardless. A feint within a feint.

Will you
>Continue the mission and send the shore party to the surface once you’re in orbit
>Put the mission on hold until you uncover the plot and apprehend those responsible

The show must go on. The Exuberance continues deccelerating toward a parking orbit around the planet. Whoever tried to assassinate you is most likely prepared for either eventuality, no point in slowing your roll now while you track them down.

You knock back a thimbleful of sapho, cybernetic pedipalps grinding furiously against one another beneath your undershirt. Agilus, the auxiliary consciousness the Tleilaxu built into your brain for data processing (and who recognized the trap in time to save you) presents you with the four most likely suspects.

>The expedition’s CHOAM officer, Roger Haut. The only one who could have accessed your dossier legitimately. Obvious motive to kill you: gain complete command over the ship.
>The Tleilaxu whores, Severian and Severa. Could have received information about you from the Bene Tleilax, along with orders to sabotage you.
>The head of engineering, Gell Voivode. Could easily have powered up the exterior shields without leaving any trace,
>The head Navigator, Aten, or one of his subordinate Navigators (who wouldn’t and most likely couldn’t have tried anything without his explicit consent). Would have known exactly how to entrap you, where you’d be and when.

Will you
>Investigate Suspect (choose which one)
>Something else (write in)

Haut, Roger. Son of Gerri Haut and therefore grandnephew of Minor House Haut’s Regent, Emma Haut. Born on the high gravity world Rulag, 46 years old, demonstrated an aptitude for business at an early age. Hired as a trade officer at CHOAM through House Haut’s patron, the House Major Mutelli. Advanced rapidly thanks to his ability to assess the value of a potential acquisition, and to quickly discern whether a transaction was in the company and his interests. Deliberately transferred to a liaison position in Exploration, an unusual move given that ambitious climbers rarely volunteer to serve as representatives aboard Guild ships bound for the unknown universe. May have wished to command his own ship, an unlikely prospect given the Guild only trusts Heighliners with its own born and bred commanders.

We can cover our questions by discussing opportunities for additional finds by following up on the other Navigator's hunches concerning the other planets here.

Task a random expendable crew member to monitor Haut regarding the assassination attempt. Let it slip in casual conversation with several others, so you know it will get around as a rumor.

If the random turns up murdered, then we know Haut is guilty.

Unless the real perpetrator kills the investigator to frame Haut. This is Dune here, anon. Plots within plots are the norm.

Sorry that took so long

You query the first mate, and learn that Haut is in the gymnasium. On the way down, you instruct the most expendible dish washer/sheet changer/menial laborer you come across to keep a close eye on Haut and report to you if he does anything unusual, to which she furtively agrees. That taken care of, you continue to the gym.

On the way down, Agilus reminds you that anyone who’s watching you could easily kill off your would-be informant to throw suspicion on Haut. It’s still worth a try though, and her death would cost you almost nothing and potentially gain valuable information.

Hoyt is playing Jai Alai in zero gravity, the playing field shielded from the reverse-holtzman projectors that generate gravity for the ship. The enormous muscles in his arm pulse as he whips the ball, sweat beading on his hairy, stocky body and floating away in perfectly spherical globes. He notices you watching in between rounds and, satisfied that he’s given a good account of himself, bounds to the exit to join you in 1G. He wipes his face with a towel, slings it around his broad shoulders and salutes.

“Captain.”

He seems surprised to see you.

What do you say or do?
