The anon who runs the Mega has a second trove for community DMs Guild title submissions. Any and all are welcome to submit via email, all anonymously. No promise of quality, though.

Have you ever used any DMs Guild stuff, and if so which ones?

I want to make an archetype for strength monks, but I'm having trouble thinking of interesting features.

To start with, I was thinking of giving extra damage when making an attack using strength to make up for strength being inherently inferior to dexterity. Would the damage being equivalent to barbarian's rage damage be too low, or too high?

To continue with, I would have the archetype give you the choice of using your dexterity in your unarmored defense, or half your proficiency bonus plus two, whichever is highest. This way they may have lower AC depending on stats earlier in the game, evening out to be the same later on unless boons or AC can raise dexterity past the cap.

Those would both be 3rd level features, but I'm afraid they might be too weak and uninteresting compared to the stuff other archetypes get.

Thoughts? Should I think of another feature for 3rd level, maybe extra damage/saving throw effect on a crit?

Consider that the first feature of an archetype should change how they play to some significant degree. Also consider that adding more damage tends to be outside of monk archetype features, which instead either give you new abilities (shadow, four elements, long death) or let you utilize existing features differently (open hand, sun soul).

Honestly, Strength Monks would work best as a collection of variant rules for the class. Think like how the spellless ranger in that one UA presented alternate class features instead of just an archetype, or how file related changes how paladins work so they can be ranged.
>>
>>48119010

If I can think of a 'theme' other than just 'strength and not dexterity' then I'm sure I can make it work as an archetype.
>>
>>48119036
how about altering skills so they rely on strength as opposed to their regular attribute? Strong intimidation, Strong acrobatics, Strong persuasion, ect.
>>
I might be playing a gestalt game soon but I'm not sure what I should play. It kind of makes it a bit harder to come up with a character concept but I've had a few. I was thinking about Barbarian/Monk and just rage punching everything but I've never played a gestalt game and I kinda get the feeling that I would quickly become useless. If you guys were playing Gestalt what would you play? Kinda just want to see what people might do with two classes.
>>
>>48119092

I can't think of very many instances where that happens with other classes and archetypes, and I myself would rule that if you can justify using your skill's proficiency with a different ability score then it's possible for anyone. Pretty sure that the book says it's up to the DM anyways.

I was thinking maybe giving proficiency, expertise, advantage, or some other kind of bonuses to checks could work well thematically for a monk devoting their training and ki to strength.

>gestalt

Why would you ever do that

If you must, pick two classes that work off the same attributes so you don't go MAD

If you want monk then consider ranger, rogue or cleric
>>
>>48119010
Counterargument: the trade-off between Strength-based and Dexterity-based weapons is damage. No Finesse-based weapon other than the rapier has a damage die above d6, the rapier is limited to the least-effective of the three weapon damages (though I realize that's hardly a damning fault), and ranged weapons deal a damage die smaller than melee weapons with comparable properties. So for a monk, the trade-off of lower AC could be for a bigger Unarmed Strike damage die.

>>48118955
Perhaps you could place more emphasis on grappling, which depends on Strength. You could also give light/medium armor proficiency to account for the decreased AC; they can switch back to Unarmored Defense if and when their Wisdom score makes it more effective than armor.

So why aren't you guys playing Dungeon World yet? It's pretty much everything D&D offers except better.

> I want fast combat

Dungeon World does that

> I want character background mechanics

Dungeon World does that

> I want it to feel like D&D

Dungeon World does that

> I want balance between casters and martials

Dungeon World does that

> I want varying levels of success

Dungeon World does that.

Seriously, I don't get why people still pay 50 bucks or MORE for the core rulebooks of D&D when Dungeon World does everything D&D does, except better. It's not a hitpoint slog that requires you to remember tons of complicated rules (even 5e, yes).

Also there is no "builds" or overpowered shit to troll new players who haven't figure out the most OP combos in a game.

So really I don't see what excuse you have for continuing to play D&D, when you can't name a single thing that D&D does better than Dungeon World.

> inb4 sell

If you are unwilling to take the time to find a group that isn't made up of Pathfinder / D&D addicted fucktards, then you don't deserve quality gaming. End of story.
>>
>>48119544
I really enjoy starting at level 3. Early enough that big dangerous threats are big and dangerous and threats, but high enough that you always have options and dont die from a bad roll.

>>48119576
fuck off.
>>
>>48119600
Follow up: should I give everyone a character that I made or should I let them do it themselves?
>>
>>48119096
Warlock/Paladin could be fun. Recharging spell slots for smiting, everything's based on Charisma, lots of per-rest abilities between Channel Divinity and invocations.

At higher levels, possibly Sorcerer/Bard. Magical Secrets to nab the best spells, metamagic to really make 'em pop, like Twinned Swift Quiver.

Or possibly Finesse Weapon Rogue/Barbarian. The build's not as great when it means lagging behind as a rogue, but that's not a problem with gestalt. Use Reckless Attack for free advantage for sneak attacks and Cunning Action to avoid the consequences.
>>
>>48119620
thats a tough call. Ive both ran and played games where we did either or. If this is a 5e, id suggest letting them make their own, but have a few premade characters there for reference and possible NPCs to help round out the party.

That being said, one of the best games I've played was a horror where everybody played a random premade. In that case, the premade characters made sense from a storytelling perspective, so your mileage may vary.
>>
>>48119620
Wizards has some pre-made character sheets that are available publicly for free. They're the same ones that came with the Starter Set, if you know those. I love them because they're basically pre-made and ready to play, but a player can tailor a lot about them to their needs, and of course they can always use them as templates to base their own characters around. I'd reccomend bringing them with you and asking the group what they'd want.

They will need to be scaled up to Level 3, but this also provides your group with an opportunity to taste leveling up and get their teeth into their characters a little bit.
>>
>>48119620
Basic character creation in 5e only takes a couple of minutes. Tell them it's a one-shot so you don't want them trying anything too fancy (like making their own backgrounds) and it should be fine to let 'em make their own.

Alternatively, you could have some partially pre-made characters; you make the race/class/archetype, then let the players choose who they wanna play and let them choose the background and fill out the character's personal info. I'd recommend this if you wanna get them into actual role-playing.

If nothing else, several classes (at least the main four) have at least one archetype specifically designed to be simple to play.
>>
>>48119544
Level 1, or 2 (only because it's not quite as deadly)
Pre-make some characters, get a variety of classes and races, but pick simpler options. If you're running it for a small number of players, make one excess character so everyone has more choice.
Have them be an established group of adventurers, already on a simple quest (such as retrieving an item for a noble, or killing a monster).
Along the way, bring in some complications that allow the group to think on their feet a bit, and improvise. Show them what makes tabletop different from video games. Give them choice. (you can prepare a couple of options you can suggest for them, but don't suggest anything unless they're really stuck)
Let them find some (weak) special items, use them on the monster, trap the creature somehow, or lure it into trouble (pit monsters against each other!)
Have a simple trap that can be escaped or bypassed.
Don't get too bogged down with talky, 'politics', foreplay stuff - get to the adventuring! Roleplaying aloud can be difficult or offputting for new players.

Most importantly - LISTEN! If they're asking about trying something, try and help them do it (if they want to do something unreasonable, suggest something reasonable instead of just telling them they can't do it)

I hope you have fun, too!

And please note than in Dungeon World you don't get punished for playing a fighter, like in 5e D&D. You are proficient with ALL weapons in 5e. Also, damage is by class, which is superior because it doesn't punish you for your weapon choice.

> dat ass on Mialee

I really with they had brought her back in 5th edition. I wanted to fuck her harder than any of the other 3.5 iconics. None of the Pathfinder iconics do it for me; half of them are trannies anyways. But I used to masturbate to the D&D novel where Mialee hooks up with Devis, imagining her tall body rocking up and down on the bard's thighs, and the kinds of noises she would make at orgasm. Her face seriously reminds me of Liza Cuddy from House and I used to fap to their Season Seven sex scene all the time so Mialee is pretty intensely cemented in my sexuality.

Lidda is also pretty hot, Ember really isn't my thing, nor are any of the others, but Mialee is fucking amazing and gorgeous. I am yet to find a porn star that looks like her. Unfortunately she is a wizard so she has a pretty high Will save and it would be pretty hard to rape her with hold person, plus she's an elf so she's immune to sleep so that idea is fucked, too. So it'd have to be consensual. So what I'd do would be something where I get her really drunk like Devis did but since elves have low Con I'd use whatever the D&D equivalent of GHB is (drow knockout poison?). Then have my way with her once she's out.

Seriously, though, I'd wife her in a second, and you're literally gay if you wouldn't do it, too.

Hey /tg/ here's a challenge:

You are facing a human with 10,000 health. No resistances, immunities, or vulnerabilitie. Every stat is 10. AC is 10.

You may choose any race, class, background, and you are level 11. No magic items, all standard equipment is legal. Multiclass if you want.

Find the fastest way to kill this creature. It only resists your attacks and never strikes back. You may not suffocate it or drop it from a cliff. The idea is to use class features/spells.

I can do it in 7 turns. Can you find a shorter way?
>>
If I want to play a Jerren should I just play an asshole Lightfoot Halfling or try to homebrew a subclass?
>>
>>48120383

Can't you just incapacitate it with one of various CC spells and then coup-de-gras? If we're really talking about a plain-jane human that happens to have 10k hitpoints for some reason.
>>
>>48120383
Off the top of my head an Orc Champion could do it fairly quick, but frankly I'm not going to be arsed to do the math.

Level 11 divination wizard
1) Cast Magic Jar
2) (from 100ft away) use a bad divination roll to force the monsterhuman to fail its save, possessing its body
3) walk twenty feet away and cast dispel magic on the soul Jar, using another div roll to force success. You both die

Hey /5eg/, as a GM with some experience running previous editions of D&D planning to run 5E for a new group, is there anything in the core player's handbook I should consider restricting or forbidding at the table for the first campaign, or is the book as is reasonably balanced for use?
>>
>>48120869

That's exactly what I wanted to have, but I don't know how to represent that mechanically. I'm thinking something similar to fiendlock's hurl through hell, rather than quivering palm or touch of the long death.
>>
>>48120946
Read the Errata and remember that the Contagion spell is intended to kick in after the target fails three saves, not immediately.
>>
>>48120946
I wouldn't consider anything released thus far worth restricting or forbidding, until you get to like 8th or 9th level spells. But at that point all bets are off anyways.

>>48120946
Heat Metal and Phantasmal Force, maybe? Heat Metal is especially egregious at low levels against any armored enemies. And Phantasmal Force is a pain in the ass to adjudicate for.
>>
>>48121077
I should note that even with these in, the game runs fine. They can just be a pain in the ass from a DM perspective, compared to other spells of the same level.
>>
>>48120243
Death clerics can do some nasty stuff with a simple Ring of Spell Storing. Remember that if a concentration spell is stored in the ring, the cleric can effectively concentrate on two spells at once, and one of the spells automatically succeeds unless the ring is destroyed. This + Banishment = instant removal spell. Alternatively, the death cleric could use it for something slightly less cheap, and just always have Spirit Guardians turned on.
>>
>>48121077
>>48120946
Heat Metal is equally irritating for players to experience when armored, i recommend blanket restricting it to held and unattended items only, neither the DM or the player has fun if heat metal gets used on someones heavy armor.

I'd also consider restricting a good/evil party mix unless you feel quite confident in your players ability to not fuck up.

>Remember that if a concentration spell is stored in the ring, the cleric can effectively concentrate on two spells at once, and one of the spells automatically succeeds unless the ring is destroyed.
That is, in fact, not how a Ring of Spell Storing works at all.
It DOES allow a non-caster to be your second pseudo-concentration, but it acts entirely as if they cast the spell with your statistics at the time of casting. They need to make potential concentration checks, are limited to concentrating on one spell, and the spell doesn't have any higher chance at success than the original caster would casting it.

2d8 fire damage each turn for 1 minute, no save, for a 2nd level slot so long as the target is wearing metal armor or metal something that can't be removed easily.
>>
>>48121522
It's also Concentration and you need to use a bonus action every turn to continue dealing damage. It's only really useful against enemies wearing armor, which in my experience is honestly not many enemies. You could use the same slot to cast Hold Person.
>>
>>48121522
For concentration and a bonus action. Also making it likely to have the caster become a priority target.
Good to scare a PC with.
>>
>>48121417
It's irritating because the player will often feel like they can't do anything about it, and the lack of save doesn't mesh with pretty much everything else.
It's not overpowered, just annoying to have happen to you, and is uniquely punishing to heavy armor wearing classes.
>>
>>48120383
only thing i can think of is teleportation circling someone to somewhere where a monster will turn them into stone (medusa, gorgon, basilisk, cockatrice, etc.) and then using disintegrate on them. so 11th level wizard of any race i guess. but that doesn't really seem like using class features/spells so much as tricking the environment into winning this contest for you.
but that would be like.... 1 round to teleportation circle, 1 round to shove them into it, 3 rounds to turn to stone, then 1 round to cast disintegrate, so 6 rounds. one up on you in a perfect world.

otherwise 7 rounds is like 1500 damage a round, which i imagine you aren't dealing, even if you are summoning tons of creatures to help you.

>Is Open Hand Monk a good way to go if I want to make a martial character who has some control of the battlefield?
if you want to play a monk sure
monks are less martials and more weird ability lock down characters. you're going to be capable of contributing to your party's damage, but you won't be the one doing it no matter how hard you try, or not past the first few levels anyway. its a battlefield control style character in the sense that you can move through the battlefield and lock someone (or someones) down.

Also, does anyone have other suggestions for a character like that, Monk or otherwise? Control of the field/able to hinder lots of enemies'movements/weaken them in ways besides only doing damage?
>>

Battlemaster Fighter sounds good for you.
>>
>>48122170
>By this you mean, I'll be capable of some damage, but I won't be doing the lion's share of it, right?
yeah. you won't be incapable of killing people, just versus some other damaging classes you'll quickly fall behind. and that isn't to say you won't contribute, just your damage will be secondary to the other things you can do, which is stun, knock people prone, push, etc.
battlemasters can do this to an extent too, but their damage output is higher and their mobility lower (and their number of weird abilities is lower as well). totem barbarians can to an extent. rangers can be okay at this with some terrain spells (and druids too). bladelocks can be surprisingly punishing to be near, but aren't really controllers to the extent that controllers even exist in 5e.
the thing about monks is you'll be the guy who can get anywhere in combat and stun a caster, and even against high constitution enemies, you have 4 chances to stun someone per round, which makes it pretty likely you can stun pretty much anything.

At the very least they regenerate on short rest, but I don't know, I feel like a lot of the later level abilities are too situational and the progression of the first couple of levels is sort of stunted, ki only coming into the picture at level two. What if, when your character runs out of ki points, they have the option to meditate for 30 minutes (without short rest) to regain some, but only a number of ki points up to a maximum of their WIS modifier?
>>
>>48122638
I dunno, the capstone sort of covers that well.
>>
>>48122703
Yeah, but I feel like that's the sort of thing that should be an option way earlier. Things like that and Timeless Body (which I frankly fail to see much broad mechanical utility for) and some others feel inappropriately underbalanced for their level. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Monk should be taken back to the workshop along with Ranger.
>>
Is there any difference in choosing a fey, fiend, or celestial familiar? Specifically for the warlocks pact, though i guess it applies to the find familiar spell as well.
>>
>>48122765
It depends on the campaign really I guess.
but yeah I agree with you, if it and perfect self were swapped around and timeless body was given something else alongside the benefits already listed that might make more sense.

>>48122840
Not really, although if you're a good guy walking about with a fiendish creature it's a bit weird. Other than that there's some magic that affects different creature types as well but that's awfully specific and shouldn't really be worried about.
>>
>>48122638
I think maybe if their number of Ki points was increased BY their Wisdom modifier or something they'd have slightly less issues with resource management.
>>
>>48122912
I'd thought about that too. I'd definitely take that over the class as is. It still has the problem of not scaling well to later levels for something that's the bread and butter of the class, but it's an improvement.

Ah, thanks.
>>
>>48122960
Its pretty straight forward by the looks of things.

>What the player rolls
They roll to attack like normal vs AC

>What the DC given is for
The DC given is for the extra effect. If they save they take damage like normal, if they fail they also take the extra effect.

>Who rolls it? What do they add?
The target of the attack rolls it, usually a monster the player is fighting. They their relevant modifier like strength or constitution.

Tell the retard that Hand Axes don't have the finesse property, so no sneak attack.
If he has a concept that revolves around the axes, he would be better off as a Monk. That would also free up the STR dependency.

It really depends on whether or not the DM will allow handaxes to be used as ranged weapons, because if so he could just throw the fucking thing and it'll work. Of course in the errata it says that thrown weapons aren't ranged, but some DMs allow them to count as ranged so you can sharpshooter throw axes at people.

If it's his first time ever tell him through the game (then directly if he still doesn't get the message) he's fucked up, just don't force him to change things up too much.

Maybe have them find some magic perfume that boosts charisma for an hour or so then give them multiple charisma checks that they destroy with ease to really drill the point in. Could even make the perfume bottle itself magically refill, then at some point later on sap their strength if you really want to realign everything.

and give them "light" handaxes that just so happen to be mechanically identical to daggers. It's no doubt really just a reskin they want anyway.
>>
I'm currently preparing for a campaign and a friend of my group would love to also give the game a try, not having played it before, but only has time on a non-regluar basis due to his job.

He wants to play a typical human barbarian that goes around the world fuckig hookers and doing typical barbarian crap.

How do I properly integrate that? Have the character be a wanderer who occasionally stumbles over the rest of the group to join them for a bit and have his level always be 1 below the group average to keep him relevant but not give to much free advantage? How would you handle item progression and the likes for him?
>>
>>48123870
Okay.
Let's say it has a match.
>one action to light flame
>one action to cast spell
Two actions!
Lighting the flame can't be included in the spell, because if you use a focus you wouldn't even need to light the flame in the first place.
Or, is lighting a flame now a 'use an object' action or something? There's a bunch of one-action spells that light flames.
>>
>>48120869
>>48120974

Perfect Strike: When you use the Attack action, you can make a single, incredibly powerful unarmed attack against a single target. This is a normal unarmed strike made with advantage, and you double your unarmed strike damage die and any ability score you add to damage if you hit. If you have the ability to make more than two attacks as part of an Attack action (such as the Extra Attack feature from another class), you still make only one attack when using Perfect Strike, but each additional attack you would make increases the multiplier to your unarmed strike and ability score by +1 (x3 for two attacks, x4 for four attacks, and so on).
This feature replaces the Monk's Extra Attack feature gained at 5th level.

Gather Ki: When you use the Attack action on your turn to make an unarmed attack, you can use a bonus action to gather your energy before striking. Your attack ignores resistance to damage, and you add your Wisdom modifier to the damage roll on a hit. Starting at 11th level, your attack treats immunity to damage as resistance instead.
This feature replaces the Monk's ability to use a bonus action to make extra unarmed attacks as part of the Martial Arts ability.

(Note: I wanted to avoid turning the bonus unarmed attacks from Martial Arts into just more multiplier, mostly because it seemed a little too "It's exactly the same, only with a different flavor." to me. So, the Perfect Strike Monk is just amazing at punching through a creature's defenses and killing things that really shouldn't be able to be punched to death. Plus, the Gather Ki adding your Wisdom to damage still ends up adding twice as much damage as normal to the Perfect Strike, while also allowing you to have the "One extra-powerful strike." attack available from level 1.)
>>
>>48123946
Tell him that with 4 charisma his character is autism or down syndrome or socially retarded in some way.

Though, like others said, you might allow them some graces such as light handaxes, intimidation using strength and.. there's not a lot else you can do. Heavy armour in there somehow?
He'll still be a shitty character so it won't hurt to give some graces.

On the other hand, even if you do help him out, he sounds like the sort of guy who's going to start fucking around in your campaign and probably be the first to cause drama.
>>
>>48124146
How come you are having him be one level below the average? And just go human barbarian with the tough feat. Give him 16 strength, 14 Con 14 Charisma, 12 Dex, 10 Wis 8 Int. The 14 Cha should be good for the persuasion checks. Pick the Guild Artisan background, so maybe he was a smith or an innkeeper before, so he gets persuasion as a proficiency.

That should cover it. When he's level 3 go Frenzy barbarian, if you want to be able to use the intimidating presence, or go Totem and make doggy style jokes throughout the campaign.

Hey /tg/, I need some ideas for human specific magic items. Doesn't need to be anything amazing, just thematically human. We all know what elven or dwarven artifacts look like, but what's a human artifact like?
>>
>>48124192
No it's not a free action, it's a:

You are thinking too far into this, its just a game with dragons and spells and wizards action. You get one per turn.
>>
>>48124212
Always having advantage on your attack action attack sounds pretty lame when it means you gain no benefit from advantage, unless you also have disadvantage.
>>
>>48124146
Yeah we did that for our second paladin guy who couldn't make it pretty much every other session. He was a neutral nature boy that was focused on the balance of life and death, who would follow a calling every now and then and come back covered in mud, scratches and the odd rotten tooth embedded in leather portions of his armour. He would get some experience from those times away, but giving out magic items and stuff off screen feels weak.

If you want to get them back up to speed quick maybe think of a way to have them split off from the rest of the party during a dungeon crawl. Something like a trap door that detects the strength of those who stand on it and only opens for tough guys, then a passageway which requires a few other strength checks which leads out into a room with some big heavy magic weapon. Basic stuff like potions could have been purchased by him over the off time though.
>>
>>48124239
It's probably things that lets human's be even more humans.

An amulet that lets you speak any common language for one hour, must wait until dawn the next day to use again. This is the uncommon version, the rare version lets you pick between a common or exotic language.

Ring of long living. Only works with humans, you age half as quickly as other humans. So now human's live about 150-200 years.

How to not be racist manual: A book that when used can grant you information on the culture of a race of humanoids so you can stop being such a racist fuck.
>>
>>48124237
The lower level would be because he'd otherwise have the same amount of XP and everything as the others while not having to risk anything by being absent about 50-75% of the sessions. It's basically a bit if a risk/reward equalizer so that the others don't feel discouraged because he gets the same shit they get for literally not playing .
>>
>>48124239
Humans in D&D are all about progress and ambition, I'd make their artefacts modern, new inventions rather than some historical, atlatl bullshit.
>>
>>48124252
I just like to think the wizard pulls fucking flame out of their component pouch.

It could be something that ignites on exposure to air, but...

>>48124239
I'd think like a 'Sword of atonement' or a sword dedicated to protecting the people, or a rather ordinary weapon that was used by an upstart hero into fame, whose dying spirit inhabits the seemingly ordinary sword (Might be an interesting weapon, being powerful but fragile).
Some sort of patchwork magic item such as plate armour with each individual piece made by a different person from a different school of magic from a different background.

Glasses of Not Fucking Having Darkvision

... You know, this is really hard.
Perhaps an item that uses every single stat (With humans normally having +1 to everything) for individual effects such as:
Strength: You can choose to use a 1/day special melee attack. Likely double strength modifier damage. Or, push someone strmodx5ft distance.
Dex: You can use a 1/day special throwing attack or fire a vial of something from a compartment, likely double dex modifier damage or something.
Con: Heal someone based on your own con modifier.
Int: Item does an int check for you with double your int modifier, even if you've just failed it. 1/day.
Wis: Call divine magic to scare (wis modifier) evil beings. 1/day.
Cha: Improve the mood of someone by (chamod) steps, once a day.
>>
>>48124146
Why bother making him weaker?
In fact, why are people different levels anyway? Do people still track individual xp these days instead of just leveling every few sessions?
>>
>>48124400
We usually aredoing that since our houseruling rewards people with some bonus xp for completing a quest relevant to their character specifically or by doing some really cool shit nobody saw coming.
>>
>>48124239
Or, perhaps playing off of the 'humans are the midpoint, diplomacy with all the fucking races and do all the things' gimimck
An item that allows a human to be respected as another race's member.
If you're against orcs, you can present it and they'll not be so immediately aggressive against you, but they're still unlikely to respect you're weedy. .. And will probably bully you.
An elf might still scoff at an uncivilized act of yours but would mostly stop being as haughty about your race.

Or, perhaps..

An item that identifies anything that is NOT mundane from a distance. Perhaps a magnifying glass that does not magnify, but you can only see mundane things through it.

Healing potion? Not mundane.
Sickle? Mundane.
Sickle with a blessing that makes it glow once every year? Not mundane.
>>
>>48124400
Party members that go out of their way to do further the plot, do interesting things and flesh out their character more shouldn't be levelling up as slowly as ones that may as well be NPCs.

A hand axe is essentially a short sword as far as mechanics in D&D go. If your DM won't allow you to sneak attack with pretty much any melee weapon that does up to 1d6 they're kind of missing the point of the game.
A rogue that rolls with an axe has good flavor potential and not to mention that a sap is basically a mace/club with a different name.

I use this to roll random encounters for players, I take these as an inspiration and build campaigns off of it. I am building a one shot now for a level 7 party that involves Yuan-to because of that encounter generator. You can pick the setting, the level of the characters, and difficulty. Sometimes it really likes a few specific kinds of creatures but mess with it and it can give inspiration.
>>
>>48124469
>>48124507
Personally I do think they should still be rewarded, but don't give them something like EXP which is practically permanent.

Inspiration is a nice 'pat on the back'.
They might gain the notice of some NPCs who might help them.
If they're doing evil things very well? Evil NPCs might help. Maybe they'll be given a magic item or something.

Items are not necessarily as permanent as exp. They might be replaced, might be damaged or stolen or given to another character. They may even have limited uses.

The only saving grace with exp rewards is the rate at which you need more exp to level, and gaining more exp at higher levels means a really cool thing you did at level 1 is unlikely to put you an extra level ahead.

Is a city festival a good start for a session and to have the party meet? Said party includes a dwarf warlock with a pact to an ancient god of wrath, a halfling rogue disguised as a wizard, with no party member knowinf he's actually a rogue, a dragonborn fighter without many unique traits and what will most likely be a bard.

Was thinking about having them all at the festival with some mysterious shit happening that they end up investigating and getting involved in (probably some mysterious deaths during the festival or something).

Yeah, he'd be getting XP for not playing... but the downside of that is that he doesn't get to play. XP isn't a reward for playing, it's a method of determining how powerful the characters are, nothing more. The reward for playing is getting to play, have a good time, hang out with friends, and tell a fun story.

Instead, you're penalizing him for not being able to play with you by making the times he does get to play with you slightly worse, because he'll never be able to contribute quite as much as his allies to any given adventure.

Has anyone ever used sentient weapons? Whether it be a Beserker Axe, Bloodrazor, or something homebrew, share your experience with weapons that had a mind of their own. I'll start with mine.

Lesson learned.

It sounds like this isn't comic book Bane; this is memetastic movie Bane. Breaking people's backs should be only incidental, and growth potions should probably not be present at all. He's already a big guy.

To get it right, you need to focus on a few things. First, absurdly elaborate plans that nevertheless work out perfectly. Tricking the PCs into burning down a noble estate by releasing harmless CR 0 twig blights was a good start, but you have to keep that up. Have him continue to ruin the PCs' reputation and resources before he moves in for the kill. At some point getting caught should be part of his plan.

Second, he needs completely fanatical followers. Play up his cult of personality by showing how willing his mooks are to lay down their lives at his whim. Each one should have a lot of loyalty for a sellsword.

Third, he needs a weird ambiguous love interest. This can be whatever PC is first to engage him. Have him single out that PC as often as possible for weird grandstanding and flirting. A Bane needs a CIA.

I wrote a festival thing for the Dm's Guild where the draw is either helping to solve an apparent murder or the promise of magic items for the winners of the various games. That might work. It includes a bards' contest and a spellcasting contest it would be funny to watch the rogue try to bullshit his way through.

What would be the maximum level to keep a low-magic campaign consistent? When would things start getting out of hand?
>>
>>48126274
Yessir. "Fist" is probably not a legal spell, though.
>>
>>48126324
Traditionally the level to stop at for that kind of thing is 6. Enough for fireballs and impressive action surges, but not enough to rewrite reality or attack eight times in six seconds.
>>
>>48126324
I think if you ban bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, and wizard you can go into deep levels fine. It's really the 7-9th level slots that get bonkers and then you can still have "high magic" bad guys without houseruling much.

If you want to go super low fantasy you can make short rest into a daily thing and a long rest when you get a few days off. That way your warlock is still the best magic user without daily high level spell slots, paladins have to stretch out their abilities, ranger class abilities are much more useful, etc.

>Warrior's Rest is a neutral inner plane in the cosmology of Toril. With perhaps the most misleading title in the whole cosmology, the theme of the Warrior's Rest is battle, and each petitioner has no constant loyalty to a deity. When a petitioner is slain in combat during one of the endless chaotic battles, he rises again on the team that brought him down.

Its mainly full casters you'd need to worry about. Even at low levels they have a lot of effects that can dramatically change a world. Continual flame, for example, is rather cheap for an endless light source for a city or whatever.

You could probably get away with only half-casters and under, with Magic initiate to allow access to those other lists.
>>
>>48126566
At least you get to escalate your shit quickly, have the widest spectrum of available spells at one time available, can buff your spells through invocations and get some pretty good boons due to your pact item.
>>

Until some asshole with Darkness walks by and dispels them all automatically.

So what do you guys think about the Abyssal Tiefling from the "That Old Black Magic" UA? I'm considering letting a player use it, but I don't really have a good eye for balance. It doesn't seem too OP or anything in my opinion though.

Well, presumably they'd be space out a bit more than that, but even then, you see how this is straying away from a low-magic setting when the only obstacle to magical street lamps is money and assholes who also have magic.

Isn't that basically the same thing as the Archeron and Ysgard outer planes? I guess Archeron has rust dragons which are terrible, and I don't know if you do the side switching thing in Ysgard, but otherwise there's a lot of similarities there

Hello 5th Ed general. I noticed there's a general for 5e and another for Pathfinder, but no older or, uh, general D&D thread.

>>

In a low magic setting spells like greater invisibility, Divination, and Fabricate I would call it. Those are almost god like spells to anything that isn't fighting magic users very often. So yeah level 6 should be the cut off.

So... how the hell is this plane not just all one army sitting around with nothing to do? I mean, it only takes one major push, and everybody you killed is now on your side, so you kill even more, thus swelling your ranks even more, until eventually your army is so massive you've killed everybody else.

I'm just imagining everybody sitting around in the same uniform, bored out of their minds... until some poor, hapless petitioner pops into the plane, and there's a mad dash to be the one to kill him, just to get a tiny break from the monotony.
>>
>>48125843

well it all started when I decided to make a homebrew world and dropped the players in a randomly generated fractal map full of mostly humans who had dominated the world with numbers, the dwarves went underground and sold weapons to the humans and kept to themselves and became space marines/brotherhood of steel, meanwhile the elves fight the humans, lose, get enslaved, and now there are two warring nations on opposite sides of the ocean, one free, and one whose prime industry is elf slavery. The starting city is a main port used by the slave nation, and so far the party hasn't taken any sides, just kind of accepted it as it is. Then a portal opened up and took them to Ravenloft (for Halloween) and then pooped them back out 3 years later via time dilation. Now there's a femal blue shadow dragon who's horny and wants the PC's grandfather's gold dragon that met years ago creating an origin of the pc's powers to take back to the shadowfell as her "plaything" and a nighthag who's relatives and cessationists from the Blood War spilling over into the Fey and recruiting people has come through the opening as well to make a new home for and her people. Essentially they left the dimensional "door open" and now things are getting in kind of deal. So not!bane is working for the dragon lady through Helga, who was a minor NPC in Ravenloft but is now (to the player's knowledge) the sole BBEG of the campaign.

If this sounds like an insane story, it's what happens when you decide to create lots of interesting characters and let them "grow" in terms of their goals and attitudes and see who kills what and what happens to what. Kind of like how GRRM wrote ASOIAF. It's quite difficult, but so far my players are eating it the fuck up, and I never let go of a random npc I've tailored. Even if I don't know how the fuck x npc is going to fit into the campaign, I shove him/her in and have them meet them sometime somehow, and eventually they find themselves the perfect fit, whether it's the villain, ally, or neutral. It creates some depth, and gives me lots of room to make shit up and also gives me a framework with what I can work with. It's just, like ASOIAF, finding a way to end it will be tough...but I don't think that's as big an issue as it is in writing novels.

Get inspiration from real cities or realistic looking fantasy stuff.

When building a town the first thing you think of is why the fuck do people live hear. A nearbye source of water is important, so many cities have bridges going over a river that goes through a town. Second where do the rich/important people live. Most of the time they are in the most middle, but if that happens to be a river it may be a certain side of the water. Where does everyone else live. Think just where the walls can defend but not where the rich people are. Merchants should have a nice big road connecting to the major ways in and out for trading, guard posts should be at the gates and either spotted throughout the town or not at all depending on crime. Build one, then improve as you see what you think you could have done better.

If I wanted to be a mounted Fighter using a Lance and Shield, would the Dueling fighting style work with the Lance? Would Great Weapon Fighting style work?

DMs, what do you do when your players don't really have a leader? Someone to make decisions drive the plot, and develop the team as something more than 5 dudes who just kill things and get gold for a living.

My party's players aren't really take charge kind of guys, I am hesitant to give them a DMPC cause that is just me playing with myself at that point.
>>
>>48124104
That is not how it works. Ranged weapons are under Ranged Weapons in the PHB. Anything not under there is not a ranged weapon. You can throw a melee weapon and make a ranged weapon attack, but it's still not a ranged weapon. Conversely, you could whack someone with a bow, making a melee weapon attack with a ranged weapon...it's still not a melee weapon.
>>
>>48129114
If they want to embrace the murderhobo within them then you should either create a campaign that allows them to be the greatest murderhobos they can be or you can put up a time constraint such as the world ending in a few months if they don't stop the BBEG.
>>
>>48129114
Have an npc take interest and talk directly to the one person you think it more likely to become the face character, draw the role out of them.
>>
>>48129201
It's not that they are murderhobos they just can't kind of form up behind someone, it feels like every decision is kind of awkward no, let's go do this, it's all asking and not sure.

I like this, a little bit of in character blame could probably kickstart the group. The paladin or warlock should be able to step forward.

>>48129778
Really confusing*, such as level 3 spells, and all the abilities wouldn't be easy to get in a first session. Start with attacking once, level 1 spells, and a typical dungeon crawl to show the fun of having true freedom compared to a video game.

What information should I put into my application for a game? It'd be my first time playing, reading through the Player's Basic Rules as of now. I'm thinking a short introduction and character race/class with a bit of background, but I'm lost beyond that

Starting from level 1 can get repetitive, but starting at level 5 seems too much. Level 3 seems a good starting point in 5e.

I have never seen a martial in my games perform the twelve hit black lotus flying dragon death strike that seems to be touted as why casters can't keep up with martials in melee.
The fighter attacks twice every round for basic damage and sometimes throws in an extra d8 and rolls 2 and 3 on his damage dice. Once per day he can attack two extra times and usually misses with them.
>t-they have the best damage casters can't unleash these nukes
>muh 20th level whiteroom attack sequences assuming perfect conditions with everything hitting
Paladin is a gish and feels like the only class that can consistently dish out the pain in a way that a polar bear druid or valor bard can't compare to, and they use spell slots for it.
