Hey /tg/, long time lurker here. My group of friends is rotating along who gets to be DM, and sooner rather then later it'll be my turn. So far, we started with a fantasy adventure in not!Lord of the Rings, STALKER using Gurps, and the next two are going to be our Dragonage fanboy's wet dream and a 16th century adventure of perils and regret.

I want to go to space, maybe have my PCs be on a ship. What system(free would be best) would be good for 2-6 people, not including DM?
Also, I would like to set my RP in either starwars or Halo, but I think that I'd enjoy it a lot more then the players.

Wildly different in tone, but each is possible in GURPS
-BAsic set has force swords and psychic powers built in for star wars. Go with cinematic skills (weapon master jedi or Trained by a master Jedi) and then everyones on the same par with point totals. No 'jedi are flat superior' issues there
-Halo will probably need Ultratech for some gun porn, but not much, as the weapon slection is minimal/streamlined in that universe. Each player who is a spartan is likely built into a suit of power armor straight from the basic set(again) and easily fits the bill of super soldier at that point, regardless of how they buy up skills and advantages.

If you can convince them, the FFG starwars stuff is not bad. Proprietary dice though, depends on how you feel about that.
Obvious base scifi is Traveller for jerks in a spaceship doing odd jobs. If your group is fine with gurps they'll be fine with traveller. Stars Without Number is an interesting newer OSR alternative. Its got classes instead of skill/career base which bothers some people though. Its got loads of stuff for randomly generating star systems, empires, aliens, and what they're up to which might be handy regardless of what system you end up using. Diaspora is the FATEish equivalent, has a really neat way of having everyone generate the world during character creation.
3:16 Carnage is a fun hyperviolent rules light that might actually work well as a Halo game now that I think about it. Easy to teach too.
Savage worlds is a pretty solid choice.

Well, if you want to go really simple and rules-lite, this is what you need. It's more for Star Trek style campaigns though.

I really like the FFG Star Wars system. Unfortunately with the dice and the core book scamola, it's a huge racket, but you can pirate dice rolling apps for android if you're playing irl or Roll20 will handle it for you.
