In the last thread the existence of IW Beakies was proven, Anons talked about what mark you give to who, a good portion of the thread was older art(Blanche mostly) vs newer art, a /k/omando had a stroke, if you kill a Xeno you should turn it into a taco, and so much more I'm forgetting because of Tennessee cooking has poisoned my guts in the old bread >>47822497

>none of the other legions really call out to me.
If you're certain about that, then there's nothing to be done, is there. Just toll a D20 to pick the second legion. Or, more likely, don't bother with the second box. Let someone else do it.

Fluffwise, most loyalists work since the WB were at Isstvan V, Calth (and the rest of Ultramar), and Terra. It leaves out the Dark Angels and Space Wolves.

You could also have them fighting the World Eaters, and you could justify the Alpha Legion too. Or anyone else immediately after the Heresy, I should think.

If you're making the 2 armies to allow you to introduce new players to the game, I'd actually suggest going with militia or solar auxilia for army 2. That gives you 2 playstyles and one much easier/cheaper force to build.

Let's do another rundown of each legion's activities after the Great Crusade:

I - DA - Forestry
III - EC - Modern art
IV - IW - Construction, but they get the dirty work
V - WS - Courier-poets
VI - SW - Animal shelter volunteers (okay, realistically they're still watching over the other legions)
VII - IF - Civil engineers and construction crew
VIII - NL - Monsters under the bed for hire
IX - BA - Classical art, modeling
X - IW - Run a popular line of hardware stores
XII - WE - Gladiatorial combat
XIII - UM - Bureaucracy/Administration
XIV - DG - HazMat removal, pest extermination
XV - TS - Magic shows, fortune telling
XVI - SoH - Coaches/business consultants? Kinda stumped with these guys.
XVII - WB - Motivational speeches, city planning
XVIII - Sallies - Firefighting, fire dancing
XIX - RG - Private investigators
XX - AL - Every political conspiracy theory is true and it's their fault
>>
>>47848998
>X - IW
Shouldn't that be IH? Or is this some new meme that I missed out on?

English is not my native tongue so I'm not sure if "any unit the model passes directly over suffers hits" means "any one unit" or "any amount of units".

If the model passes over 1 unit, only one unit can be hit. If it passes over 2 units, it may hit both. If it passes over 6, it may hit 6. And so on.

>mfw those NLfags think their supposed "Sworn Brothers" share back their feelings

"In the study, researchers from the MIT Media Lab asked 84 undergraduates in a class to score how well they knew other people in the class. They “asked each participant to score every other participant on a 0–5 scale, where 0 means ‘I do not know this person’, 3 means ‘Friend’ and 5 means ‘One of my best friends,’" as the paper explains. Then, the participants were asked to predict how other people would score them.

Predictably, people thought that the people who they considered their friends would also rate them as friends. But this wasn’t the case. Almost half of all the friendships reported in the survey weren’t reciprocal—meaning that only one of the two people considered the other a friend. This, the researchers note, might be about social climbing: People might be more likely to claim friendship with a person of higher social standing, while people who are popular are more choosy about who they call a friend"

Why do EC hate NL?
>>

Everyone hates NL. EC may dislike them a bit more since they are cowardly, honourless assholes.

Meanwhile shit lords are recruited from prison scum
>>
>Horus Heresy in a nutshell

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3IJD3md5Uw
>>
>>47857890
They're complete opposites

Before they went off the deep end the EC were noble as fuck, right from the word go - their first recruits were the children of the warrior-nobility of Europe.
They were the Emperor's ambassadors for a time (hence the purple) and fought with honour, they had a rigid structure and chains of command

NL were criminal scum from Terra's prison-sinks (think the prison from the third batman movie) and born amongst people who'd been imprisoned - think what kind of asshole you have to be to be imprisoned during the age of strife on Terra, that's who they grew up amongst.
They were a weapon of terror and retribution, with chaotic organisation and fractious command, fighting as dirty as they come

Also the light and dark contrast is pretty striking here - probably the only legion more "light" is the BA

I really hate some of the new fluff. It really takes away from how important the primarchs were to the legions now that we know so many of them already acted like they world when the primarchs got found. War Hounds were already berserkers. Night Lords were already recruited from prisoners. Both Iron legions were mechanically inclined.
What's the point of having the primarchs get lost, learn a new culture, and influence their legions when discovered if they don't change much. And it makes things less plausible. The gods of CHAOS were organized enough to match primarchs to their homeworlds with that much thematic perfection? Boring.

The only legion I like more now than before the HH books came out are the Death Guard/Dusk Raiders. They used to be raiding specialists and used excellent tactics, and had a distinct identity.
Then Morty showed up and said, "You're the Death Guard now. You like poison and not having a sense of humour."
>>
>>47858453
Those legions were always inclined the way their Primarchs were because they were made from their geneseed. The Primarchs just taught them how to do it better. I agree that matching the homeworlds was a little to perfect of a coincidence, but you get the best guys to be the best at what they do because it's literally in their genes and then trained.
>>
>>47857890
Curze hates Fulgrim because he ratted on him about his visions of the grim dark future of the imperium, to Dorn.
>>
>>47858453
To be fair Chemos was an impoverished shithole, hardly a world that would have suited Fulgrim and I don't think Baal seemed very fitting for Sanguinius. Also I feel like if they were trying to be thematic than Perturabo should have landed on some perpetual WW1 planet that he united after leading a non-stop offensive over the course of decades to slowly drive back every enemy from hundreds of thousands of miles of trenchworks and static defenses.
>>
>>47858681
To a degree, yes, but half of the fun of having the primarchs getting lost in the first place was the change wrought by the event. Morty's history implies he was intended to be a very different type of fighter, Sanguinious wasn't designed with wings, and if Russ was supposed to be a werewolf, then the writers are sit. The new fluff just takes it too damn far. I mean, how are we supposed to see the NLs getting slowly corrupted by Nostroman recruits if they've always been made up of the worst of the worst criminals? Especially since the Astartes, all of the Astartes, were supposed to be the Emperor's representatives.
Having him reorganize and make due with what he got is much, much better storytelling than, "Wow, good thing nearly every primarch ended up on a planet that trained them to be exactly what I wanted them to be in the first place. Saved me having to train them. Thanks Chaos!"

You got me on Perturabo.

I just find it more engaging if the primarchs were molded into their identity by their new homeworld, discovering what they need to be organically. The new stuff is comparatively lazy.

If legions reflect what their primarch's skill was supposed to be, then Morty was destined to be a sneaky raider type, getting an unbeatable amount of troops in place covertly, then unleashing them.

Not really, they were named "raiders", but they still excelled at heavy infantry tactics, much like the Iron Hands (who also hailed from Old Albia in their initial recruiting)

Sure, post-Morty they get grim, poison shit, and lessen up on armoured formations, but they were always heavy infantry based, and Mort was a peerless infantryman

World Eaters Assault Squad: bunny ears veteran helmets or no? I buy veteran heads because the regular upgrades come with 9 helmets and a bare head and I hate helmetless dudes, the veterans heads are just 10 heads. I've just been cutting the ears off the regulars and keeping the ears on the Sergeant, so as not to confuse them with vets. My Assault sergeant would have a different weapon anyway to differentiate him. Anyone have opinions?
>>
>>47859683
Depends if you have (ideally assault-oriented) veterans.
If you do, leave the bunny ears to them. If not, then the Assault Squad can have them

IIRC, the bunny ears were a Nuceriaian signifier of one lost to combat madness in the arena, so I have to wonder if Angron had them at one point - given how dangerous he was, but also considering that he could lead both a slave revolt and a legion, I'm actually inclined to say he never had them, but it's a fun image

>>
>>47859816
My army fluff is mid-late heresy, where basically everyone has lost their sanity already, including the Spartan driver. Sergeants use the bunny ears as another of those misguided attempts at connecting with the Primarch, not that he really cares. Mostly I just want to cut out the ear trimming step because I'm lazy, but there's always room for army growth so I won't discount veterans for the future. Probably just keep the assault squad bunnyless.

Underrated post. Along with some others (like the Iron Tenth), the Dusk Raiders were the Heavy infantry legion. They didn't sneak for shit, they punched your right in the face.
Morty got them to perform that role even better and added things like ZM proficiency, simplified logistics, the Barbaran-recruits-only policy, moar proscribed weaponry and enhanced tactical flexibility to their already defined command order and heavy infantry tactics, >>47858453

Captcha asked for street signs but the pic was a tree branch, wtf?
>>
>>47863061
Arlatax are jump and we don't really know what they'll look like yet aside from being a tad less stout than the Castellax and Domitar (and, presumably, some kind of jump pack). So he'd need a lot more work to look like an Arlatax, since they have two arm guns, a chin gun and jump equipment. By comparison a Domitar just has a missile launcher and that's it.

If you want it to be a good unit I'd go the extra mile and make it an Arlatax, though. Domitars kind of suck when you compare them to other options Mechanicum have and look critically at their points cost.
>>
Was thinking about dropping my Land Raider for my Templar Brethren + Sigismund for a Dreadclaw...these leaves 150 extra points to play around with. I have: Contemptor Cortus with Kheres (150 pts) or 5 man Heavy Bolter Heavy Support Squad with Augury Scanner/AA sergeant (150 pts). which do you think will get more mileage? I'm leaning towards the HB squad because a Contemptor standing next to my Imperial Knights will look kinda "don't talk to me or my son ever again"
>>
What possible purpose does the Thanatar-Calix serve?

It trades a nasty ass weapon for... A S10 lascannon.

And a flame template, on a model which can't run and is proportionately wimpy in melee for cost.

And it costs notably more.
>>
>>47863558
You answered it yourself. It's a bad unit that doesn't fill any roles because it tries to do too many things at once on a slow ass platform. It's supposed to be anti-fortification, but there's better weapons for the job and if you really want to slap a bunker to death a knight does the job better for only slightly more points.

Fulgrim got spared from the Soylent Green baby-grinder by the planet's executives, but he got adopted by the policeman that found him on his superman capsule (a member of the Caretaker chemosian police force).
Fulgrim's early life was spent as a miner, and his engineering genious led him to be the head of the planet's industrial revolution that ended Chemos' food crisis, and the people ELECTED him Executive supreme.

All of that when he was a little older than 15.

>>
>>47864638
How many points? At higher points levels I imagine a 5 man team is going to get shot to death or crippled at 1-2 men left so you need the extra wounds just to keep them alive.

That said they don't all have to be lascannons, right? I can't remember the rules for default HS squads.

So a displacer matrix gives me a +1 to my invulnerable save, but if I roll a 1, I'm put in ongoing reserve. From what I heard from other people, you don't take a wound when you roll the 1?

Yeah, had to look it up, I couldn't remember if that was a thing or not. Single weapon ten man lascannon would be pretty expensive and if they have any AP3 artillery it could be a a very vulnerable target. That said, it's 30k, everything is big and expensive so it's worth a try.

No he didn't. He worked in the factories, worked his way up to be the manager and ran shit so efficiently than he eventually was made leader of the planet. It would actually be pretty cool if the primarchs were actually well shaped by their worlds. Imagine a Fulgrim that is more gruff and pragmatic from his time trying to efficiently run a dying planet.
"paint that armour drab grey, wearing purple will get you shot in battle"
"what the hell are you using this shitty charnabal sabre for? take a power axe like a normal astartes"

You have one scoring unit. If you're playing Age of Darkness scenarios and you roll something other than a kill points mission you're gonna have a bad time.

The Thanatar-Calix is objectively bad, but I'm guessing you have the model already so... oh well?

You can take up to 6x Vorax in a unit now, and to be honest I don't think it's worth the points to upgrade their shooting. If you're up against Solar Auxilia the Enhanced Targeting Array could prove useful but Bio-Corrosive is pointless since you'll be wounding everything but Ogryns on a 4+ anyway.

What is the Tech-Priest unit for? Nuncio-Vox can't be used for deep striking if they're in the vehicle, and you don't have any artillery.

The BIo-Corrosive is honestly just something to trim off the last 50 points I had lying around.

If you need something to challenge a superheavy you're better off with a dedicated tank destroyer or an Imperial Knight (which Mechanicum can take as LoW). The Thanatar-Calix is just bad and doesn't really do anything well. The Krios Venator is one of the best tank destroyers available to any army in 30k so if you're just playing test games and don't have models yet you might want to consider one of them.

I think overall what you need to do is trim back all of your upgrades, see how many points that gives you, and then see what you can do from there. You're spending a ton of points on upgrades for almost all of your units that won't pay off. I'm sure you can probably get more models/units in your list if you cut some of the fat out.

You also probably want to homogenize your Castellax unit a bit. Having a mix of weapons implies a mix of roles, and that's not something you really want them to do. Either make them snipers that are capable of close combat if challenged (with Darkfire Cannons) or make them your line units that close the center (with Mauler Bolt Cannons). The only thing I'd think about taking in mixed quantities would be a Siege Wrecker just in case you need to crack open something big. Also, if you're pushing the line, you want to give them Frag Grenades so they aren't I1 when they charge into terrain (this is assuming, of course, that you're playing with enough terrain).

I'm pretty sure your Ferrox unit is actually not legal, since as far as I know they aren't allowed to upgrade their lightning guns. Either way, again, you want the squad doing the same thing. Right now it's all over the place plus you're wasting points on redundancy - pick either Melta Bombs or Heavy Chainblade, but don't do both, that's just silly.

tl;dr read the tactics section on 1d4chan and learn more about basic army composition and which units are trap choices. Most of the Mechanicum is decent but the traps are very shitty.

Swap the Domitar for The Homonculex (which is just an Arlatax with extra free rules that Scoria gets to bring) and yeah, I guess that sort of works. I think you're still wasting a lot of points on upgrades (especially the Tech-Priests) but to each their own.

Domitars are one of the other big trap choices, especially now that the Arlatax literally does the same thing it does but better. Downside is that the Domitar has a really cool model and the Arlatax doesn't have any model yet.

Yeah, it's a shame their rules are so bad. I love the model but even before the Arlatax there was no reason to take them when you could do the same things just as well with Castellax. Now that the Arlatax exists they make no sense at all.

When it comes to his model tho, I know a lot of people dont like his face, and I can see that, but sometimes it can just be a shitty paintjob, cuz on the pic related i doesnt look nearly as bad

yeah but Perty is the siege and human wave primarch, Guilliman is supposed to be the tactics and strategy primarch

I mean I can buy Angron loosing at chess to a marine or even very gifted human, but if he looses a 1v1 gladiator fight against a 60 pound cripple, well that makes him look kinda shit at "his thing"
>>
>>47873024

used my IW 2000pts list against 2000pts of WE, which was heavily geared towards footslogging over the table.

not only do world eaters burn pretty nice, the extra terrain tests ensured i had a little more time to pour lead into them.
in the end, my 2 Medusa's and 4 Quad mortars killed the majority of his infantry.

Hey, I didn't say it, HH3 implied it. But yeah, it wasn't Perty's thing, although mental ability is far more plausible than overcoming Angron's "I benchpress Titans" physical prowess. Furthermore, didn't Macharius fucking outdid Guilliman's 200 years of conquests in less than a decade?
Or Horus', given how it's stated Guilliman conquered the most worlds, but they don't say how many.

as for Mecharius eh, the GC conquered some million worlds in 200 years, give or take, if the SMs are responsible for just half of this, divided by 20 that's still some 25k worlds each legion brought into the Imperium, granted most of those probably not through conquest

Big Mac got about 1000 worlds in 7 years, though many of these had been Imperial at various points.

Bobby G had his 500 worlds, but that's his mini-empire, not his known total - the Ultras have the "most worlds" record, but purgings, xenocides, space stations and other kinds of victories means that the old fluff for "most victories" being LW, DA, SW in order may still be valid - the DA in particular are known to have fought a huge xenocide that saved the northern imperium, at the cost of their legion's primacy
