>>
>>43677898

Depends what you to achieve.

Wash? Water
Just a little thinning? Water or anything you want
Glazing? 1/1 Glazing medium and a drop of water
Drybrushing? A drop of water
Inking? A lot of water and a drop of glazing medium (so it doesn't make paint rings)

>>
>>43680797

It's actually pretty easy to do if you mix some brown and black wash as a preshade then mix your base color with colored wash like 2:3 and go over it. Youtube is full of examples, I especially remember a guy doing his Krieg
>>
>>43680797
daemons are laughably easy with just (insert chaos god specific color) and a wash of some sort with some dry brushing you may need other colors for horns/claws/guts
>>
>>43680810

Honestly I doubt they are pissed as upgrade kits fly off the shelves, it's only mk iv armor in plastic, more people get into 30k and now they can focus on all the primarchs and special characters as well as vehicles, titans and all the other factions present.

Pic of it with the piece on? Also nice paintjob so far, but the gap and mould lines on his gun are pretty glaring, I won't suggest greenstuffing or gluing due to the paint being on, but maybe slap a piece of armor on it to cover it up and look more Ogryn-like.

Sup guys,

I was sick over the weekend so didn't make as much progress as I wanted, but here is a little tidbit of where I am currently at. Basically got the helmet further along on the Sorcerer, have done a couple more rounds on the gold portions of the other models, have the bolters painted and attached, and the Aspiring Sorcerer's backpack has been pinned on.

That's a little sneak peak of some terrain I am working on as well. I will make a lot of progress tomorrow.

I'm getting into the hobby, and I bought a Hammerhead and Devilfish.
I noticed I really needed Anti-Vehicle firepower, but I'm broke for now.
I have the spare Skyray missile turret from the Hammerhead kit I bought, and I wanted to know if it's possible to convert a Devilfish into a Skyray, and more precisely, what parts will I need (Excluding the turret, which I already have) to fully complete the conversion.
It sems like the drones are different, but I don't know about the rest.

Also, goddamn I feel insecure with all those fucking beautiful paintings and conversions in this thread.
>>
Any "beginner" kits online (on, like, Amazon or something) that would be good to purchase, starting out? Maybe one for brushes and one for paints? I'd rather not buy a million and seven different colors, even though I plan on doing a few wildly different kits.

wash that red, and then highlight the edging bro
>>
>>43684155
I already applied Nuln oil, but it gets kind of dirty, that makes it a bit off-looking. I washed them, and re-applied a bit of red paint to hide the oil that wasn't on details. Should I re-apply some, then?
Also, I already tried to highlight a bit, but I guess I did it way too lightly. I'm afraid to fuck up the entire mini if I do it wrong.
But thanks!
>>
>>43684587
I would try running something darker in the cracks then Nuln oil. Try watering down some actual black paint, or a darker red. The photo makes it hard to notice any highlights with that flash washing out all the color.

>>43683871
The only real difference between the Devilfish and the HH/Skyray is the chin mounted burst cannon vs. twin linked burst cannons. All of them can also take gun drones or a twin-linked smart missile system on the sides as well. Easiest thing to do if you want to be able to swap between devilfish and skyray is magnatize the burst cannon and run gundrones/SMS on the sides.

Well, that would involve immediate and consistent training from the first day. And as they are rescues, they may have already developed bad habits. Your first potential mistake could be that you think a cat cannot be trained. If you can avoid that, and your SO (or whoever you mean by "we") has to help. That is, you have to stop your cats from getting on tables and such immediately and consistently or not at all. Growing up, none of our cats ever thought to jump up on a desk or table. That would be just out of the question. But I know other people who think it's cute putting them up on counters and everything when they are young and then you have a filthy cat on everything right after walking in it's own shit and piss sand.

Otherwise, you need to have a room with a door and/or your work station needs to be able to be broken down and you need a closable display shelf for your models. For instance, you can make a small paint station by wrapping a small plastic cutting board in newspaper and using rolled up pieces and tape to make a little trough to hold a number of paints along the top of it. Then you just need your brushed and water out more or less and all of that can be put into a drawer or rubbermaid storage shelf thing (with drawers as well).

I've had this cutting board for like 10 years.

The shapes and size don't exactly look ideal for painting miniatures.

If you're just painting 28mm or heroic scale you want round brushes in sizes 2-0, 4 is handy for basecoating. Bear in mind brush sizes are in no way standard, so they vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

What's your budget?
>>
>>43686904
>>43686970
well my cats are not even 1 year old, very curious, especially one who have to sniff, touch and play with every single small object he spots. He also tends to jump on my laps, and I'm afraid he'll do this when I'll be painting some details and fuck everything up. Same with leaving models to dry.
Since I'm using vallejos and wet pallette, I fear he'll dip his nose or paw into paints and leave gorillion of marks on furniture.
>>
>>43686970
And yes, that is an old Scorpion Green that is 90% full ;) It's funny how hated it used to be and how sought after it is now. It will come in handy for the green glowing eyes I will be attempting on my Thousand Sons today. That and the magenta-crimson crushed velvet robes hopefully.

I plan on attempting to emulate this:

and this:

And then snow from here using option (H) "Water Effects and modeling snow" (which he labels correctly in the images, but as a second (G) in the right up following the relevant picture - just a heads up to avoid confusion):

>>
>>43686987
Well, I really just thought about replacing some brushes because no one in this country seemingly sells brush soap, and I heard from anons that WN are really good brushes. Mostly it'll go on my wh/40k minis, but a good larger drybrush wouldn't go amiss if I want to make some Frostgrave scenery.
>>
>>43687072
Yeah, I'm gonna have to second this. They'll probably leave it alone/be disinterested in a few years.
>>
>>43687077
The higher end are, sure. For the lower end brushes it doesn't really matter what you get.

Try going to a fine arts store for some brush soap. If you can find some, get a W&N series 7 miniature size 1 and a couple size 2 and 4 synthetics or cheap natural hair brushes for non-precision work.

The professional sable watercolor brushes are cheaper but still high quality sables, they should still be cared for.

FYI these images aren't so clear that shrinking these to 25% of their original resolution will not change anything we are seeing and your images will be like 200-800KB instead of 2.5MB.

This can be done with free software, and your computer likely already comes with something pre installed that takes 3 clicks to do.

My only critique, and its not if that gun is magnetized, is that you went with one str 8 chance for a melta over 6 str 7 shots that potentially hit rear armor anyway.
>>
>>43688331
>and its not if that gun is magnetized
It is thankfully. I don't know why as I never get to play anyway. I have bought Kauyon but haven't really read it yet, so went with the option of magnetising everything, including the head so I can get inside cockpit easily, rather than getting mad later when I realise I messed up... again.

>>
>>43688382
Use little make up applicators to put camo black brown sorta like sponge method, but a smaller scale. Then use a brush to apply a little bolt gun metal to certain areas to make them look a bit more worn.

Glad you like it, I thought I may have went overboard. The biggest bonus is it requires no real skill which is exactly how I like it.

Right, so I'm putting together a list that involves 8 of this bastards, but I absolutely hate the floating base, because the stands break.

Anyone have any suggestions for alternate legs to use with these dudes? I looked around at quad legs and didn't find anything, but I'd settle for a regular pair of legs as well.

>>
>>43688515
Triach Stalker is too big, I think. Might be a good choice for some other projects though.

Dune Crawler might work, though the legs look too spread out for a 50mm base. I'll have to get a kit and see how it goes.

I've also considered using the plain old Sentinel legs, but that's something I need to experiment with as well.

So I am no expert, and you may in fact know better than me but basically the best advise is to play around with PSI and thinning of paint on paper until you can get a smooth application.

I find buying a proper airbrush thinner helps too as you can really make your paints transparent for smooth blends without just ending up with paint running down your model.

Airbrushing is one of those things that looks really really easy until you actually pick one up.

Either work in a closed door room, or have a spray bottle with water and a little bit of lemon juice in it always at hand's reach. If the cat jumps on your desk IMMEDIATELY spray him and say an authoritative NO. Lemonjuice water is a guarantee for cats to stop going where you spray them with.

>>
>>43689837

The "bland and flat" look is actually what you want for a good Tron look... which you actually achieved. Kudos. It's a hard thing to do.

What you need, is some additional focal points other than the cockpit. Paint the gems exactly like you did the cockpit (which needs a final point highlight imho) and add some glow to the gun tips. That's pretty much all it needs. Keep the blacks flat like it is.

Gonna look badass.

I'm currently doing a mockup in photoshop to see if what I'm saying makes sense.
>>
>>43689837
Paint the jewels, son. Make them dark, but pick colours that complement the blue/orange contrast you've got going.

Also, put some shading on the blue cannons and some highlights on the black. Just be careful and go up in colour slowly.

Though I like your glow effects and the cockpit is really, really nice. Nice and clean, everything.

I love the reds and blues you added. Yellow not so much. I think I'll keep it flat, and 'ardcoat the gems for a shine. Still not sure about the engine glow. I don't want it to turn out like pic related. There's too much blue there.
>>
>>43690135
I'd second this design. Orange glow and highlight on the blue guns makes for great contrast, and the orange gems make for an interesting counterpoint to the blue lights. Just some subtle edge highlighting, and possibly orange exhaust if you want to continue the two-colour scheme.
Also, this anon forgot some of the gems. Some might be a bit too close, but paint the ones you feel needs a bit of contrast.

Also, to the original glowtank anon, I'd recommend you do some simple mock-ups before starting to paint to help planning the colours. It's pretty helpful.

Or the darkest grey with 3-4 washes of black. That is what I am doing with my Grey Knights that use the original GW black colour scheme. But here I am going for a very dark grey instead, and would likely do another layer of black wash for you. This guy isn't done yet.

copy paste form guide I've found, but can't put link here for some reason

1. After priming the model in white, I basecoat it with GW's Averland Sunset. I like this color, but sometimes it'll go on a little unevenly, take your time with it. For my Assault Marines, Dreadnought, and Storm Raven I'm planning on putting this layer down with an airbrush.

2. To ensure an even, solid coverage, I highlight the model with a mix of GW Averland Sunset and VGC Sun Yellow.

3. The next highlighting stage is with VGC Sun Yellow.

4. The final highlighting stage is a mix of VGC Sun Yellow and VMC Pale Sand (I love Pale Sand, a fantastic color that gets used all the time).

>>43692624
After all the highlighting is complete, it's on to the shading. This is where I was in unfamiliar territory as the vast bulk of my painting has always been working up from the shade to the highlight, but it was certainly fun learning how to work this way.

5. I began shading with a mix of GW Averland Sunset and GW Skrag Brown, adding more Skrag Brown as I went along. This stage is actually about three or four passes, adding more depth each time.

6. This stage is for adding the final depth shade, a thinned wash or two of VGC Charred Brown. I paid particular attention to the corners of the shoulder pad and the rear of the greaves.

7. And the next step is to tidy up everything with some VGC Black.

Sup,

So, I spray it with Krylon ColorMaster Metallic Silver Spray Paint+Primer.

It is essential that you shake this can for a full 60 seconds, or more. No less.
Humidity must be below 50%. The lower the better. Temperature, ideally 5-20 C (~40-70 F). Wind should be minimal and just use bursts of wind as an opportunity to shake the can some more.
Spray from about 12" away and have the model(s) on a stick so you can rotate the model instead of the can.
Shake often.
This way you will get a nice thin smooth base coat. I recommend this over priming black and then hand painting Runefang Steel (mithril silver) as the Krylon is a much brighter and shinier silver, and you just get a smoother more consistent coverage on the model compared to doing a metallic with a brush over larger surfaces.

Next, I do a layer of Asurmen Blue Wash thinned 5:3 with Lahmian Medium (or just buy an acrylic matte medium at a craft store). As this wash is discontinued and the new Shades are not the same product, your mileage may vary with that product line. I am told that the current Army Painter Inks are the same product that GW used to use for their discontinued Wash line.

I then do a very lite dry brushing of Runefang Steel over all the blue areas. I do not dry brush after later layers of Asurmen Blue

Repeat the Asurmen Blue Wash stage, again thinning it with your Matte Medium. BTW, get some cheap disposable plastic pipettes at the craft store to help with accurate mixing and the conservation of your paints.

Let that layer fully dry. This is a good project to do a number of models at once.

Repeat the Asurmen Blue Wash stage, thinned again with Matte Medium.

I stop here, but continue onward if you like.

Now touch up all surrounding areas you don't want to be blue and continue with your model.

I hope that helps.

Basecoat with a dark charcoal, shade with pure black and highlight with base + grey.

If you place the base and highlight next to each other you should be able to tell them apart if there's a clear line, but they shouldn't be massively different.
>>
>>43690866

Clever. That's actually how I did the base lighting on the scales of >>43678436

I basecoated black, sprayed blue liberally in both light and shadows, then glazecoated with yellow with the airbrush on where the light hits for a beautiful rich green that translates to blue in the shade. Then I did the highlights by brush.

I know I put some red somewhere in-between those stages but I forgot where.

Yeah, there's gonna be gubbinz. There will be four vehicles total, 2 trukks, 2 buggies. One of each trakked and wheeled. The way I want to do it with gubbinz and gunz is have the mounts magnetised and standardised, so I can make just one of each, and then he can swap them between the vehicles to have fun with various combinations. Stuff like reinforced rams and extra armor is gonna be more vehicle specific though.

That looks really good! The layout doesn't look very natural nor super effective, but it looks badass.

Might I suggest, for your light box using a curved sheet instead? Get a piece of bristle board (white &/or blackl) and cut it to size. Make it about 40% longer than it is tall and have it flat on the front bottom and curve up the back wall. This crreates a natural gradient on the colour backdrop and breaks up and edge lines in the background.

disregard the green text. I apparently had leftover text in the box I didin't notice for something I decided not to post.

Get a wash in those armor cracks to really make them pop. You dont need to slather it all over the mini if you like the color already, but just get a small-ish brush and drip it in those cracks to bring out the depth.

A nice bit of brown and you can have the basis for a three tone camo scheme, a scheme I go for with my SS armour.

Did you model your color scheme off of Optimus Prime? Cause that's what immediately comes to mind with the bigger suits.

So, once I've finished off my last two space marines, before I texture/paint the bases underneath do I spray this? What do I do with the 'ardcoat?

Alright, well I have a serious question that needs some kind of answers. Right now I'm looking to find a suitable head for a Space Marine that includes an Eye Patch and some Hair. Right now I'm wanting to make some tactical sergeants with a Metal Gear theme(The Chapter is Raptors, so Sneaky Marines). Does anyone know where I can find head pieces to start for a project like this?

Got a Stormtalon and Darktalon fuselage off Ebay for about $3 each, currently trying to stick the longer darktalon tail onto the stormtalon fuselage to hopefully make a less derpy looking stormtalon.

Also gonna build a smaller chin turret using the little assault cannons from landspeeders or whatever instead of the giant silly ones that come standard.

Can anyone tell me where these wings come from? Reverse image search just brings me to an article that calls them M.A.S. wings which is useless at finding whatever company makes them.

Space wolf heads. Those are the best marine with hair faces in the whole model line. case in point is my tyrants legion big boss, I just green stuffed an eye patch and a bandanna over a space wolf head. i believe it was a space wolf terminator.

Leman russ Vanquisher, just finished the treads.

I was trying to go for a 'naked steel with rust/dirt caked into the crevices' look. I basecoated Gunmetal, covered it in Smokey Ink, then drybrushed Gunmetal again.
