Bai Ze was a mythical being encountered by the Yellow Emperor of China. The creature taught him about all 11,520 types of supernatural beings from all over the planet and how to overcome their hauntings and attacks. Unfortunately, the book was lost to the sands of time.

What sort of tips would you think were included?

So assuming the book was real, was their really 11520 types of spooky critters?

Or did he just pull that number out of his ass?

I can seriously imagine some fugly old Chinaman telling his scribes to write some funky ass names down like "He-Who-Eats-Toes". Imagine the bullshit amount of time taken to write those fucking names down, let alone categorize it, describe it, and draw a pic.

Fuck Bai Ze probably was the first troll for the chinese, giving fake ass monster names.

Alright your highness, this is an "Imperial Parasite" and two "Manworm" attendants. The latter grow inside the stomachs of men who have gotten away blameless for grievous crimes. I guess your sins really do eat at you from the inside. When Manworms infest a given area, they're usually disguised as humans, and only operate at night so as to make the disguise stronger. In any case, when enough of them build up in a certain area, they will drop a cluster of bulbs from the tree onion into the bottom of a great pit, and then begin to fill that hole up with the corpses of their victims (the more sinful the victims, the better).

After a few weeks and a lot of prayer, the Imperial Parasite will ascend from the bottom of her rotting pile. These apparitions are always female and have gentle, motherly aspects; but they are an unholy terror. They travel about freely within human settlements, giving parasites to any man or animal with the smallest of touches, thus producing more Manworms and a host of other dark parasites. Once the sickness has taken over, the Imperial Parasite takes her place at the head of the kingdom, with intention to propagate their kind across the face of the earth.

Common defensive measures include clean food preparation practices, diligent prayer against evil, and fire. Lots of fire.

Or the book was actually stolen by a supernatural creature to keep all that knowledge away from mankind.

Your excellency, this creature is known as a "Warwood". It is a beast born of the destoryed war machines of bloody battlefields. When a suit of armor, a mass of weapons, or most typically a Siege weapon of some kind is destroyed and soaked in the blood of fallen warriors for a period of three months, the weapon(s) will come alive, bending themselves into a facsimile of man and weapon made one.

Their existance is tragic, they often roam around, seaking the kin of the blood soaked into the wood and metal. Invariably the constructs react violently upon meeting the blood kin, or sense the blood of those who inflicted the violent end which spawned them. They wield their weaponlike forms with deadly efficacy, and it is unwise to do battle with one.

To cleanse the creature, one must perform funerary rites to those slain in combat as soon as possible, treating the fallen with honor and respect. Active Warwoods can be turned away with offerings of peace, burning incense and war memorials.

Perhaps it was a hit-list for Bai Ze's enemies and one of them found out about it. There could be many more than just 11,520 out there.

How do we know that one big bad monster/evil spirit didn't steal the book to keep mankind from protecting themselves?

Always aim for the head unless it has more than one.
