Lewes.jpg

It is 752 years since the Battle of Lewes, one of two main battles of the conflict known as the Second Barons' War. It took place at Lewes in Sussex, England. It marked the high point of the career of Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, and made him the "uncrowned King of England".

Henry III was an unpopular monarch due to his autocratic style, displays of favouritism and his refusal to negotiate with his barons. The barons eventually imposed a constitutional reform known as the Provisions of Oxford upon Henry that called for a thrice-yearly meeting led by Simon de Montfort to discuss matters of government. Henry sought to escape the restrictions of the provisions and applied to Louis IX of France to arbitrate in the dispute. Louis agreed with Henry and annulled the provisions. Montfort was angered by this and rebelled against the King along with other barons in the Second Barons' War.

The war was not initially openly fought, each side toured the country to raise support for their army. By May the King's force had reached Lewes where they intended to halt for a while to allow reinforcements to reach them. The King encamped at St. Pancras Priory with a force of infantry, but his son, Prince Edward (later King Edward I), commanded the cavalry at Lewes Castle 500 yards (460 m) to the north. De Montfort approached the King with the intention of negotiating a truce or failing that to draw him into open battle. The King rejected the negotiations and de Montfort moved his men from Fletching to Offam Hill, a mile to the north-west of Lewes, in a night march that surprised the royalist forces.

The royalist army was up to twice the size of de Montfort's. Henry held command of the centre, with Prince Edward, William de Valence, 1st Earl of Pembroke, and John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey, on the right; and Richard, 1st Earl of Cornwall, and his son, Henry of Almain, on the left.

The barons held the higher ground, overlooking Lewes, and had ordered their men to wear white crosses as a distinguishing emblem. De Montfort split his forces into four parts, giving his son, Henry de Montfort command of one quarter; Gilbert de Clare with John FitzJohn and William of Montchensy another; a third portion consisting of Londoners was placed under Nicholas de Segrave whilst de Montfort himself led the fourth quarter with Thomas of Pelveston.

The baronial forces commenced the engagement with a surprise dawn attack on foragers sent out from the royalist forces. The King then made his move. Edward led a cavalry charge against Seagrave's Londoners, placed on the left of the baronial line, that caused them to break and run to the village of Offham. Edward pursued his foe for some four miles, leaving the King unsupported. Henry was forced to launch an attack with his centre and right divisions straight up Offham Hill into the baronial line which awaited them at the defensive. Cornwall's division faltered almost immediately but Henry's men fought on until compelled to retreat by the arrival of de Montfort's men that had been held as the baronial reserve.

The King's men were forced down the hill and into Lewes where they engaged in a fighting retreat to the castle and priory. Edward returned with his weary cavalrymen and launched a counterattack but upon locating his father was persuaded that, with the town ablaze and many of the King's supporters having fled, it was time to accept de Montfort's renewed offer of negotiations. The Earl of Cornwall was captured by the barons when he was unable to reach the safety of the priory and, being discovered in a windmill, was taunted with cries of "Come down, come down, thou wicked miller."
>>
>>47248490
The King was forced to sign the so-called Mise of Lewes. Though the document has not survived, it is clear that Henry was forced to accept the Provisions of Oxford, while Prince Edward remained a hostage of the barons. This put Montfort in a position of ultimate power, which would last until Prince Edward's escape, and Montfort's subsequent defeat at the Battle of Evesham in August 1265.

The streets of Lewes were lined with dead and wounded, and most of the latter would also die. The abbot of St. Pancras priory put the number of dead at 2,700, most of them peasants. In 1846, during construction of a railway line through the site of St. Pancras priory, excavators discovered a mass of human bones in a well about 18 feet below ground level. There were enough bones to fill 13 freight cars — probably well over 1,000 skeletons. The bones were taken from the site and unloaded a short distance away, where they were used as fill for an embankment then under construction. Whether they were the remains of Henry’s or Simon’s men is unknown.

Lewes is interesting in that it and Evesham were the only pitched battles to be fought by English armies in the mid-13th century. It provides medieval wargamers with a fantastic chance for a High Middle Ages clash on a relatively even footing, with a lot of colour and gaming potential.

I'll try not to over-spam this, but once again, if there are any gamers around the South-West of the UK, there's a Jutland Naval Wargame being held in two weeks' time.

Just to sweeten the deal, I've spoken to the organiser (a serving RN officer), and he's told me the following:

-It's at a Royal Navy reserve station, and (as well as opening up the subsidised bar) they will bring out their Jutland memorabilia and be on hand to discuss the battle's history
-It's command-based, with the Admirals on each side in a separate room and communicating with their divisional commanders by signal

We had something similar happening in our first test game of BA tank war using a set of demo minis; 3 Shermans vs a Panther with Barkmann's special rules.

There were multiple cases of one player (the FLGS owner) missing anything-but-a-one shots where the tanks were within a couple of inches of each other.
A few less-likely shots also failed, but that wasn't quite as frustrating.

probably only useful in a campaign setting. so you can use it to plan eleborate traps for the enemy.

it really reminds me of ravages of time, a really good hawaian sharkskin-stitching about the romance of the three kingdoms. dont now about the historical accuracys, but the startegic planing of the maincast is very elaborate and fun to read.
>>
>>47254539
I dunno, you can make stuff like that work for one-off games. For example there's a Through the Mud and the Blood scenario set in 1914 which features changes to movement as a result of the Belgian floods.

Aerosans are so fucking cool, like a classic example of that insane tech the Soviets loved so much. Do any WW2 systems model them? I know a wheeled variant popped up once in a VBCW game I read about, using Bolt Action rules.
>>
>>47264964
Oh fuck yes, I forgot about the aerosani. definitely including it in the latest ostfront soviet list.

Essentially a very light vehicle with a machine gun. It will get raped by the lightest wind, but could be decent for recon and taking out the odd infantry or light vehicles.

It wouldn't be able to move through cover like a normal vehicle though, would be limited to open ground, and battles would be assumed to be on snow when you're using it...

Nice one anon. Pretty sure we have it buried in the folders somewhere but it certainly won't hurt to bring it to the attention of anyone who has not read it. I have a battered copy of the 1981 edition lying around, one of the treasured members of my wargaming library. It's a real time capsule now, written when hex & counter was fucking huge. The section on computer games is amazing in hindsight; it features Taipan and the original text-only versions of Flight Simulator and Temple of Apshai. Also of course there's the pocket wargame "Patton at Metz" and Jim Dunnigan's personal-eye-view of the history of early wargaming. It must be hard for him to look at wargaming today, especially the computer applications, and not scream I Told You So every five minutes.

Does anyone have any information on the paint schemes for the deck structures of British destroyers circa 1915? Massie's "Castles of Steel" says that they're all grey (holystoned decks aside, obviously), and the capital ships are definitely all grey along their superstructures, but there's this model of the Acheron-class HMS Jackal in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich that has grey superstructure with black funnels and deck structures (pic related), and I can't imagine that the museum would fuck that up. The only date on the model is 1911 (which is the Jackal's launch date), and I can't find out if this is a 1911-era scheme or if it's representative of a wartime scheme.

I have 2 flotillas of Panzerschiffe DD's sitting in front of me and I'd really like to not fuck this up.
>>
>>47278586

All gray. Once WW1 started, Briitish destroyers were in the same charcoal gray as all the rest of the ships, but after December of 1914, ships were painted instead in a medium gray due to a shortage of pigments. L-class destroyers, specifically, were built and immediately painted black in 1913, but by the middle of 1915 all of them had been repainted gray.

Do note that this is for "generic" WW1 painting. Technically speaking, British destroyers went through several repaintings of shades of gray throughout the war (IIRC there were 5 different shades), each being progressively lighter than the last. But if you just paint the DD's in something like Vallejo Neutral Gray or an old GW Codex Gray, you'll be good for essentially the entire war; paint faded so fast under North Sea conditions that almost any shade of gray between charcoal and medium gray is perfectly acceptable.

If you need a cite, check here: https://thomo.coldie.net/2008/02/20/colour-schemes-of-ww1-warships/

Why did it do this?

>>47280453
I have a black wash, but I haven't found it very useful. I think I need a lighter one, or a brown one for faces.

>>47280443
Hmm you're right, that pic looks bad because the brown from the chin-strap and the ammo belt have had some brown go between them onto the shirt. I'll fix it up. Aside from that I'm pretty happy so far.
>>
>>47280481
Maybe invest in Army Painter dips, the brown one is quite popular for getting stuff that looks half decent and is quick and easy.

>>
>>47280551
If it makes his face look bad one of three things is wrong

A. You're retardded and dont do a light coat of flesh tone back over

B. Youre putting the wash on while the flesh paint isnt fully dry

C. you're using too much fucking wash
>>
>>47280572
>You're retardded and dont do a light coat of flesh tone back over
It's A. No one ever taught me how to paint, I thought it went paint then wash then basing.
>>
>>47280594
Paint. Wash. Paint again in a thinner/lighter coat over the raised parts of the figure. Highlight if you want.Touch ups. Base.
>>
>>47280606
>Highlight if you want.Touch ups.
While you're doing the tutorial... Is highlighting touchin' the sticky outy parts of the model (nose, knees, etc) with lighter colours? And touch ups fixing where you've fucked it?
>>
>>47280572
Black wash doesn't go well with faces FYI. Dark brown is good for it, black definitely not.

>>

Stalingrad is yet another one of those avalon hill games where it all comes down to math crunching and finding as many 3-1 odds shifts attacks as you can.(alot of early AH games were this way....1914, Afrika Korps, the list goes on and on)

people seem to love the game and say its a classic but I find it to not to be.

its one of those games that old crusty grogs have spent huge amount of time trying to figure out the 'right' set up and plans to make. literally spending years to figure out the 'puzzle' of the game. If thats the case with your old man..then there is nothing you can do. he will beat you.

that being said there have been HUGE amounts of articles written on the game. head over to BGG and look over the forums to get some ideas on what you can do

Yeah, no problem. Here's pics of the ships I've been working on recently. The project is to have the entire OOBs for both the Pursuit of the Goeben (1914) and the Battle of Dogger Bank (1915). Both of those were heavily slanted towards battlecruiser actions. Once these are done, I'm going to start working (very, very slowly) on building the entire German and British OOBs for Jutland. No way I'll have it done for the 100th anniversary, obviously, but it'll still be nice to have the dreadnoughts available.

Anyway, I think this is going to be a 7-picture dump.

7/7 - Finally, here's the German Battlecruisers. Before anyone says it, yes, I'm aware the Blucher was technically an armored cruiser, but she sailed with the rest of the BCs of I Scouting Group for Dogger Bank and the British classified her as a BC, so her rightful place is with the rest of Hipper's ships.

The bottom two ships were the first two ships I did for this project; Goeben and Breslau. As such, the current paint mix has changed slightly, and I've learned some lessons about not staining the nameplates. I'll redo these at some point.

It's from GHQ, while all of the other cruisers and DDs are from Panzerschiffe. A GHQ ship is about $14, while the ship from Panzerschiffe is between $1.50-2.50. When you've got to buy 30 destroyers at a time, that adds up.

The reason that single cruiser is from GHQ while all the rest are from Panzerschiffe is because when I was first getting into WW1-era naval gaming, I just wanted to get enough to run the Goebn pursuit - on the German side, that meant the Goeban and the cruiser Breslau (Magdeburg-class). It made sense to buy those two models from GHQ at the same time I bought the 3 British battlecruisers It wasn't until later that I started collecting models for Dogger Bank and learned about Panzerschiffe. I realized that there was another Magdeburg serving at the time: the SMS Straslund, and I had to either buy a second GHQ model and have the 1 cruiser more detailed than the rest of the squadron, or I could buy a Panzerschiffe Magdeburg model and have the two ships of the same class not match when next to each other. I could live with the former route better, so both the Magdeburgs are GHQ.

A friend of mine at my society recently wanted to try some naval war games, particularly WW1-present (none age of sail or classicals essentially) What game would be best to do this with? Which manufacturers for models? I know paper based ones exist but owning the models is a big part of it for us to.

A single game for everything WW1-present? I don't think there is one; the difference between 1942-era naval combat and 1972-era is absolutely tremendous, and I don't think that a single game can reasonably encompass both.

IMO, your best best is to use General Quarters 3 for WW2, and General Quarters: Fleet Action Imminent for WW1. They're very similar, though optimized to make their particular wars work best. Then choose something for modern naval combat that you like (there *is* a set of Modern General Quarters, but it's unfinished and I don't actually like it much). The three modern naval games I'd suggest are: "Harpoon," "Shipwreck" and "Subs and Sams". Harpoon is the super-high-detail simulation ju jour, if you want that sort of game. The other two are much more abstracted, but much easier to actually play.

Note that I don't generally recommend Seakrieg for WW1-2 gaming because it tends to work best when one player is playing one ship. While that sounds good for learning games, in practice, I've found players generally prefer playing a half-flotilla or a division (about 4 ships) even when starting out completely new. This scale of play is right in GQ's wheelhouse.

GQ3 and GQ3:FAI are in the OP mediafire folder (I supplied the latter).
So is Harpoon 3 (Harpoon 4 is the newest, but 3 will generally suffice).
Subs and Sams is a free ruleset here: http://www.wrg.me.uk/PHIL/pcb.html
Shipwreck is OOP an not in the mediafire folder, but shouldn't be too hard to find.

Finally, I will editorialize and say that I don't think modern naval wargaming is much fun (especially post 1980-era). "Side A locates the enemy and attacks, Side B uses counter-measures. Missiles hit, ships sink, survivors counter attack, Etc." Terrain tends to matter very little; whomever wins the scouting phase and can locate the OPFOR first tends to win. Which is REALISTIC...but not fun for prolonged gaming experiences. YMMV.

Didn't want to play the whole era, just one part of it. Having asked, WW2 interests him most and I can agree. Thanks for the advice on system: where would we get minitures for the games however?

GHQ is the best, hands-down. Also the most expensive.

I'd choose a scale, first. The usual ones for naval wargaming are 1/700, 1/1200, 1/2400 (or 1/3000)**, and 1/6000. Obviously, as you get smaller, finding spaces to play gets easier. As a reference, in 1/2400 scale rules, you generally get weapon ranges of 1cm=100 yards, which means that naval guns with ranges of 35,000 yards can begin firing at a target 11 *feet* away (although they won't usually start hitting with regularity until you reach 5-8 feet). Naval wargames require a lot of space.

GHQ, Panzerschiffe, and Warweb are your best best in 1/2400. 1/3000 is Navwar (good luck ordering from them). Scale Creep Minis are the 1/6000 provider of choice.

**1/3000 is really a UK scale, while US manufacturers use 1/2400.

GHQ and Panzerschiffe supply common scales. 1/2400 is what most people seem to prefer, although some like 1/3000 as well.
NEA posted some examples of Panserschiffe and GHQ stuff earlier for a good idea of what that will look like.

War at Sea is 1/1800, but getting minis is hit or miss even with a large shapeways community dedicated to that scale. If Mongoose ever actually releases their Victory at Sea 2.0 ruleset, there should be more options for 1/1800 since that's the scale they're supposedly gonna go with. Unless you get really stuck on the idea of big ships (which I was in part because I got started in naval games because of B5 ACTA which had some huge models), I'd recommend one of the more common scales.

Do you know of any construction rules for converting ships from raw stats to game stats for GQ3? I don't mind paying $20 bucks for my French or Italians, but I don't relish the thought of paying over $100 to have records for the USN.

I have seen this book before, also at the library, but the name escapes me at the moment.

Regarding your pic related, these people are real. I had one of them come in to the game store where I worked in college, chew us all out for "selling war and violence to children" and then ask if we had "any games where there's no winners or losers". (We did have one; it's called The Ungame and it fucking sucks).

Not any sort of codified rules, no. I'll go back and look through my GQ resources later tonight to make sure.

Using thinned paint for a wash can work out ok but it's much more difficult to manage. A proper wash is ink+matte medium+flow improver, so it behaves a certain way on the mini and dries with a certain finish which are difficult (but not wholly impossible) to replicate with watered paint.

Generally, textured surfaces like fur or chainmail will take a thinned paint wash better than flat cloth or smooth Armour surfaces, where it tends to dry very splotchy.

For deep crevices, like folds in cloth or facial definition, you can apply the thinned paint right into the crevices (with a small brush and steady hand) and it'll look better than an all-over wash style application. Thinned black paint is also just about as good as a wash for blacklining

Bottom line, washes give you more potential if you're going for a high quality paintjob, and are also easier to use for a simpler "tabletop standard", if your heart is set on thinned paint I'd suggest testing it on one model and allowing it to dry completely so you can get a sense of what you'll be working with. If you aren't careful and just smear it all over the place you can easily get gummed up details
>>
>>47280594

Also, basecoat/block Colours>wash>basing is actually a fairly common method for "tabletop standard", mass-painting of Rand and file dudes, but it also usually looks like shit.

The army painter dip that the other guy suggested comes in paint buckets and is meant to optimize a basecoat>dip>base>matte varnish method to get tabletop standard figs that don't look terrible, so if you just want a passable, fully painted army ASAP, might be worth ordering online

I've been painting 64 Macedonian phalangites and 40 hoplites to what I consider a display standard (though I'll still use em on the tabletop) since Christmas and I have about 20 of each done, so it's definitely a big trade-off between speed and quality, which methods you go with

Check out /wip/ generals if you want to go the high quality route

Pursuant to naval wargaming, is there a website out there at which I could research "weather by date"?

I'm looking at putting together an alt-history scenario wherein von Ingenhol actually has the balls to try and send Hipper to interdict the movement of the British Expeditionary Force to the continent. At that time, the Grand Fleet was moving to Scapa Flow for their "distant blockade" strategy, so the bulk of the Grand Fleet wasn't escorting the troop carriers and weren't in any position to intercept Hipper's battlecruisers if he came out to stomp on the BEF. Knowing what the weather was like in the Strait of Dover (where the ship had to sail through to reach continental port) from August 15-17th, 1914, would be very helpful.

Met Office information is only monthly that far back (I guess that they use it for looking at climate trends).

Ship's logs have been scanned. I looked up Jupiter (in Devonport, Plymouth) and now Albion (around Portland in the channel), Implacable (patrolling the channel), Chester etc. for those dates. They suggest that it was nice and calm, about force 2-3 ENE.

I can't sight read Imperial pressure and temperature on sight, unfortunately, but it looks like pleasant late summer conditions in the channel. The b and bc near the force and direction is cloud cover, and again that looks lovely at 25-75%. Perfect for steaming up the channel and sinking Tommy Atkins before he can begin his continental holiday.

The only other thing I can think of would be to try and find the records for RN shore installations.

Why are you posting about it in this thread?
>>
>>47313035

Ha, that's an easy one.

http://navwar.co.uk/nav/

To order, you have to download and fill out their order form. Then you have to mail it to the UK, wait for it to be processed and for them to acknowledge it. THEN they'll send you an invoice. Then you have to send back a check drawn upon only - and they mean ONLY - a British bank, in pounds Sterling. Then they'll ship your stuff.

Oh, and they only check their mail and do work for about 4 hours/week.
>>
>>47313147
Yeah, I guess you can interpret them as "all losers" games.

Which is something you would want if you want to ward off crotchgoblins from war.

I think I'm starting to feel, personally, that while military history is awesome and wargames are even better, war is not something I would ever want to ever partake in.
