Planescape General and Q&A
Discuss Planescape and the Great Wheel here, whether the original AD&D 2e version, the 3.X version, the 4e version (yes, it exists in 4e, down to the baernaloths, the yugoloths, the Heart of Darkness, Maeldur et Kavurik, Tenebrous, Pelion, and the Last Word all being canon as of Dragon #417), the 5e version, or your own original blend.
I am exceedingly well-lanned on Planescape canon under a holistic blend of 2e, 3.X, and sometimes even 4e lore. If you have any questions at all about the setting's lore, feel free to ask,...

These threads hardly seem popular. A question, then:
Why do you think Baator and Mechanus invade Mount Celestia so often (as per the Planes of Law monstrous supplement entry for archons), despite the baatezu having better things to fight (e.g. tanar'ri), and despite Mechanus being on such good terms with the seven-peaked mountain that there are modrons all the way up in the *fifth* layer's city of Empyrea as per the same boxed set?
Wonderful setting, but sadly WotC doesn't have anyone on staff that knows it in depth enough to handle it well in 5e, especially when they're seemingly hellbent on incorporating some of the most special of 4e special snowflakes (4e style tieflings all being uniform in appearance and devil-blooded).
Plus they made some boneheaded retcons such as the yugoloths being created by the hags in 5e, with Asmodeus helping out. They don't have anyone willing to fact check and make sure they don't make a hash of prior material when ostensibly they wanted to return...

What are good low-level adventures to run in the setting that don't involve Sigil, and do actually involve visiting the Planes - even if they have to go and get a spell or temporary protection from the elements?
Is the difficulty to DM a LOTR campaign the reason behind D&D success?
And what makes LOTR so hard to DM?
>>44496507
No.
D&D was the first, did it well, and stayed the only serious contender for nearly a decade.
The reason LotR never took off is because of licensing. There's nothing hard to DM about it.
>>44496556
>only serious contender
Why would you say that Runequest was not a serious contender? I don't really know RPG history.
>>44496604
>Runequest
Because, at least in North America, it wasn't. It wasn't advertised in magazines or for sale at stores. Other RPGs started coming out, but that was just never a thing, in the USA. And the USA market has always been the biggest RPG market.
Happy New Years /tg/, lets have a nice worldbuilding thread about the equivalents to BC/AD in your setting. What was *that* event, go into as much detail as you want.
Generally from what I've seen it is the pre- and post- formation of a grand empire that affected the world's economy drastically.
Or some great war doing the same.
A classic for science fiction is Pre and Post-Atomic, where the focal point is 1945. I'm tempted to use that for my setting, but I think I'm going to be boring and use the founding of the Galactic Concord or the reconstruction after the Great Galactic War.
The choice between a Concord calendar and the Reconstruction calendar kind of depends on how bad I want the war to go. I kind of intend for there to be a Reinassance as the great trade lanes are reestablished and the galaxy starts to rebuild. At the same time I don't want the founding of the Concord,...

I use this same thing. Based on a big empire on the continent with annotations based on the POV of the historian since there is no global empire yet..
How exactly do more narrative-driven systems handle combat? Do they deal damage based on numbers, do they have "wound degrees", levels of shit getting real?
I'd assume you mean diceless systems?
There would never be a number value anywhere in the system, so that probably leads to having descriptions of wounds.
>>44496375
no, dice do take place in this question
>>44496385
Fate Accelerated/Core, then?
Take the difference between the Attack and Defense rolls + their relevant Skills/Aspects/Stunts, and this is called Shift.
The Shift, if still a positive value (successful hit), must be "absorbed" by a Stress or Consequence box. When these boxes are full, you're fuckin' outta that fight (you can forfeit sooner to avoid taking Consequences, but...)
Stress is protecting you from the Consequences, so use your Stress boxes first. If you start using...

Is there any good reason to separate "faeries," "nature spirits," and "elementals" in a setting?
Well, elementals also see use as a separate wizardy thing that doesn't have much to do with faeries and nature, at least in D&D (except when it does) and similar.
That being said, I still recall a campaign where my druid tried to communicate with a raging water elemental because I figured it meant that nature was out of balance and would need to be calmed, only to be smashed in the face due to it being a different kind of elemental (the one from the elemental plane of water, summoned by some random asshole to cause assholity). I'm still salty about that...

If your setting is large enough to demand that you not only separate demons from devils but to also include subgroups within demons and devils alongside yugoloths and uncategorized generic fiends, I think it makes sense to go ahead and split those three you mentioned.
Well they come from different planes/realms, so if there's going to be any dimension hopping there's a bit of a distinction.
If not, there are certain spells and abilities (eg druid elemental wildshape) that are going to require a distinction.
As for faeries, the fey realm is one of the more popular backstory stuffers.
What is your idea for your setting?
Elves as the forest dwelling relatives of bats, y/n?
>principly known for eating fruits and sweets
>fond of wine which is just fermented fruit juice
>often live in trees
>keen senses
>canny hunters despite not being traditional carnivores
>pointy ears
>cute
>squeak squeak
Mite b cool?
Personally I prefer goblins for the "bat-like humanoid role." Mainly because it seems more natural for them to have absurd-looking noses, which is pretty much the best reason to have bat-ish people around.
>Elves have had bat ears this whole time
>>44495704
Well, the fruit bats that OP is suggesting that elves evolved from typically don't have the weird sound-focusing nose frills, or at least less prominent ones. So it could be a case of elves being descended from the fruit eaters and goblins being descended from the insectivores.
I know that old WH 40k lore talked about half-eldars, but what about half taus ?
>>44494872
tau didn't exist in old 40k lore
>>44494872
Stop thinking with your dick anon.

You've got wiener-brain, Anon! You've gotta work past it! Be the bigger man!
Happy New Year, /tg/. We made it.

Looking fairly good here.
Rolling for Dwarf's stats.
I'm looking for a (preferably) rules-light system that would allow me to flavor it as a Metal Gear Solid tabletop.
The players would all be footsoldiers or agents of one of the various MGS Organizations (FOX, MSF, Diamond Dogs, FOXHOUND, Philanthropy) which would determine alliance/mission objectives/technology available, and being able to assign bonuses based on the organization would be cool.
Anybody know of a system that would help out here? Doesn't matter if it's anything official or not.
Additionally, some mission objectives would be a welcome method of bumping the thread if you feel like flexing your creativity.
>>44494168
Additionally, a friend referred me to a system called PDQ (Prose-Descriptive Quality) for this idea, but it seemed like it was *too* non-specific when it came to things a character could/couldn't do. The last thing I'm looking for is
>nuthin personnel
>>44494168
/tg/ did one a while back, but I got no clue if it's any good. Do you want me to dig it up?
>>44494168
gurps
Riddle me this /tg/, Is heresy ok when its for the good of the Imperium?
>>44494006
No, but it has to be done anyways.
Didn't the second Batman Begins movie teach you anything?
>>44494006
An invalid concern.
Heresy is never good for the Imperium.
>>44494006
If it's good for the Imperium, it's not heresy.
>the church teaches that goblins and demons share a common ancestor
How does your paladin react?
>>44493935
He falls, he will save his stubby green buddies, even if it means facing the gods themselves
>>44493935
Check the priest's history when it comes to Goblins because this church has a teaching far different from canon.
>>44493935
He doesn't react.
He doesn't hold anything responsible for their parents.
Hey /tg/, I'm putting together a game based in a Pulp/Retro Future setting and I'm looking for inspiration.
I'm looking for art work of Pulp settings, Retro Futurism, Diesel Punk, Noire, B-Movies and other stuff set in the 1930's - 1950's.
About to run an only war campaign and want some ideas on how to enrich the role playing experience.
I was thinking maybe putting some background noises during certain situations such as combat.
Would appreciate some input and different things I can do
>>44492802
are you running it online? btw, at some point a nice idea is to put deserters or smth like that encounter with your team, it will prove that your players are good or are they dumbos or they are playing only war for shooting only.
>>44492802
shitty op not responding to its own thread? u wot
Sorry, and no, we'll be meeting at my place
