1978 World Cup. It was supposed to be our year. We had so many players that were competing and winning at the top of European club football. But the international squad was in disarray; lots of in-fighting and arguments over players' bonuses.
We never even got out the group. Beaten by fucking Peru in our first game, we then dicked about against Iran thinking we'd win comfortably but only drew 1-1. In the final group game we beat Holland, the eventual finalists of the tournament, but only finished 3rd because of Holland's superior goal difference.
It seems silly now, but we had a genuine chance back then to really make a mark on a tournament.

Not a coach error but the biggest Refballage in history. Semi-final France/RFA 1/1 at half time, at 60 min the GK hit Battiston and damaged his vertebrae with some teeth knocked out, he eventually fall into a coma.
The Dutch referee Charles Corver did not give a red card and not even a FK for France but give a goal-kick to RFA. On extra time we manage to take advantage 3/1 but finally RFA score at 3/3. We lost that "game" on penalties with our players thought that Battiston was dead.
