Lmao why? NBA likes making people think its the 2nd most popular sport in America but in numbers and reality it isn't.

I find this extremely hard to believe
>>

Hockey is big on the east coast and midwest and those huge cities definitely have more people than Kentucky, North Carolina and whoever the fuck else cares about NCAAB.
>>
>>69314521
these are leagues not sports

polling asking about sports, not leagues, is far more accurate and telling
>>
>>69314688
>>69314729
You have to look at the question. It's primary sport only. You can imagine that there's more people who care about hockey above the other sports, but there's fewer people who care about NCAAB the most when NCAAF and NBA are available.
>>
>>69314729
Everyone loves NCAAB, it's just it's mainly filler.

The only professional sports active during NCAAB big deal, march madness is
>Basedball(Spring training so not fully)
>NBA
>NHL

That leaves the NFL and college football fans needing something to watch during off season, so a lot of people get hyped for their own college team during march madness making it seem like the nation loves college basketball a whole lot, when reality it's filler for both kinds of football fans, and MLB fans to a point while their sport is currently inactive.

It's like a secondary favorite.

Here are sports and a more recent poll.

This shit about soccer "growing" in the US is only something the media made up in order to get more to watch it. If it's growing it's at a snail pace and can't even beat fucking NASCAR.
>>
Nah it's going to stay niche for awhile but it will definitely survive and grow a little bit. Baseball is fine.
Basketball ironically gets WAY higher TV ratings than hockey but the attendance averages are both at 17k and the total attendances are both at 21 million. Hockey does have a pretty decent following but it's very regional.
>>

among 12-17 year olds its the second most popular sport only behind basketball

MLS gets higher attendance than MLB and NBA. tv ratings for USMNT is rising and big tournaments like the EURO keep gaining in viewership.

add into that how many latino's are in the U.S. and it's not hard to see the trends m8

Factually incorrect, see pic.

>attendance

I can't repeat enough times that attendance means jack shit in 2016, most people are watching shit on their TVs. I won't even get to the fact that soccer stadiums tend to have higher capacity than basketball arena for obvious reasons (and no, it's not popularity).

>TV ratings

Most people here who "care about soccer" give a shit ONLY about the international tournaments. So they watch a USMNT game or the WC finals during summertime when 4/5 of the biggest American sports are in offseason mode, they aren't the kinds of people that follow soccer all year round.

What the fuck are you on? Are you just baiting and pulling shit out of your ass?

Compare

and

http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance/_/year/2015

There's 17 teams that have over 30k in attendance in the MLB and only 3 of them in the MLeLS. And that's with the MLB playing 6 gorillion games in a year.

>among 12-17 year olds

Also worth mentioning here is the idea that this demographic's taste will stay fixed.

Growing up in the 90's, basketball was the "youth sport." Jordan was the coolest athlete in the US, and every kid wanted to be like Mike. I remember the talking heads of the day declaring that basketball would be as popular as the NFL in coming decade.

Never happened.

All kids go through phases where [insert sport here] is now their favorite sport.

Soccer will rise in popularity, maybe to PGA tour level or something like that, but has no chance at supplanting baseball.

It's also still behind hockey by a good margin.
>>
>>69315518
People have been touting the "baseball is dead" meme since the 80s and yet it still remains a #2 sport by a significant margin. They just assumed it's in free fall once football overtook it, but that was obviously not the case.

>>
>>69315552
Don't forget the Mexican play soccer meme

Miami
Tampa
LA
Anahiem
SF
Even south side Chicago

Hispanics all through and Mexicans in the west to be specific have support their local baseball team more so than soccer

Yes MLS is relatively new but it also had 30 years to capture a audience and only picked up hipsters
>>
>>69315552
>People have been touting the "baseball is dead" meme since the 80s and yet it still remains a #2 sport by a significant margin.

Yeah, and the stupid thing they do is reference World Series ratings, which actually still prove baseball is popular.

For instance, the game 7 in the 2014 featuring the relatively unglamorous franchises of the Royals and Giants drew 23 million.

This years NBA Finals game 7 drew 30 million, but featured the two biggest stars in the game and was backed the most compelling storyline of the last decade.

The NBA Finals also has the luxury of running unopposed to the NFL. The World Series will often have to go up against Sunday, Thursday and Monday Night football.
>>
>>69315607
Hipsters don't play the game, so their audience is worthless.

As long as soccer has a "so hip, so Yuropean, so cultured" vibe in America, it won't go anywhere. Soccer is not hip or cultured. It's a working class sport, and it's an obsession.

Soccer must be loved by white trash, not be liberal faggots.

This so much. Soccer in Europe is not the sport of wine sipping twinks going to art galleries and dining in fine restaurants like hipsters assume, it's a sport followed by balding 40 year old fat men chugging cheap beer. Those kinds of people watch football in this country and will keep watching it for a long time.
>>

our marketeers have seen through that and sold scarves to people in scalding heat so they can be euroboos and it has worked better than the earlier attempts from MLS to get domestic attention

I also don't get this idea that it has to grow here? Not every country has to have the exact same sports culture, and I think it would be a boring world if soccer was the 95% most popular sports in every country while all other sports are relegated to the fringe.

ITT: yurofags who don't understand how large the US is

Our country is gigantic compared to most of yours. There is a wide range of climate and cultural differences from region to region. It would be like comparing the popularity of soccer from Finland to Spain.

If you mean the entirety of the US, soccer needs to take hold in the working class of the midwest and southeast and these places are both cultural dominated by a love of football to the point where soccer, by way of it not being a contact sport, is demeaned as being a 'sissy sport.' Americans see themselves as hard-working, blue-collar people. We understand that we have plenty of flaws but one thing in which we have a lot of national pride is our toughness and willingness to take risks.

Football, even with all of the concussion issues and concerns, will remain king in the US for at least another 25 years. I expect baseball will pick up a lot of its slack due to its traditional aspects, though soccer will gain a bit of popularity too from football's eventual slow decline. Just realize this shit is going to take decades. It'll probably be 2050 at least before soccer has an even respectable place in the national conversation.

hipsters have a disease called contrarianism

they see bone-headed mainstream america, see that its favorite sport is football, and want to go in the opposite direction, so they adopted soccer

somewhere along the way they decided that being a fan of soccer somehow made them sophisticated, because anything the mainstream doesn't participate in=sophistication, in their deluded, post-modern mentality - it's all the after-effects of capitalism robbing an entire generation of a sense of identity, so they have to latch on to external products to build an identity - everything is a piece of merchandise to be consumed, to mold the identity so they can figure out and establish who they are

and what they are are a bunch of log sawing faggots, who have ruined any chance america had at adding their own unique flair to soccer fandom

we have people in new york city who think they are hooligans and start fights with other "ultras" and literally chant in english accents - it's nauseating

there are minor differences in rules and gameplay but nothing that drastically affects the two (i.e. NFL has a two minute warning but not NCAA)

the college football system essentially acts as a feeder for the NFL, but not everyone gets drafted and not everyone chooses to enter the draft

well, that, and college players don't get paid, but many get a free ride plus benefits. considering how much it costs to attend school here, that is a decent payment in itself imo, especially if the player is from out of state

It already is. Soccer is the fastest growing sport in the USA and the MLS viewership is on a upward trend. Clubs like Seattle, Toronto, and SKC always have huge attendance records too. When the MLS finally gets rid of its too strict finically rules, we'll be a top 5 league.

It won't for a few decades. I love soccer and support my local MLS team but the way they are attempting to shove it down everyone's throats is shameful. Also copying the "hooligan" culture and attempting to apply that to our league is embarrassing. I'd much rather the league steadily grow in talent and attendance so that when the casual viewer finally comes around they get to watch a much higher quality, and convincing product.

>mfw a boreball fan calls me delusional
How is that alzheimer's treatment working out for you?

http://www.cnbc.com/2015/07/12/baseballs-advertising-worries-linger.html
>In short, baseball watchers are older than their counterparts. The median age of a baseball viewer is 53 years old, according to ESPN, compared to 47 in the National Football League. Separtately, the National Basketball Association's median fan age is just 37. Even more troubling, says Fisher, is that baseball is failing to connect with younger fans and bring in a new generation.

>half of TV viewers were 55 or older—and only 6 percent were under the age of 18.

>The average World Series viewer this year is 54.4 years old, according to Nielsen, the media research firm. The trend line is heading north: The average age was 49.9 in 2009. Kids age 6 to 17 represented just 4.3% of the average audience for the American and National League Championship Series this year, compared with 7.4% a decade ago.

The potential is certainly there, but people wont really start to get serious about it until the US is capable of consistently beating talented teams and that wont happen until the US starts funneling talent into the sport.

Until then, the support for the sport will just rise and fall like stocks.
>>
Why do non-Americans constantly try to shove this shit down our throat? Let us do our own thing and worry about your own countries.
>>
USA is a massive country, probably the most differing country in its own borders.

which means it could in some states, and never in some other states.

Nobody knows that faggot. lebron james is tho
>>

i called you delusional because you actually think that soccer is going to become our second most popular sport, when it is still less popular than fucking NASCAR. when you are that far behind, it's not going to take a couple of decades to get into second place. it's going to take a couple of centuries.
>>
>>69314817
Well, the growing latino population in the us sure will have some effect on the growth of football
>>

Read the thread. Mexicans watch baseball and basketball the most.

>Citing ESPN viewership.

Baseball is watch by its fans on its local channel. If there's a big game between the Yankee and Red Sox on ESPN, the respective fan will be watching on YES and NESN, not on ESPN.

And citing the viewing habits of kids ages 6-17 is retarded. At the age, you're most likely playing sports than watching them. Kids are too impatient to sit down and watch any sport for an extended period of time.

See chart. The MLB has more frequent attenders in the 18-34 ranges than the NFL and MLShit.

Soccer isn't making that headway in this country, Paco.

To be fair to the Euros, it's more the media here that does the shoving, and usually from outlets that lean left.

Example: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/shane-paul-neil/soccer-is-here-for-real-t_b_9730440.html

Dude who wrote the article also looks like your average hipster US soccerfan twat.

I lean left myself, but this shit is egregious.

I fucking cringe when I hear yuros talk about soccer like it's some sort of religion. It's not. It's a sport. Get over yourself.
>>
>>69328906
As a first gen immigrant I have to say he's right, they take soccer very seriously in Yurop, pretty much a religious, fanatical devotion. Like here it's completely normal for the Steelers fan to sit right next to a Ravens fan, they both casually chat throghout the game and high five after it. Try desegregating the fans in Yuro stadiums and see what happens.

College FOOTBALL is really popular everywhere except the northeast. The South, Midwest, Texas, California, everywhere.

College BASKETBALL however is a meme.

You guys shouldnt let baseball die though.
It should be part of your identity.

American football i still dont get the appeal.

Why is it that they throw "superbowl parties"?. Is like you care more about getting drunk than watching the damn game.

football is a GOAT sport for casual fags
your team only plays 16 games so most people can watch every single one instead of missing out of 3/4ths of the season

only rich fags can play hockey and football is always for poorfags

College football and pro football are two different sports with different rules.

Yea but is something ive seen comedians talk about.
Huge parties where everybody pretends to watch the game but are just chatting and drinking all the time and the poor irish dude couldnt watch the game in peace.

Yeah right, like NBA and FIBA basketball or NHL and International Hockey

So different

Baseball seems interesting, I have watched a few games just to see how it is and I liked it.

However it needs to fix all that time the players spend spitting and walking around though.

most baseball players are superstitious and they have to go through a routine before they throw a pitch or get ready to hit. i think it's dumb, i never did any of that shit when i played and i was a decent batter.
>>
>>69331944

Yes, I noticed that players tend to be meticulous.

The actual plays have a lot of fun, autistic strategizing with the strikes, balls, etc. and then the runs with base-stealing and possibility of double play and the like.

But to get to those very fun plays there are a lot of minutes where nothing happens and people just kinda move around and stare at each other.

The problem with this is that it only asks for one answer. For example, I much prefer NBA to MLB, but my favorite is NFL, so the fact that I like NBA more than MLB would be completely lost.
>>
>>69332680
Funny, I thought they were all slightly different versions of gridiron football...

Hence the same fucking sport
