Matt Cain maybe. His stats now are a bit worse than Quintana's, but through his first few seasons he was definitely a better pitcher but still had a losing record until he finally broke above it in 2012. Then he turned to crap and is back below .500.

Also the giants play in a pitchers park and their defense has been great to exceptional for the past decade, definitely helps his stats significantly compared to the white sox's abysmal defense and hitter's park.

http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/15094/matt-cain-unluckiest-pitcher-in-history

I really, really like this part

>The three starters were Cain, Johnny Rigney (122 ERA+, 63-64 W-L record) and Jim Scott (121 ERA+, 107-114). Rigney pitched for the White Sox in the late '30s and early '40s while Scott also pitched for the White Sox, from 1909 to 1917

Cain's ERA+ is down to 113, and Q's is 118 and creeping up this season. soon that list of starters with a 120 era+ and a losing record will be populated solely by not 2, but 3 white sox pitchers

did someone say art?
>>
>>
>>
>>
What the fuck is wrong with David Price? Serious question. How is he fucking up this season so badly? Naturally, a move to Fenway Park will hurt your numbers a little bit, but why on Earth is he so BAD now?
>>
>>
>>69282538

>Jim Scott posted a 1.87 ERA, 143 ERA+, (second on the team only to Eddie Cicotte who won the AL pitching title that season)
>he finished the season 6-7

only started 17 games that season, still ridiculous
>>
>>69283246
Matt Cain's 2007 season:
3.65 ERA, 7-16

Matt Cain's 2011 season:

those white sox went 100-54, a ridiculously good team and an extremely good pitcher was still below .500, mind boggling

Price, who went 19-5, finished 2nd, thank god, because Felix was better in most of the important categories.

When a season has yet to finish what do you think is more important win % or total wins?

The Giants currently have more wins than the Cubs but a lower win % so they are placed 2nd in the NL.
>>
>>69284837
raw win totals... but unless there's a big gap between two teams they don't matter much in the big picture. I'm assuming the Giants have played more games, and have one or two more losses in addition to those wins, compared to the Cubs?
>>
>>69285017
>I'm assuming the Giants have played more games, and have one or two more losses in addition to those wins, compared to the Cubs?

The Giants have 1 more win and 2 more losses so ESPN standings have the Giants a half game back.

the "leaked" list with Manny's and Ortiz' names on them was kind of swept under the rug by the league/media, seeing as the roid firestorm was still blazing.
As for Ortiz being a hero while A-Rod is seen as a villain, well, my best guess is that A-Rod has a very unlikable personality, and he's been caught, with concrete proof, multiple times, while Ortiz could cheer up the most miserable person in the world with his persona.
Ortiz also has the clutch factor; you could put together a whole chapter of Ken Burns' baseball full of his walk-off hits, especially in the playoffs. A-Rod's most prominent moment in the playoffs has been, and always will be, the bitchmode interference play in 2004.

Despite being from the bay area I never understood exactly what happened with Bonds and the steroids? I was pretty young so I never really payed attention to off the field stuff. Can someone explain it to me?
>>
File: image.jpg (52 KB, 392x450) Image search: [Google]

52 KB, 392x450
>>69285286
This guy named Victor Conte had a vitamins and supplement store called BALCO in the Bay Area that was basically a front for steroids. He started dealing to lots of high profile athletes in different sports. Bonds' "trainer" Greg Anderson was pretty much the middle man between the two and BALCO was eventually investigated and raided but nothing solid enough was found to incriminate Bonds. Conte and Anderson both did jail time for refusing to testify against Bonds
>>
>>69285375
So nothing was ever proven that Bonds took steroids but everyone pretty much knows it? Also who were some of the other athletes BALCO was supplying steroids to? And why "trainer" was he literally just a dealer they called a trainer?
>>
>>69281863
Also id like to ask

What is it with you people and your obsession with a team that you arent even a fan of?
>>
>>69285476
Yeah, I mean just using common sense you would see he was obviously on steroids. I'm a Giants fan too, not some bitter fan of another team or something. Other athletes were Bill Romanowski, linebacker in the NFL. Different Olympians including Marion Jones who was winning a shit ton of gold medals. A good amount of baseball players including Jason Giambi. There's more but I can't remember. Greg Anderson was a trainer, but he was just scraping by training people at a Gold's gym or some shit until Bonds ran into him, they knew each other as kids.

one theory also has it that Bonds started roiding in 1999, jealous of McGwire and Sosa being one-dimensional HR machines while he (felt) that he was the best all-around player in the game, and it really started to show when he broke McGwire's record in 2001.

he's pitching at too high a level to be snubbed. this is 2000 Pedro (slightly better than his '99 season despite the worse record), but even better. No, Pedro didn't get MVP either of those years (I-Rod and Giambi, respectively), but still who is Kershaw competing with for the award?

It's a pitcher's league right now, and yes, since the advent of roid testing, there's only been two pitcher MVPs (Verlander, then CK 2 years ago). But it's really hard to ignore the numbers and stature, even with his bad back. I mean, ffs, he still leads the NL in WAR (4.9), and is very close to Trout (5.2) for the MLB lead.

i agree with you, i just don't think this back thing is as minor as is being reported. i hope he gets it, but a great position player will wrack up better meme stats (WAR counts for nothing in MVP balloting mr trout) and cuck him out of it if he's out for too long

You wouldn't think a much smaller man in Odor would be able to lay flat a bigger fellow like Jose Bautista. But everyone saw it happen. Odor made Jose Bautista literally fall asleep on second base. Kind of sad if you think about it, getting rocked to actual sleep by a man much, much smaller than yourself.

>>
>>69291352

>>
>>69291534
Anon quoted above was just talking about how Odor "laid out" Bautista, but the point is that's not at all what happened. IIRC he didn't go on the DL. And I'm pretty sure a full on punch to the jaw is a knock-out threat from anyone that can decently throw a punch.
>>
>>69284512
Im about to stir up a debate that hasnt been discussed on /sp/ since before flags were a thing:

Keeping in mind the careers they've had who would you rather have as your #1 pitcher

Nolan Ryan
or
Greg Maddux

?
>>
>>69291785
Nolan Ryan is the greatest pitcher of all time so it's really a no-brainer.
>>
>>69291714
If that were the case most fights would end after a single punch but that doesnt happen. Its a pretty standard for any type of athlete that isnt a divegrass player to be able to stand a punch.

It wasnt that great of a connection by boxing standards and its not like Bautista wasnt completely blind sided by it and his head didnt do that whole snap that causes most knockouts
>>
>>69291714
Maybe a slight exaggeration but Jose Bautista was forced to a knee and needed to call in his teammates to help him.
>>
>>69291912
Beltre grabbed him right after. But why the fuck are we talking about this again? Odor threw a punch that was as clean as you'll ever see. It's obvious Bautista has a fairly strong chin because he got fucking hit real hard.

you are exaggerating. Beltre knew what was up being a teammate of Odor and he has played against Bautista plenty of times before.

Beltre knew Bautista was only looking for a bench clearing shoving match and nothing more.
Beltre also knew that Odor wasn't going to take that bullshit slide after being disrespected

so Beltre did the logical thing and held back Bautista getting him to safety.

Beltre is a complete bro

Pujols = 100%. unless he plays out the Angels contract in such a bad way that absolutely kills his career stats and even then 95%

his drafting BUILT the team we had for a good four to five years. Lester, Pedroia, Tacoby Bellsbury, >Buchholz, Jed Lowrie, Justin Masterson (yeah yeah not great I know but he was a de facto ace elsewhere), meme team infielder Brandon Belt, Reddick, ANTHONY RIZZO (shame he blossomed in Chicago), my man Christian Vazquez, Travis Shaw, Swihart, JBJ, and Mookie were all drafted under Theo's guidance. He is the sole reason Lester didn't come back to Boston this year (that, and upper management fucking up negotiations for an entire season).
Not a Cubs fan, but Theo is a genius. If he can turn around a moribund franchise like the early 00s Red Sox, then he can and has done wonders for the Cusb.
