If UNC beats FSU during the regular season (unlikely, but FSU always struggles with the schools from NC sans Wake Forest) then it'll be Clemson-UNC in the ACC championship again. UNC doesn't have the defensive depth to go the distance this year imho. Maybe next year since they'll still have most of their offense intact aside from Ryan Switzer. Every school in the Big Ten besides Purdue is considered a Public Ivy (Northwestern is private and is one of the top academic schools in the country). But Stanford, Cal, and UCLA blow away every school not named Michigan/Northwestern, and even then Northwestern's small size hurts it because it's like a worse version of U of Chicago at that point. At least Cal/UCLA are large PLUS excellent research schools.
UW is quite a solid school as well. Right below the two. Or St. is ironically a decent school, at least in engineering.
It's Arizona (UA grad here, but from Bay Area), ASSU, and WSU that drag the PAC down, but they're getting better.

I think you're completely ignoring schools like Wisconsin, but top to bottom the Big 10 is stacked academically. The exceptions being Indiana and Nebraska. People talk shit about Purdue but it's basically second to MIT in engineering, and the school is one of the only "A&M/Tech" type schools to stay true to its initial purpose, which is why it is often underranked (no real liberal arts, medical, or law focus hurts in rankings)

App State was a talented team that year but the momentum had heavily shifted Michigan's way late in the game and the crowd was egging on the team in full force. I agree that they probably should have run an extra play or two, but Michigan knew App State would want to pass outside so as to stop the clock on an incompletion or running out of bounds. The Michigan defense (who was much more talented than App State, that can't be denied) could make plays with this knowledge, possibly leading to a turnover or maybe even a sack/tackle for loss/tackle in bounds that would keep the clock running. Besides, they were near the endzone so completing a pass would have been that much more difficult. The safest play was to kick the field goal, and normally you wouldn't expect Michigan to drive it 60 yards to your 20 yard line in 20 seconds. Let's just be happy it played out the way it did, because it was the GOAT ending to a football game.
