Nowadays all the riders who attempt a solitary ride are always overtaken a few kilometers before the finish. It has become impossible for them to actually win a flat stage this way.
The reason is that all the riders have captors under their shirts to monitor their heartbeat, the power they're consuming, the calories they're burning, etc... so that their manager can know if they're overdoing it, if they can hold, if they're collapsing, if they have some energy left, when to eat and when to rehydrate in the most optimised way and at the best time, etc...
Plus they can transmit orders and all the informations they need through radio (so hence the earplugs I'm talking about), which give them a total control and clear vision of the race and what their opponents are doing, when they should attack, who must do something, who must support who, etc...
Basically, you can understand this as "wild stuff" and glory seekers making the unthinkable actually happening can't anymore. They're compeltely monitored and under check from their rivals. It killed the "magic".
2 or 3 years ago they tried to get rid of the earplugs, but all the riders protested against this.
