1990 was shit.
They only awarded 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw, so there was less incentive to win matches.
Also, back in '90, the keeper could pick up a ball that was passed back.
It got so bad that that in an Ireland v. Egypt game, the Irish keeper effectively held the ball for six minutes during one stretch because he would throw it and they would just pass back to him so he'd pick it up.
There were other issues too. It was super fucking boring. Lots of 0-0 draws.
