Just do it. You'll fall a lot, so start by buying a pair of hockey skates and learning either at adult skating lessons (if you're in uni, there's probably a class), or just in public skating. Wear kneepads under sweatpants or something so you don't bang up your knees if you fall forward. Join a beer league asap, and let them know how inexperienced you are. The beer leagues I've played in were full of people who were there for fun, so they understood I was bad. Buy used equipment, except for skates, stick, and obviously jock, unless you have the money for new equipment.
Really, the most important is to just realize that no one expects anything of you, and most people are happy to help you learn. In fact, a lot of people I met were excited to learn that I was just picking up the game.

I worked in rinks selling skates for a decade. I can tell you that anything new and under $200 is dogshit. It can take some work, but you can find a decent pair of lightly used skates for half retail price, and if it's not something he;s going to stick with, it's not worth it sinking that kind of money into it.
A beginner skater's feet would be brutalized by anything good as well, they're too stiff for someone who isn't exerting any sort of power. A cheap new beginner pair will run $70-90 and they just aren't made well anymore.
Used skates are also broken in already, lessening the pain of doing that on your own. Yes, you don't want to buy something that's blown the fuck out, but it is not a bad place to start.
Invest in something new once you're certain you're going to stick with it and you know what you want/need.
I also don't know how tall/fat this dude is or how fucked up his feet are, which would vary my opinion, so whatever.
