I live in Georgia so eastern time zone. Dont wanna follow a shit team but not the odds on favorite to win the league either. Just a comfy contender will do.

I just don't get why leafs only have three downs. It takes a lot of strategy away from the game, to be honest. It seems like everyone just chucks it downfield way too often.

That said, this is certainly better than boreball.
>>
>>68879900

That single point rule is pretty cool. I can imagine how tense a punt into the endzone would be at the end of a game where the kicking team needed one point to win.
>>
>montrelel
>>
>>68879938
CFL isn't like NFL, games don't overlap, so you could watch every game. See if there's a team you like.

The way the rosters change, and that 6/9 teams make the playoffs, any team could conceivably win in week one. A few years ago a team started 0-5 and won the grey cup.

>>68879958
If we added a fourth down, we would have to change other rules about field size or receivers in motion.
>>
>>68880039
I love it and the punting/kicking strategy here. Just obviously wouldn't work in the NFL with the field size.

How many of those College players could make the NFL? 20?
How many of those guys would make CFL? 30?

You could say the best NCAA are better than the best CFL players. Part of the reason CFL has lower talent is teams have to play Canadians. The worst American in the CFL is a lot better than the worst player in the NCAA.

I'd still take the worst CFL team. Even playing according to the NCAA.

They have done a sort of Big Six league but it seems more like a Champions League-like than a real championship.

It is a bit messy in Europe. National leagues try to have a system with conferences but it is not justified as it is just shitty "north/south" cuts. We could have just like how it works in the Top 14 (the french main league of rugby) with a championship, then sort of wild cards with the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th, and then playoffs with the 1st and the 2nd. Even more justified with 10 teams.

We just need to wait until US football becomes really popular in Europe and having "great" (+5k per game in average) attendances so it becomes broadcasted. In France, soccer, handball, basketball, rugby, volley and ice hockey are professionnal and on TV, so why not gridiron

As said earlier, goal posts are on the goal line, not the end line. Also, there's no fair catch, but a 5 yard receiving area. So punt returns usually get more yards, and they're already in zone for 3.

I got a cousin who works for a fashion agency in Calgary. She got hired by two arabs with money who were just launching it.

Other than Vancouver selling to Asians, Calgary might sell the most luxury stuff in Canada. There's just a lot of money there, and service industry stuff follows that.

How did she get Canadian citizenship. Your mom get MAPLE GLAZED?
>>
Shit "sport".

Completely irrelevant
>>
>>68883857
her eventual target is to eventually work for cirque du soleil, and the things she's made usually involve lots of bold and meandering color. doesn't sound like the kind of stuff that the flannel and boots crowd would appreciate.
>>
>this fucking team

Legit pissed right now. My hopes were high from the off season acquisitions. Bombers look absolutely brutal.
>>
>>68883895
>How did she get Canadian citizenship
our mom was born in canada and moved here when she was in high school, so my sister and I retain both american and canadian citizenship from birth.
>>
>>68883956
That's the better way to get both. I know some people that were born in America, but then moved here as kids. The last couple years the IRS has started targeting them to file and even pay.
>>
>>68884003
technically we don't even need a passport to enter into or exit from canada, as long as we go by car. that's only required for air or sea travel apparently.

I think my sister will be more at home there anyways. she's spent the last few years living in LA and has become much more liberal as a result, she said that if trump wins then america is doomed, and likes your new prime minister.
>>

absolutely disgusting

Calgary is the most conservative part of Canada. Harper's hometown.

yeah I know, but maybe she'll be better off there, thousands of miles away. she's still family, even if she couldn't be more different.

>>68884210
Lol yeah Calgarians are more likely to support Trump. It's not liberal by any means.

do people in montreal follow the alouettes. no one in toronto watches the argos because theyve got other hobbies and other sports and other shit that are more interesting. i assumed montreal would be kind of similar

I thought all of canada was generally much more liberal though? so a conservative city there would still be considered at least moderate here?

but then it wouldn't be canadian football anymore.

same reason why they've threatened to ban the NFL entirely if they tried to expand into canada, because it would threaten canadian football and that's apparently worth protecting. those people actually LIKE having it that way for some reason.

>>68884259
>do people in montreal follow the alouettes
Yes
Especially with Calvillo and the 3 cups we got.
They may not be as good now, but the fans are still passionate here.
>>
>>68884259
They do well in terms of attendance, they usually come close to filling up McGill. They're always been a good team though, if nobody replaces Calvillo might get bad. Outside of the 20k people going to games I don't think many care.

People in Montreal are more likely to do stuff in general.

Heard you can smoke joints in the stands.

CIS football is really popular in Quebec though.

Alberta would be close to Republican territory. Maybe not quite as conservative as Texas but pretty close. Definitely more to the right of the Democrat states.

But in general yeah Canada is more liberal.

3 downs instead of 4
Wider fields and double end zone size in Canadian
110 yard field in Canada, 100 in American
Uprights are at the front of the end zone, not the back
>>
>>68884367
the field is 110 yards long instead of 100
the end zones are 20 yards long instead of 10
there's 12 players per team on the field at a time instead of 11
there's 3 downs instead of 4
there's a way to score just 1 point by itself, but there isn't one in american football

probably more than I'm forgetting, but that's a start
>>
>>68884385
Sounds stupid they should just join the NFL
>>
>>68884367
3 downs instead of four
ball is bigger and rounder, harder to throw
field is 30 yards longer
goal posts are closer to the field
Canadian teams have to employ Canadian players
Canadian football isn't that big a deal. Top 2 NFL players have a combined salary higher than the entire CFL.
>>
>>68884395

It's to reward a missed field goal.

Punters try to kick it out the corner instead of out the end zone.

I think anyone behind a punter when he punts it is eligible to get the ball and advance it, I just didn't know you could activate that past the line of scrimmage. Special teams rules in the CFL are all kinds of goofy.

AFL is actually unique though, there's really no point having the CFL though. Just like how Rugby Union and League should be one sport.

>>68884847
AFL is only unique because nobody cares about Gaelic football. CFL is designed to be able to attract talent that wouldn't be successful in the NFL.

CFL is much better than the NFL though.
CFL games are faster, unless there's weather delay. The plays are more interesting; more long passes, running the field, plain weird ones too. Rather than just short-running it for the 1st down like in the NFL.
It deserves to stay.

>CFL is much better than the NFL though.

is that what canadians think? because americans certainly don't. I'm curious to see the comparisons between canadian ratings of CFL vs NFL games, as well as merchandise sales.
>>
>>68884925
Don't forget, Canada is smaller than the states. Some of those comparisons are gonna be skewed.
But look at Toronto. Nice new and big stadium for the Argos.
>>
>>68884925
I don't give a fuck about merchandise sales I care about attendance, good commentating, and good games

>>
montreal gets an nfl team before toronto how does canada react
>>
>>68884280
In spite of what everyone else says, the city is increasingly "liberal." You could kind of think of what's happened to Northern Virginia/NC over the past couple decades, with lots of inmigration and increasing sophistication. Calgary for the longest time was too conservative for its own good (literally no government ever took Calgary seriously because we were would always vote with/against the government no matter what), but since the oil money has been starting to dry up the past few years people have realized our old fanboy conservatism was pretty much a big failure.

At least our football team is good. Watch them tomorrow night. This MTL-WPG game was shit.
>>
>>68884925
Canadian NFL ratings are hard to track, because a lot of NFL games are simulcast on American networks, and we don't keep track of that viewership.

Grey Cup tends to do as well as the Superbowl in viewers. There's some regional biases for western Canada in following the CFL. CFL fans are older than NFL fans in Canada.

Ratings don't compare well because Canadians don't watch as much tv during the summer, because we can finally go outside.

I prefer CFL rules. I find NFL is even worse with the rule changes that encourage passing. CFL gives QBs more to work with, while the NFL has taken away from defense more.
>>
>>68884894
Our country cares about it, can't say the same for Canadians and their football. A lot of Canucks I know just follow NFL anyway.

>>
>>68884367
In addition, the field size really influences the type of player in each league; NFL prioritizes size, while the CFL is more about speed. There are individual NFL players that are faster than anyone in the CFL, but if you consider lineman positions (typically the heaviest players in either league) a CFL player is lighter and much faster.
>>
>>68885071
>As always the number does not include those watching in pubs, parties and backyards

>>
>>68884971
>Don't forget, Canada is smaller than the states. Some of those comparisons are gonna be skewed.
how is that relevant when comparing figures between canadians? I didn't mean CFL figures among canadians compared to NFL figures among americans, but both of them among canadians instead.

>>68885026
I'm just saying, the way people vote with their wallets is an okay place to start when trying to figure out league popularity. not the be all end all of course, but it's not bad.
>>
>>68885071
>A lot of Canucks I know just follow NFL anyway.
same here, which is why I brought it up. some of them weren't even aware that the CFL existed, and all but one of the rest expressed either disdain or disinterest in the CFL compared to the NFL.
>>
>>68885169
Regarding point #1, CFL games get better ratings than any other sporting event on Canadian TV (except for Hockey Night in Canada). NFL sometimes does better; NBA soccer, etc never.

Point 2 - CFL has very, very different levels of support. Toronto was on life support for years, but Saskatchewan sells enough merch to make it the third most valuable sports team in the country (after the Canadiens and Maple Leafs). Ottawa, Winnipeg and Edmonton compete pretty well for attention and affection with their NHL counterparts; I remember when the Stampeders were much more popular than the Flames
>>
>>68885214
right so it's not like they're minnows in general, they're just not as much of a national identity like hockey is. I can understand that. but if that's the case it seems like you guys would still be able to carry on if you were able to have NFL teams expand into canadian teams too, and every indication I've heard before goes to the contrary of that. so that's why I wanted to hear it from an actual canadian who follows the sport. I'm still holding out for maybe a Toronto or Vancouver NFL team someday, but I had always heard that it just wasn't ever feasible because it would kill the CFL.
>>
>>68885257
I wouldn't say it would kill the CFL - it would survive elsewhere. I would say the biggest thing holding back the NFL is that there simply aren't the tax breaks, big corporations, or big money necessary to support more than one major Pro franchise (by which I mean the NHL) in any given city. A good example of this is Vancouver - not for football, but for NBA. Vancouver is probably Canada's real sports city - they produce an obnoxiously large proportion of our major hockey, football, basketball, baseball, rugby, cricket and lacrosse players. No other city is anywhere close to that in the whole country, and they don't even have an NBA team anymore. Aside from the Canucks and Lions, all they've got is a AA baseball team.

CFL is pretty cheap to maintain - the stadiums are money losers, but they don't cost the country billions of dollars each, and Canadians by and large got over building huge stadiums in the 1980s. Canadians are pretty cheap too. I don't think you would find support anywhere for a $2B stadium, publicly financed. Even the flames here in Calgary can't get a new hockey rink and football field for half that price. Also, a lot of CFL fans are actually quite happy that the players are only paid in the tens of thousands/hundreds of thousands. Many feel other pro athletes are overpaid prima donas how don't really care for the sport, and find the CFL, like junior hockey, better entertainment and sport.

These are just some of the things I've observed over the years. A lot of Canadians feel like we should have an NFL team, but when it comes down to it, you would never be able to finance the thing, and even if you did, I have a feeling you would be very hard pressed to actually sell tickets to it (again, we're cheap; just look at the Miami-Buffalo games. They had to give away tickets and it was still the worst attended game in the NFL)
