As you're American, I see no reason for you to. The US female team are the world champions, and that just goes to show how female a sport football is in the US, and let's be honest, American football is objectively way manlier than regular football.
As far as the entertainment value is concerned, it's a good sport to watch in a bar when you want to talk to your friends and only marginally pay attention to the game. You watch at least 90 minutes of football (+15 half time) for 0 to 5 goals (it's rarely more than 5). So for 85 minutes you're watching guys run around with a ball trying to get to the other side of the pitch. Ridiculously boring. You can't do the same in basketball, where there can be as many as 20-25 lead changes in a game.

There are a few games that make football worth it sometimes. During the last world cup, it was 5pa1n and Brazil getting shat on. Generally I find myself rooting for blowouts and when they do happen it's absolutely exhilarating to watch the losing team.

It's kind of unfair comparing different generations. Jesse Owens was a great sprinter but he would be a literally who today running the times he did.
Pele played his whole career against really shitty opposition. That''s where his crazy goal stats come from. He proved himself at world cups and was no doubt the best of his era and a legit great player but he is amateur compared to Messi and the greats of the modern game.
