Good footballers go to English academies when they are teenagers. If they don't make it they end up in lower leagues in England instead of coming back to Irish League.
So the player pool for the Irish league is very small and therefore the standard is poor. Then because the standard is poor people don't really follow it so they get no money to improve the league.
Gaelic includes football and hurling but football is more popular
Shane Long was good hurler. He played for his county before moving to England. For an amateur league the standard is really high. These guys train like full time athletes but do it for free and have normal jobs. No doubt we lose many talented footballers to Gaelic games. Kevin Moran won an all Ireland in Gaelic football at the same time he was playing for Manchester United.
