Pretty much everywhere in the world, growing up, all the cool kids and alphas get pulled in to soccer.
In the USA, however, only the fucking weird kids, stoners, geeks, betas who couldn't get into any other scholastic athletic team join soccer, with maybe the occasional football/basketball/track-and-field kid that wants to stay fit during the off-season. The girls' team is full of dykes and nerdy chicks that want to fluff up their college resume with athletics.
If you're a pro athletein the NFL, NBA, etc, you can expect to make a couple million a year during your career, comparable to euro footy counterparts. except if you're a soccer player, that drastically drops to just over 100k. And they're paid that low because no one gives a shit here (or anywhere) about the MLS. Why? Because the MLS is shit. Why? Because soccer attracts the lowest-tier talent of nearly all other sports in the country. Why? because there's no real money in it.
The only way to "fix" US soccer if for more and more people to watch soccer, up ratings, and fill up stadiums. More people were watching Big Bang Theory reruns than this semi-final.

In general, except with central americans, latinamericans are short compared to americans. Someone tall, that jumps has more chances of getting a header. You might also want to check out another one of the top leagues, the Bundesliga(Germany) if nothing else than to see how Christian Pulisic does(he was that 17 year-old who played in todays game and plays for Dortmund, one of the top teams in Germany).
Our own top domestic league, the MLS, is still running and the regular season doesn't end until September but just keep in mind that it's a pretty big step down skill-wise currently(though nowhere as bad as it was 20 or even 30 years ago).
