That being said, you yanks would probably not qualify for the World Cup playing in CONMEBOL. Almost every South American NT are notorious chokers when playing in cups as favourites. See Colombia everytime they have to step up against smaller teams, Chile playing awfully against Haiti, what happened to Ecuador last game, etc, etc. The only NTs that are somewhat used to that are Argentina(that does well being always the favourite but ends up breaking apart in the finals) and Brazil. Uruguay is ocasionally really good against big sides, but has lots of trouble winning against everyone else.
In a qualifier, however, that element is mitigated. You would have to play not only against Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, etc, etc, but you would also have to face Ecuador on their speedy nigger form, Paraguay on their break all of your legs and score from a header nights, Peru when Guerrero is unleashed and fucking Bolivia high up in the sky where you need an oxygen tank to sprint two meters without dying.
I mean not to say that the US is shit, but still, the dificulty of CONMEBOL qualifiers is not in any way measurable by Copa America standars. I know your sports do not have such a format division, so you might not be used to it, but Cups are VASTLY different to point driven tournaments.
