There was a place called "tent city" in Dallas earlier this year, several hundred homeless people lived there but the city council voted to shut it down and make everyone disperse after a few homeless people were killed. I never looked into how that all turned out, those hundreds of people had to go somewhere.

It depends on the city and how they handle homeless people and/or vagrancy.
Some cities will use their police to harass them enough that they move on on their own. Homeless people talk to each other, they know which cities will make their existence miserable and which ones will let them get away with camping out under a bridge for a few months and never bother them.
My hometown in East TX would put homeless people up in a cheap hotel for a few days, buy them a bus ticket somewhere out of town, and load the homeless person along with their belongings on the bus just to keep the town free from homeless people or vagrants.
