We didn't out fight really, just made it impossible for Britain to administrate the country until we could bring you the negotiating table. The British spy network in Ireland was getting exposed routinely, and there was next to no operational police barracks in Munster. W.T. Cosgrave's courts had replaced British law in most of the country.
By the time it got to peace talks though, a stiff breeze could have defeated the IRA. Collins admitted later that his spy network had been near totally exposed, and de Valera returned from the US and, in a retarded "muh battlefield honour" move, had the IRA engage in open conflict with Brits rather than use guerilla tactics, which nearly crippled them. When anti-Treaty TDs argued that they should reject the offer and just drive the British out, Collins' second-in-command, Richard Mulcahy said they had "'not been able to drive the enemy from anything - but from a fairly good sized police barracks."
Lloyd George and Churchill made it very clear that if the Irish said no to the Treaty, they would have used their full army and crushed the IRA without regard for civilian casualties. They had just flushed around 1 million of their own men down the toilet and had another 1.5 million crippled in WW1, so they probably weren't fucking around.
Whether you like it or not though, the Easter Rising and the original IRA's actions were what brought about independence, not quivering and asking politely. Those men had balls.
