Literally who can stop them? It's the same team with injured guys getting healthy. Crosby will win the Hart (again). Phil Kessel will have 40+goals. Murray will win the Vezina and the Calder. I would say cap it but you all know it's happening anyways.

Not overrated. Everyone can see that he has some big holes in his game, but he also has obvious talent. His team defense bailed him out a lot, but he did make some great saves. His ability to shake off bad performances and come back better is huge, though.

Still, not sure if he's ready for a full season of starts. Team can't play playoff-level defense through a whole season and come out the other side healthy.

Now that I think of it, has there ever been an African player in the league ever? A South-African maybe?
>>
Jeremey Roenick: "Some people are saying Matthews could be the best player ever to come out of USA Hockey… Better than me, better than Modano. That’s saying something. And it’s his hockey mind that separates him."

nnamed Scout from a Canadian Team: "People don’t know how good he is because he wasn’t around to scrutinize all year. I think that’s a huge advantage for him. The team that gets him is going to be incredibly surprised just how good he is. I hear things like he would have gone third in last year’s draft. Are you kidding? "No disrespect to Eichel, but he couldn’t carry Matthews’ skates to the rink. His impact in the NHL is going to be special."

Ron Wilson: "I’m really surprised with Auston Matthews… he’s a good boy, trust me. I couldn’t believe how good he was."

Marc Crawford: "I have no doubt that he’s going to be a top No. 1 centre in the National Hockey League. He’s got the same vision, the same presence with the puck, the same take-charge attitude as McDavid and Eichel. I don’t want to put the pressure on him that he’s going to be a franchise player, but he’s going to have no problem fitting into the NHL."

Dan Marr, chief scout for NHL Central Scouting: "Some will suggest guys like Puljujarvi and Laine have gotten into the conversation for No. 1, but don’t believe it." (Matthews) is the real deal. This kid only has an on-switch. He’s even hard to play against in practice. He’d have been in the mix with Eichel and McDavid."

Mark Seidel, chief scout for the North American Scouting Service: "Matthews has shown throughout the [world junior hockey championship] he is a franchise player. He has been the guy that every team game plans against and still been phenomenal."
>>
Craig Button: "[The other 2016 top rated draft prospects] don’t do as much in the game as Auston Matthews. Austin Matthews is an elite player and does more in the game as a center-man… He’s every bit as good a goal scorer as Patrick Laine. He’s got a way better shooting percentage. Laine does a lot of it by volume [of shots]. He skates as well as anybody in this draft. He’s as tough as anybody in this draft. He’s as good a playmaker as anyone in this draft. He’s as smart as anybody… when I use the term complete elite, I don’t throw that term out [lightly]. That’s a term reserved for very few. He does more in the game than any player in this draft. That’s why he’s the best player in this draft."

Unnamed NHL executive: "He’s an elite talent… He has a ton of confidence in his abilities and a lot of poise, so he tries things that are unconventional. It makes him so hard to defend against."

Patrick Kane: "Well, I don't think he broke my record for points in a season, he crushed it. It would have been nice if he just beat me by one or two points, you know? But Auston is a player with a bright future ahead of him."

Chris Peters compares Matthews to NHL players who also played in the league during the lockout in 2012:"Looking back at the lockout season, a trio of high-profile, young NHL players played in the NLA. John Tavares produced 1.50 points per game, Tyler Seguin hit 1.38 and Patrick Kane had rate of 1.15. All three already had multiple NHL seasons under their belts at the time they spent the lockout in Switzerland. For Matthews to be ahead of one and not terribly far off from the other two is pretty impressive at his age."

Dylan Larkin commenting on Matthews dominance with the puck on his stick: "You can’t get him off the puck. And he has unbelievable hands."

Nick Foligno compares him to a player he's played against in the NHL:
"Sounds a lot like a Jonathan Toews, if you ask me… It’s a tough comparison. I don’t want to put that on him, but when you watch him play — I’ve gotten to play against Jonathan for a long time now — and you kind of draw those comparisons. He doesn’t really blow you away sometimes with his flashiness but he’s always on the score sheet. He’s always making a difference in the game. You can kind of see that in Auston. So it’s pretty exciting for whoever gets him in the draft."

Marc Crawford: "He's such a great kid; he really is… Don Granato [Matthews' coach with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program under-18 team last season] told me that he was beyond belief in terms of how good a person he is and he was right. He likes the right people. All you need to know is that he wants to be like Jonathan Toews, and that says everything right there. By the second or third game he was the team's top guy, and by his seventh or eighth game he was the class of the league… You're worried when a young guy takes a premier roster spot… But our guys quickly found out not only how good a player he is, but what a good person he is. He's really popular with our group."

Don Granato: "He goes into situations and it’s like he carries no pressure with him. He wants to be challenged. He wants to go into the corner with the biggest, hardest, strongest guy because that’s the best challenge for him. He’s a unique guy in so many respects. I’m very fortunate, and feel very fortunate, to have him for the two years that I did.... I had the good fortune of coaching both of them (Eichel and Matthews)... no disrespect to Jack Eichel by any means, but I think Auston still has a lot to prove but I think he'll do that [laugh]. I'm pretty confident he will."

The thing is, maybe Murray is just another flash-in-the-pan Ward, but maybe he's also the second coming of Roy. The most likely scenario is he's something in-between, which is plenty good enough for the Pens to continue their dominance through at least next season.

In December 2015, an NHL executive compared players from the 2015 and 2016 drafts: "If you asked me to rank them, I’d go McDavid, Matthews, Puljujarvi, then Eichel." Dan Marr compares McDavid and Matthews:
"Just talent wise, Connor [McDavid] has the cleverness, creativeness and finesse to his game where I would say Auston [Matthews] has more the power forward game where he’s really driven on the play but his puck skills are just as good."

Crosby literally just won the CS because of his completeness. Ovechkin is a PP babby. Hell, even Malkin is a more complete player than him.
>>
>>68429780

Crosby won the CS because the media wanted to gift him the only major award he was missing. Kessel and Murray both deserved it more than him but the largely Canadian media that votes on the CS hates Bill so he was never going to win it. Crosby could have been scratched for the entire SCF and he would have still won the CS.

Bob McKenzie literally said today his ballot had Kessel 1, Crosby 2. He was ONE of the 6 voters outside of Pittsburgh and San Jose who did the voting.

You're a total fucking retard if you actually think there's some Canadian conspiracy at work here. The PHWA guys who cover those 2 teams are the ones who held the most sway - I don't think they had any bias either way toward Crosby or Kessel. If anything, the Pittsburgh media had written articles shitting on Crosby's performance recently. Rob Rossi etc.
>>
>>68430166
no offense since you're an Ameribro who gets it, but it seems to me like a lot of American posters don't seem to get that a centerman is just inherently more valuable than a sniper/scoring winger.

For Crosby to be playing that immaculate game in the middle, driving play and freeing up easier minutes for the rest of his team to do damage against the Sharks bottom six, was huge for the team. If you remove Crosby from that team and you're left with Malkin who was like the walking dead, there's zero chance they win.
>>
>>68429294
Game 2 of the Tampa series retard
>>
>>68431197
This is exactly why people don't understand why Crosby won. Because they check the points total and start throwing fits. If you actually understood hockey you'd realize being a center has a broad impact on the game. I would love to see how kessel would fair against a top line in contrast to a 3rd.
>>

>>
>>68420992
Pongs, Laffs, Broons, Blots, etc. He's right though. It's peak childish. Purposeful mispronunciation instead of making a coherent point is the MO of this board.
>>
>>68431197
None taken. You also have to consider he had Sheary and Hornqvist as his wingers. Hornqvist is good, but he was on an extremely cold streak and couldn't find the back of the net, the empty netter not withstanding. Sheary in all honesty is an undersized 3rd line winger at best, and Sid was constantly covering his mistakes, particularly along the boards. All this while taking on the oppositions best lines. Everyone is saying Crosby disappeared during the Caps series, but the fact that he was able to virtually neutralize a line of Ovechkin-Backstrom-Oshi is just an incredible feat.

Yandle should be the priority to stay. He's easily the best defenseman on the team, especially last year when everyone else was crumbling. The biggest problem this team has is the slow blue-line and he provides the most offense out of any of them.

It took AV so long to figure out that Yandle was good and finally gave him more playing time.

They are going to dump Staal this off season and hope Girardi bounces back and has a decent season, then leave him unprotected in the expansion draft.

E. Staal and Boyle are gone for sure, they don't even have contracts. Stalberg is going to cost too much for a 4th liner so he's gone. Yandle will cost too much so he's gone, unless they move one of Staal or Girardi and decide to use the cap space to keep him.

All signs point to Nash being gone, he has a limited no trade clause but there is apparent interest around the league. His time in NY is up.

Brassard or Stepan is getting traded, which sucks.

TRADE RUMOR (welcome to the offseason):

Islanders beat writer speculates that the Isles may make a push for JVR, with their 1st round pick in play.

Its not the most solid of a rumor, seeing as the Lou/Shannahan administration is very quiet about possible moves but it's fun to speculate.
>>

That'd be cool. Isles would add another pretty good player that's not good enough to make them a real threat
