People gonna hate, but my take is:
The justice system fucked many many many blacks over the years. Especially prior to 1950, where looking at a white woman wrong could lead a black man to being executed.
So even though OJ was quite clearly guilty, the fact that he beat the case was seen as a massive "victory" against the white run justice system. Futhermore I think maybe they relished the reaction of white people seeing injustice pushed right in their face, kind of a "know you know how it feels" type of thing.
Sidenote: a majority of blacks polled revealed they believed OJ commited the murders.

If you were actually old enough to remember this shit, it was everywhere. It help OJ Simpson was a beloved celeb in sports and movies. He also had a high profile divorce with Nicole and had abused her. It made for fantastic TV and everyone gobbled it up.
Plus we're in a 90s nostalgia period so it milked for ratings again.
In all honesty, if he did it or not was never proven. All the evidence that was found (that wasn't tampered with) were purely circumstantial and we have to keep in mind that Nicole was a drug user too and probably got in a drug deal went wrong. The prosecution were shitty because they hoped they can use racism on their side and thought that would be enough.
