MLS player have poor skills so the entire game is focused on who can run faster (This is how african teams play too), pirlo is too old to keep up and was never very athletic to begin with. If he had a team that could work better he'd be killing it there, but because the entire league including his team can only play a physcal game, he lags behind.

Is he underrated? I've never heard anyone say that the majority of his career is anything but world class. One of the best holding mids of all time.

Look at the difference in the leauges
Serie A: Technical and Methodical buildup, based around passing and being a technically better player. Players consistently play until they're 40 because the ageing effects their play style less.
MLS: The MLS subscribes the the American idea that the best players are the best athletes, and so you need to be fast and strong to play. Being a skillful player means considerably less than it does in other leagues, because if you're not am Akinfenwa style footballer than you get left behind.
And even on top of that Pirlo has been doing much better in MLS than his first season. He's been putting in shifts playing defense and has really picked up more responsibility on the team. Sadly the team still has a shit defense, and that's by MLS standards.
