He's always criticized no matter what he does. He just got so overhyped when he was younger because English media were desperate for a new star that it was near impossible for him to live up to it. The guy still has the most goals in English national team history and is closing in on the SBC record for goals at United. He isn't "world class" at the moment but he's still reliable and has good qualities. If they'd just use him in the midfield instead of trying to keep him up front he'd be just fine
