How do you feel about English being the world language?
On one hand it must be nice, because you basically don't really have to learn a 2nd language, because in every at least somewhat civilized place on Earth you can expect to find somebody who speaks at least basic English.
But on the other hand, speaking your language is considered nothing special, there's no exclusivity, you can't really impress anyone with being able to speak English these days.
And while much of the world is bilingual (native language + English), most of you aren't, because, again, you don't have to be.

I guess it would be confusing to foreigners that English actually has two similar, but distinct, "th" sounds.
The, This, That, Those, all have one "th" sound.
Thing, Thumb, Thimble, Thunder, Think, all have another. The sound is more forceful.
Also if there's a Dutch sound that we don't have, it would probably be the "G", e.g. in "Louis Van Gaal". I know that you guys say it (or at least he himself says it) with a very throaty, gutteral sound. But we don't have that sound in English so we often say it "Louis Van Haal", with an H sound, or just with a hard "G" sound.

I'm jealous of bilingual people (like you). For such people, it's literally nothing special to them that they can just speak two languages off the bat. I've lived with A LOT of bilingual people from different parts of the world (mostly when I lived in London but I lived in a couple other places too). So I guess I'm now much more used to hearing someone switch between languages but it's still crazy.
E.g. I've lived with a Dane, a Mexican, three different French people, two different Spaniards, a Bulgarian, a Bolivian, and they could all speak English and their native language fluently. Actually the Mexican could speak English, Spanish and French all fluently, and his normal accent was basically American (he had spent his life all over to be honest), so hearing him switch between languages so quickly was the strangest of all.

German is the language I did for the longest at school, but when I was in Berlin I tried speaking German and totally messed up. I was only there for a couple days but I think by speaking to Germans at a bar and a house party and the places we went, I got better. But yeah, I guess for English people the only way you'll find such an opportunity to immerse yourself in another language is if you go out of your way to do it.
I've been on Duolingo a couple times to try and improve my German but as I say, it feels a bit pointless unless you've got actually got real people to speak it with.

I think they are talking about how you say car, tar, far, ect. Us, Canadians, Irish, and Scottish say the r at the end of those words. English, Welsh, Australians, and New Zealanders do not. I think that is what confuses them.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that there's a job pretty much anywhere in the world for anyone from Britain or USA, while the same opportunities don't exist for people who don't speak English as a first language.
If you're looking for work or looking to live in a country where multiple languages are spoken, then, of course, you just need to learn learn multiple languages. I do wish we had started to learn a foreign language in primary school for sure. I assume Spanish will become a standard in primary school going forward.

I had a Dutch friend who had this problem. It was like she was trying to pronounce every letter in the word.
Say the word 'garish' and you'll hear the 'ga-' sound that has a soft ending, so more like 'gaeh'. So 'garish' might be 'gaeh-rish'. And that 'gaeh' is what you should do with 'rare', just with an R instead of G.
So 'raeh'. If it was an R instead of G in 'garish', it would sound like raeh-rish. Basically, put the emphasis on the beginning of the word as you would with 'garish', to make it that 'raeh' sound, and you don't have to worry about the letters at the end of words
