Looking at Port's draw, it's quite apparent that they will not lose too many games from here on out. They're definite flag contenders, considering that they have just proved that they can play well on the 'G. Can't say the same about many other teams in the 8, though.

They can clearly play at the 'G, which is all that matters come finals time. And with their current form and draw, they will easily make the 8. They finished 5th in 2014 and was only 3 points away from making the GF and beating a Swans side who were off that day. For port, finishing 8th is no different than finishing 1st or 2nd, which they'll do with ease this season. Watch out.

I look at the top 8, and I really don't see too many teams that scream flag contender. North Melbourne have had an easy draw thus far, and cannot win games by respectable margins, and it shows with their low percentage. I can easily see them going out in straight sets. Geelong are May premiers and will only to continue to go down hill from here on in. Hawks are well past it and it's only a matter of time before they start losing the close games, and have a more accurate W:L record that better represents their low percentage. West Coast can't win away from Domain. Even in their home state, away from Domain during the NAB cup, they just barely beat the GCS. They may finish 2nd, and may make the GF, but I'm doubtful that they'll snag their 4th flag. The Bulldogs are flat track bullies and can't play away from Etihad, similar to WC. GWS will drop off in the second half of the season, and Adelaide are no threat at 8th spot. This year is similar to 2007, minus the Cats. An equal season for all clubs are equally mediocre.

Really, West Coast should've won that game. Had Naitanui not got in the way of Kennedy's should've-been mark, Kennedy would have gone back and got West Coast in front. WC are renowned for their ability to hold the lead with minutes to go, and would've held off the Bulldogs for the few remaining minutes. Considering this, and the fact that West Coast are still finding their form away from home, I would rank the Bulldogs a 6th to 8th team, and not the ladder position of 4th that they now hold. Move the game over the Domain, and West Coast easily demolishes the Bullies by 70+ points, ala round 22 last year. Bulldogs will probably make it to a semi-final at best come September if they aren't eliminated in the first week. Provided West Coast can continue their linear progression of their away form, they may just be a chance to win the GF, provided they win the remaining games that they are expected to win and finish top 2, and provided they face a team who likewise are unable to play well at the 'G.

North aren't flag contenders. Hawks are done. GWS have no finals experience. When you look at the overall variables, you will see that the 'WC can't play away from the 'G' argument is moot. Now, if the Hawks or North were actually flag contenders, then maybe the argument would be legitimate, but they aren't. I very much doubt that the 2016 GF will feature two sides that play well at the 'G given the current statistical data available.

In all honestly, from a non-bias point of view, I think that many of the supporters of the other 17 clubs who aren't the West Coast Eagles are afraid of the WC. Most notably the Victorian supporters. When West Coast won their two flags in '92 and '94, it was because they were 'steroid munchers'. When West Coast won their flag in 2006, it was because their team consisted of players who were using drugs that were potentially performance enhancing. All throughout 2015, West Coast were never considered to be flag contenders until they smashed the Hawks in the QF. And now, in 2016, any talk of West Coast being a flag contender is instantly shot down by the undeserving label of 'flat track bullies', and the excuse of how West Coast have the inability of not being able to win at the 'G, which most teams have. It's excuse after excuse after excuse. Really, there's no other explanation as to why these excuses exist other than the fact that the Victorians are both jealous and scared of the West Coast Eagles.They're scared of a WCE dynasty. They're scared of WC becoming the most successful club of the AFL era. I guess it's the good ol' Australian tall poppy syndrome, eh? Considering that WC alone are the reason the AFL still exists, I think that us Victorians should be more grateful and less jealous of their success in their relatively short history.

If Adelaide can keep St Kilda to less than 35 points in the 4th quarter, and continue this showing of good defence in the coming weeks, then maybe they can be considered to be a flag contender. I suspect their defence will concede more than just 35 points though, and I suspect that they will continue to be insipid in defence for the rest of the season.
