Basically this entire run of competitiveness the US has had since 2002 is a fluke. Somehow despite soccer's status in the US players like Donovan, Dempsey, McBride, Reyna, Howard, etc arrived.
Basically even kids who were good at soccer in schools were pressured to play basketball, football, baseball, etc from coaches and just general stigma against the sport. If you were a top HS athlete and wanted to get laid you wouldn't do it on the soccer team.
Now we're running out of that luck and having to scrounge black Germans to even stay in position of meagerness.
The first generations of kids who grew up with soccer being a more mainstream, respected, and importantly "hip" sport are only 8 to 10 years old.. the hope has to be that these kids stick with soccer as it becomes more accepted and liked.
