The problem this year is that I don't see anyone who could challenge the Hawks in the finals. The better sides this year are interstate sides so you can rule them out from beating Hawthorn in a GF instantly, which only leaves North Melbourne who are almost certainly pretenders.

Besides, that's false. Melbourne 2016 aren't the Melbourne of previous years. They're an improving mid-table side that will present a challenge for a number of sides. They're no pushover anymore. But keep in mind that Hawthorn lost to an Essendon side early last year that finished 14th. Their W/L is better than this time last year and they'll most likely finish top 4. Once they make finals, it's hard to see many teams challenging them.
I wish it wasn't the case because I hate them too, but you have to be realistic in your assessment of them. They've done little wrong this season. The GWS game was really the only blight, but only because you wouldn't expect the margin to blow out like it did. Still, premiership sides have been belted worse than that during the H&A.

Nah, direct win/lose comparison doesn't tell the true picture. Take away all the games where they were gifted umpball goals in the dying minutes or limped home against mediocre sides this season. Then compare it past seasons.
In past season they when they lost, it was to good sides, or sides play out of their skin. Melbourne played ok-ish, no way would they be ahead of Hawkthorn at any change in previous years playing like that.
A lesser version of the Hawks can still be competitive, but it is lesser version of the Hawks this season without a doubt.

I think that's more accurate this year than previous years. They've only lost to Geelong (playing out of their skin because it's their GF), GWS (good side) and Sydney (good side).
