What happens to a team if it retires too many numbers?
Liverpool tried to retire numbers 1 thru 96 and only fielded 4 players in the 1990-91 season
Team PR will slap together a story where a player "asks for permission" to use a lesser players retired number and they just continue business as usual. Not that many people care.
Retiring numbers may be the worst tradition there is.
