so they're going for halo.

>It is understood the aeroscreen is also heading in a direction the FIA is not keen to pursue at this stage, although it is far from off the table for 2018 onwards.

>For now, a modified version of the halo - first seen on the Ferrari during pre-season testing at Barcelona - is scheduled for further safety testing on June 24.

>Providing the upgraded halo passes these tests then it will be formally approved at the next technical regulations meeting on July 6.

So we will have aggressive looking cars with big fat tyres and a stupid halo will ruin it all, well done FIA
>>
>>67995249
*at least for 2017 as you people said
>>
>>67995249
Any reason why they prefer the halo over a windscreen? I guess the only things I can think of would be when it's wet out, and bug/debris buildup, but that one can be solved with tear away screen protectors like other motorsports at least
>>
>>67995672
Because they came up with it
>>
>>67995672
I read that the halo is quicker to develop in time for next season.

Plus there are still some potential issues with the aeroscreen that still has no agreed solutions.

>>
>>67996012
you're a dumbass. People die driving to work, that doesn't mean car companies stop trying to make them safer. Same thing goes for F1, you'd rather see more people die from getting brain damage from flying debris? A guy in Indycar was killed last year by just that
>>
>>67996386
Which no halo prevents.
>>
>>67996012
>So fucking what?? When did this happen?
Brands Hatch, 2009: At a formula 3 race Henry Surtees is killed by an errant tire bouncing off his head.

Hungaroring, 2009: Massa gets hit by a spring, knocks him out and spears into the barrier.

Pocono, 2015: At an Indycar race Justin Wilson is killed when a nosecone from Sage Karam's car somehow hits him in the head. Wilson was in a coma and died the following day.

Honestly I wish they went with the Aeroscreen device instead of the halo; it is a more attractive option so I hope they can work at it some more. Ditto with that of the halo; it's ugly as hell.

Yet no one was screaming for halos then? Why? Because this whole thing is about Jules anyways, not debris. Instead of knee jerk reactions maybe don't allow 12 ton tractors onto the race track? Hmmmm, better make a halo instead.
>>
>>67996740
who cares what spurred it? Not denying the Jules incident was stupid, but if it's something that can increase safety without impacting the racing or performance, why not do it
>>
>>67996634
It came DOWN on his head. It also weighed 8lbs, so if the spring that caught massa nearly killed no halo does anything anyways, it's like an artillery shell.

Because I just don't see it as necessary. They wreck all the time and walk away 99.9% of the time. Why change the car for this outlier event that might not be effective anyways?
>>
>>67996740
>>Hungaroring, 2009: Massa gets hit by a spring, knocks him out and spears into the barrier.
>Yet no one was screaming for halos then?

Actually, you're wrong on that one. They were testing closed cockpits then and at the time FIA couldn't find a suitable way for driver egress if the car flips over. The halo and aeroscreen devices allow egress because the car isn't fully enclosed. The Justin Wilson death was what brought this into action though I don't doubt there were people working on (semi)closed cockpits in the years prior.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-h6GHEEWR_U

Also to note, top fuel dragsters have been running closed cockpits or aeroscreened cockpits for a while, like this or picture related:
http://cdn-7.motorsport.com/static/img/mgl/1000000/1080000/1087000/1087300/1087367/s1_1.jpg

>i want the drivers to be as safe as fucking possible, hell make them invincible

Dunno about you m8 but if it's too safe then I don't enjoy the high speeds and the racing as much.

The balance a driver has to keep between going as fast as possible without going over the limit, (because going over it can hurt him, not simply knock him out of a race) is where driver skill comes to the fore even more. It separates the men from the boys.

Like Damon Hill once said, racing is the balance of speed versus the driver's mortality. How far a driver is willing (& more importantly, safely able) to take it, is a measure of how good he is.

Once you remove mortality (or even the scope of injury) from the equation, all you get is carbabbies. Whoever gets the best car wins, since they're not having to balance a driver's willingness and ability to take risks into the equation.

With the advent of telemetry and the rise in safety over the past two decades, this has become apparent, seen in the narrower and narrower gaps between drivers through the whole grid.

With a safe car, Its much easier to reach the absolute limit, since if a driver in a quick car is slow, he knows he can take more risks to speed up (& exactly where he has to do so, thanks to telemetry), without having to think as much about how it could work out negatively for him.

So, drivers approach the limit of their machinery and the limit of the track much more easily than they could in decades past.

This in turn leads to processional racing since everyone knows exactly where the limit is, and the car performance is the major differentiator.
>>
Does anyone know exactly what Michael Schumacher's condition is?

Everything I read about it is so vague. Is he full on vegetable? Can he walk or talk?
>>
Mind = obliterated that Monaco is smaller in size than central park.
>>
>>67999873

I feel bad saying it but my guess is that he's a vegetable. His family probably just don't want anyone else to know or see him in such a state.

I don't think there's any real chance he can recover to the point where he can walk around and talk (from what I hear).
>>
>>67999873
According to the most recent rumors, he is 'reacting' to treatment (t. Montezemolo), progress is 'slow' (t. Kehm).

The unsubstantiated rumors (t. Phillipe Streiff) are that he's paralysed, in a wheelchair, can't speak, has memory issues, but can respond to voices, and cries when his kids and wife speak to him.

He has also become Mr. Skeltal, weighing around 50 kilos.

Again, though, these are rumors.

The only official update is 'very slow progress'

Gentlemen, a short view back to the past. One year ago we saw Hulkenberg win Le Mans. One year later we saw Rossi win the Indy 500. A question for all of you. Is Rossi the American Hulkenberg, by winning a legendary race but seemingly not fulfilling his potential in every other races he does? Is he better than Hulkenberg, worse? What are your wishes for the future, concerning Rossi, errrm, in F1? Less Rossi, more? Or less and more good races from Hulkenberg?

I assume they didn't know yet that the ultras last forever when they made the choice? Remarkable to see they still selected so many of them.
>>
>>68001344
>ultras last forever
Only if it rains again. They didn't even last a single lap in Spain testing, remember?
>>
For Baku, did the tyres have to be confirmed 8 weeks beforehand or 14 weeks?

The regulations say "The teams must inform the FIA of their nominations no less than eight weeks before the start of each European race and fourteen weeks before the start of each event held outside Europe" and Azerbaijan, despite what their government insists, is in Asia

No way they call it the European Grand Prix and then consider it non-European for this purpose.
>>
>>68001368
You have a point, but Spain is the most abrasive track surface of the calendar, so... Ultras should only last a couple of laps anyway, they still last way to long. There doesn't seem to be that much difference between the ultra soft and the super soft, in grip nor in durability.
>>
>>68001429
I know Williams are bad but come on, they're not a backmarker just yet
>>
>>68001250

what is the proper strategy here?

qualify and start the race on ultrasoft, then change to soft and try and finish the race on them?
>>
>>68001444
Shanghai and Marina Bay a bit worse for tyre wear, but Catalunya is a close third
>>
>>68001530
I dunno how many times you have to run the softs in the race but Ultra-Ultra-Soft(long stint) or Ultra-Soft(short stint)-Soft(short stint) are likely, maybe even an Ultra(long stint)-Soft(long stint) for a car really easy on its tyres

I should send this to the flemish commentators.
Usually they are full on dicksucking Amd Amx, but now that he was crashing all the time, they seemed to point their frustration at Massa. Constantly saying he should retire, is too old, can't drive anymore. Also questioning Williams, why they still have Massa driving for them.
I found myself thinking: What the hell?! Where did this Massa bashing suddenly come from?

personally I don't dislike him but do feel he is too sedated and lacks edge/bitchyness. a good driver but not good enough to make a difference.

not to mention that tracks that've been on the calendar for donkeys years are also wrong; Canada, Silverstone, Monza, Brazil and Suzuka come to mind

>People think Monaco is indicative of the Ultra soft tire's performance

Why are people so stupid? It changes considerably based on the track. Monaco was very cool, actually still wet, the laptimes were slower than normal due to wetness, and the track itself has a very smooth surface and is generally very easy on tires assuming you don't hit the barriers. It's basically the perfect storm of making the ultrasoft seem like an invincible tire.

If it's a hot day in Canada, the ultras will last like 7-12 laps or something. They tested the tries in Barcelona and everyone said that the tires are crazy with the deg and were finished after 1 quali lap. Granted, Barcelona is a track that is notoriously brutal on tires. This is based on the assumption that Pirelli didn't actually change the compound and if they did then they're fucking idiots (which wouldn't surprise me).

Just like the Supersoft lasted like 7 laps in China and lasted ~50 in Monaco just now. Monaco is a freak race and an outlier in almost every metric of F1 and is basically just unique, so I am ok with the fact that Pirelli didn't specifically engineer 1 tire compound that works in Monaco only because they would be beyond useless on any other track save for Singapore or something. I'm going to guess the ultrasofts are going to deg much more drastically in Singapore as well.

HALO
>ugly as sin and looks incredibly intrusive

>offers no protection against debris etc

CANOPY
>also intrusive looking but a see-through canopy will blend to the car much better, like an extended visor that is already on the cars, much easier to get used to visually
>offers full protection against accidents like Massa and debris in general
>literally all the same protections as the halo

Why is FIA going for the Halo again? Its like they have moved on from actively trying to kill the drivers to actively trying to kill the whole sport. Viewership is already down in key markets because no one gives a shit about hybrid tech and shitty sounds, and no one gives a shit about a canopy that is not even necessary. People watch F1 for the danger, the crashes, the craziness. All people want is for crazy cars to go fast as fuck and sound like they're on the verge of exploding, is that too much to ask? Like 2% or less of F1 fans actually care about the tech and I'd bet like 20% of active fans couldn't even name what the engine that currently used is. Probably like 1-2% of the fans have a vague understanding of how the engine even works.

People watched shitty progression races with like 3 overtakes total during SchumiWinsLOL era in higher numbers than they watch the current shit. People actually just want fast awesome cars and even a progression race is ok if it looks like the drivers are at least trying to drive fast

its not that hard, F1 deserves their downfall and eventual bankruptcy
