“In cricket you mark a centre line to know where your middle stump is, so I marked that,” he recalls. “But my bat kept slipping on the crease, because it was a brand new wicket. So I got my spikes and I started scratching the surface and all of a sudden I got this perfect cross on the wicket. I did it at the other end too, so every ball, I’m looking down and there’s a perfect cross, and I’ve been meditating on it for months.”

The man nicknamed ‘JL’ went on to make 250, his highest Test score, while fellow opening batsman Matthew Hayden also reached triple figures.

Four years later Langer and Hayden had become Australia’s most successful opening batsmen, and one of the most prolific pairs in cricket history.

The secret to their success? The cross.

“Matthew Hayden and I, every game after that, we used to put the cross on the turf,” Langer told The Record in an interview recently.

“We didn’t even have to talk about it, it was just part of our partnership, every time we batted for the next four years we had a cross on the wicket. Now that has been a secret, but I’m happy to share it.”

Langer made his debut for the Australian cricket team in 1993 as a 22-year-old, but struggled to retain his spot in the side, playing just three Test matches in the space of five years.

He says it was a difficult period, but his faith in God helped him get through.

“In life we all have down times, but to have that faith and to have those Scriptures to draw on, really it’s beautiful,” he says

Langer began reading the Bible during the flight, and was struck by Philippians 4:13, which he interprets as “God gives me the strength to achieve anything”.

It was his inspiration for the greatest innings of his career

“All I said every ball for six hours was “God gives me the strength to achieve anything”, it was like a mantra, it was like I was meditating,” he says

Langer says his performance that day proved to him that he could perform under great pressure and against quality opposition

It’s November 2017*, and the battle for Test cricket’s most prestigious trophy – and its number one billing – is about to resume as Mitchell Starc stands atop his run-up in Brisbane’s broiling early afternoon heat, tossing a shiny magenta ball from hand to hand as the Gabba fans find their voice. Some 50 metres ahead of him, squatting and stretching in the post-lunch heat, is England opener Sam Robson whose Australian heritage has yielded more words than the 28-year-old can boast Test runs in the weeks and months leading into his team’s Ashes defence. Robson has been brought back into the England fold due to ex-captain Alastair Cook’s retirement at the end of the previous home summer, having decided that the remarkable achievements of his record-setting Test career did not need to stretch to a fourth Ashes tour Down Under.

A fair enough call, given Cook hung up his hat as his country’s most capped Test player, its most successful Test captain and the only England player to have topped 11,000 Test runs which saw him installed among the 10 most prolific batters the game has produced. But more importantly for Cook, he helped make good the prophecy of Sir Ian Botham after his team's thumping innings defeat of an out-gunned, cold-numbed Sri Lanka at Leeds 18 months earlier, that England was bound to return to the world’s number one Test ranking.

Warner scored a 42/50 on the Wonderlic intelligence test. A score of 20 is consistent with average intelligence. To convert a Woderlic score to IQ, double the value and add 60. This means Warner has an IQ of 144.
To add some context, this means David Warner has a higher IQ than the following individuals:
Thomas Edison
Abraham Lincoln
Thomas Jefferson
Barack Obama
Bill Clinton
Adolf Hitler

Here are the Wonderlic scores for other relevant Cricket stars:
Alastair Cook - 35
Kane Williamson - 33

>I think day-night tests are a good idea, but I don't think they can hugely increase popularity.

There's been one so far against Poo Peeland and the numbers were frankly mind boggling.

Normally a Test match against Poo Peeland gets <5k people attending a day, no matter what venue it is. During the D/N match they got atleast 45k/day in a 48k capacity ground.

The peak TV audience on the third nights play was 3.5M people. For reference, the AFL and NRL grand finals both get about ~4M. The BBL final had a peak of ~1.8M. And this is a Test match against fucking Poo Peeland we are talking about...

There are obviously some mitigating factors: it was the first one so there was a gimmick factor and Australia is by far the best place in the world to play them conditions wise (no dew, not cold at night etc). But the indicators are pretty clear.

>Are Malaysia actually any good? Is your team just full of Paki/Indian migrants, or is cricket big in Malaysia too?

Cricket is probably the fastest growing sport in Malaysia. I think >we're division 3 right now but hopefully this improves soon.

Most of the players are Malays and Tamils. A lot of the Indian/Pakistani and other migrants play it but they only make a small part of the playing demographic.

Also, most schools and universities have teams. There's a lot of FC, t20, and ODD domestic leagues and tournaments.

As for the conditions, they would be good but it rains a lot.

The fast bowlers aren't bowling anymore, so there's not much point to them. They're just dead weight

Sometimes they take them off if it gets too hot, but that can be dangerous against faster guys

There's this indian restaurant near me that is run by a guy who used to be the official chef of the australian cricket team. His entire restaurant is filled with autographs from literally every cricket player to play in Australia from the mid 90s onwards. He's got a signed bat from Tendulkar and Dravid, Gilly's gloves, McGrath's shoes and a game ball signed by Dale Steyn, but front and centre as the crown jewel of his collection is unironically one of Stuart Clark's wide brimmed hats.

Just middle class in general.

I was at the England match at the SoL on Friday, and the cricket yesterday. The difference between the people was incredible. The football fans were 90% scum, the cricket fans were top blokes though.

The other thing was that the football fans come across as really aggressive constantly, but the cricket fans were just having a laugh.
