Hey /sp/. Need your input.

I'm a college pitcher (sophomore 19) at a NCAA D2 School. I'm left handed and throw tops about 85. I'm 5'10 and stocky/muscular build. Im really trying to reach 90 and was wondering if I do everything I can and work extremely hard, I could reach. Anyone think it's possible. Any other pitchers/ex pitchers that have been in the same shoes?

Yeah, sure. Just throw the ball harder.

Get out a pen and paper, you're gonna need to inject this PED

Probably means your only using your arms and shoulder.
1) Put your whole back into it -- slingshot twist as you pitch.
2) Use your lower body also -- add power by launching yourself with your legs. Small pitchers like Tim Lincecum do this that's why he looks like he's stumbling off the mound. Also, Vida Blue says that in late innings when he needed extra ooomph, he launches with his legs.

Former pitcher here. I redshirted one year at a D1 school then quit. I'm a righty and topped out at 87mph and basically you want to do 3 main things.

1) lift weights and eat lots of protein; primarily you want to keep improving your squat, do core exercises
2) lots of conditioning; run at least a mile a day
3) long toss; you want to find a good schedule for you and get a partner on your team, ideally throw every day. If you pitched the previous day then just throw for maybe 15 minutes to loosen your arm up then ice it and shut down for the day.

We would work out 3-4 times a week as a team, usually at 6 in the morning so make sure you're hitting the gym as often as you can. I'm guessing your season is over or about to end, but if you're still playing then don't change up your regimen until summer. Then once summer hits go heavy on the weights. If you can pack on like 10-15 pounds during the summer and keep playing long toss I'm positive you can add at least 2-3 mph to your fastball. You're lucky to be a lefty since you don't have to throw 95+ to get noticed by MLB scouts, but if you loosely follow what I told you and stick to a regimen with a strong work ethic I am 100% positive you can be throwing 90+ by your senior year. Just remember you'll get results soon, then marginally after, so you might hit 87 or 88 after a few months, but then it may take an extra year or so to add 1 mph. Injuries will slow you down but don't get discouraged because it's easier than you think to get back to where you left off, just be patient.

For me (and every other unsuccessful college pitcher) it just came down to work ethic. You really have to commit yourself to working out and eating right all the time. Do some yoga/pilates too while you're at it. I know some guys that added a few mph just by adding that to their daily workout. But yeah, work ethic will be the number 1 factor that will set you apart and determine your success (other than freak career-ending injury). Good luck bro!

Thank you very much. I was the only underclassman pitcher to really pitch consistently this year. They used me as a lefty specialist, and I struggled with that role because I am used to starting. I'm hoping to earn a starting spot next season. I am hitting the gym constantly now. Also will be going to that Texas Baseball Ranch down in Houston. I def have the work ethic, just need to keep it up. Thank you for the advice.

You're too short
