England vs Sri Lanka, 1st Test, Day 3

>England 298
Bairstow 140
Hales 86

Sanga is literally one of the most insightful and well-spoken people in cricket and English obviously isn't even his first language.

Listen to the MCC Spirit of Cricket (or whatever its called) speech he gave a few years ago, you can probably find it on cricinfo. It's an interesting listen about Shit Lanka's cricketing history.

"Ivana is a babe" – Daniel
>>
Good day sir, my name is Daniel.

I’m a 20 year old New Zealander (annexed-Australian for you Big Strong Americans). I watch cricket every day, and spend my time perfecting my PUA techniques and reviewing music from superior black metal bands (Burzum, Alcest, Deafheaven)

I train with my copy of The God Delusion every day, this superior piece of literature can disprove the fallacy of religion and, coupled with my IQ of 250, means that theists cannot keep up with me in intellectual debate. I earned my fedora two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I shitpost fluently, both /cric/ and the /rug/ dialect, and I memewell as well. I know everything about mechanical engineering and their virginity code, which I follow 100%

When I get my visa, I am moving to England to attend a prestigious Durham county game to learn more about their magnificent cricket club. I hope I can become Ivana’s boyfriend or finally make my car stop stinking!

I own Durham whites, which I wear around town. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to England, so I can fit in easier. I shitpost Australians and curries, and say “tbqh” as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond tbqh.

Wish me luck in England!

So guys, I've been stalking this Ivana slag on fb and we've actually got quite a few mutual friends with her.

My plan is to get one of my mates to introduce me to her, and woo her over. Being /fit/ and possessing a 8.4 GPA, this should be no great challenge. Once I have made her my gf, I will spend whatever time I have in her social circle, cucking Daniel. Every single time he's around, I will stick my tongue deep down her throat, and make eye contact with him THE WHOLE TIME. I will then drink a glass of /milk/ once I'm finished, never taking my eyes off Daniel, before teaching my new gf the virtues of thrash metal and the greatness of Yorkshire Cricket Club.

Daniel is the epitome of classic textbook technique and power hitting. The key aspects of his batting game are his fantastic front foot driving ability and a strong backfoot game characterised by a trademark Daniel pull shot through midwicket. The secret to his clean hitting is the shape he maintains during and after hitting those big shots. Even while he plays outrageous strokes, like the flat-batted swipe over the bowler's head, he manages to stay quite composed. His arms, shoulders and torso are always firm, rarely losing shape.
Daniel holds several fourth grade Auckland records in 50 and 20 over games. Some of them include, the highest 50 over score in a run-chase, highest one day international score by a virgin batsman, highest 50 over batting average of all virgin opening batsmen who have scored over 1000 runs and highest 20 over strike rate of all opening batsmen who have played over 30 matches.

Cricket, to me, is an epic. It is unlike any other sport. Every single match is like a total battle between two teams, with battles within battles all over it. As Ian Chappell said, cricket is not a team sport, it is an individual sport played in groups. It is the sum of one team versus the sum of the other. I love seeing the epics unfold as certain bowlers take on certain batsmen, across overs and days and even weeks in a series.

T20 is shit. Sometimes I have to walk around it and be like "eh it's okay" as to not offend people but being brutally honest, it's fucking garbage. It's all luck and power, there's no grace or subtlety or finesse. Cricket is elegant and smooth and skilful. T20 is brash and crude and juvenile. Whenever I watch a T20 I see no slips, no catchers, no interesting tactics. I see a bowler bowling a rank full toss, a batsman slashing aimlessly at it and getting caught. A bad ball, a bad shot - a wicket. It's almost always like that. A good ball in test cricket is beautiful. A good ball in T20 is one that flies sideways out of your hand and knee height to the batsman, but it's okay because in his wild heave he missed it.

To me, cricket is insanely unique and all of the uniqueness in it is in Test cricket and only test cricket. ODIs are this lame middle ground that honestly manage to be even worse than T20s at times. If you want wild swinging for the hills and bowlers deceiving batsmen with pace, watch baseball. Seriously, there is basically no difference between T20 and baseball. You want ""tight finishes"" watch basketball. T20 is an attempt to make cricket like every other sport on the planet and it sucks all of the things that make it unique and beautiful out of it. Imagine if golf made all the holes 2m wide and the courses 3 holes long. Imagine if tennis changed scoring to first to 10 rally wins is the winner. Imagine if rugby removed the penalty goal. Cricket shouldn't be about explosions and cheerleaders, because there are so many other sports that do that stuff so much better. Cricket is about tea and strike rates of 42 and leaving the ball and Alastair Cook and seam positions and how many slips you need and complex fluid dynamics. That's why I like it. And for the record, I'm not an old fart. I'm 19.

https://theprogmind.com/author/gallifreymusicreview/

>The progression of Katatonia over their ten studio albums has been one of the most consistently gradual shifts in sound from any band I know. While it’s evident that their doom metal focused early material differs greatly from the alt-metal angst of the early 2000’s or the atmospheric mood rock of their recent material, it seems that with each album the band just push ever-so-slightly in one direction, it’s never in leaps or bounds. A new Katatonia album always brings comments of “man, they never seem to change at all”, yet it is the minuscule changes that contribute to a discography-long evolution, and The Fall of Hearts, in its own tiny little ways, contributes to this movement.

We've been over this. I don't agree with the Exec Co part of the big 3 but I don't have a problem with how they are distributing money. The one good thing Srinivasan did as well was arrange more Indian tours to places like Zimzam, Windies and Poo Peeland.

You said you wanted 15 cricket playing nations. Well I think with the way you want money distributed there would end up being 8 (already 9 basically and the Tendies are on suicide watch as is).

No it doesn't you fuckwit it's about furthering your understanding of a topic. Taking pride in not knowing something is a trait of an unintelligent person. Do people who study literature or art history do it because they're insecure? Are you really that fucking stupid to believe that the pursuit of understanding makes you insecure?

Doesn't it fascinate you as to WHY you like these vibrations? Does nothing in the universe prompt you to learn? Understanding one's thoughts on a topic, ESPECIALLY something that is as difficult to put words to as musical taste, is actually really interesting if you get into it. Saying "I like it because I like it" is the equivalent of saying "I have no personal thought and I am proud of that". Even the most basic of normies can still (occasionally) explain why they like things, even if it is as basic as "I like explosions and big boobs"

Literally what do either of these posts mean.

I realise I'm making an argument out of nothing here but this does strike a bit of a nerve with me. I watch a lot of film and read books and spend quite a bit of time discussing them and nothing annoys me more than people who choose not to think about things at all and then act all smug as if they have the intellectual high ground by not thinking about things. There's nothing to be proud of in ignorance.

Daniel may mostly listen to edgy metal but at least (from what I see, I haven't really read any of his reviews properly) he actually explains himself and understands his thoughts.

I'm definitely not autistic enough to bother with a "poosonality". I don't generally post here that frequently though either, I do /lit/ and /rug/.

I'm currently pushing through some historical books on the Duke of Wellington and Napoleon. Reasonably interesting shit. I've also been reading a lot of really campy space opera because it's moderately entertaining, mostly Peter F Hamilton. I really want to like a lot of sci-fi but I feel that no seriously good authors attempt to write it because they don't take it seriously. Hamilton is solid but he's still got a lot of classic modern sci-fi traits in that he writes too much plot and not enough characterisation or development of broad concepts.

Why Russian though? Surely there are better meme languages to learn.

>>
>>67734781
Hmm okay. Most newfags we send straight to the IPL because real cricket is too slow or autistic for them to cope but if you don't have a short attention span you may be able to deal with it. This match may be a bit boring from now on because England have an enormous lead and the rest of the game will be really just waiting for Sri Lanka to lose, but watch it if you want. Yesterday was probably the best day to see. Starts in 2.5 bings.

The IPL is also on but I have no idea what's happening with it. I think finals are soon. Probably watch Bangalore or whatever they are because they have a pretty stacked lineup.

No, if they've got any gumption they do it because they want to expand their knowledge and understanding. They don't do it because they want to inflict their insecurities on a bunch of underage neckbeards. Now bog off or I'll explain why I like ABBA.
>>
>>67734911
Kinda. Remember that there are different forms of cricket. In proper cricket there are only 6 actually good teams (Sri Lanka too at a push), but in white ball cricket there are a few more (because it's easier, but that also makes it less good to watch)

Go read some posts on reddit that explain it or something, I'm sure someone's done it better than I can. But please watch our sport, anything to outnumber the ACBs more.

I started learning Russian when I was in high school because I was autistically obsessed with Russian history and wanted to access primary sources. I also dabbled with talking to qt's on interpals but that was lame and I never got into it. After that I took it as electives at university because I had a massive head start on everyone else which meant it was ez marks and developed it as a hobby more than anything else.

It also looked good on my CV.

>Surely there are better meme languages to learn
From an Australian perspective, atleast from a practical POV the best are probably Mandarin, Indonesian and Arabic. Hopefully I will get the chance to learn Arabic in the next couple of years. it will be insanely difficult and intense but awesome at the same time I think.

Are you in a major city?

If so, check your local universities. I'm from Sydney and Sydney Uni has a department called the Centre for Continuing Education which is sort of like a TAFE but less formal in that you aren't assessed or anything, you just turn up to class and learn. They have language classes that start all the time. I'd recommend going to one or two courses (usually about 6 months) so that you can learn the basics. After about 6 months you should be able to start learning on your own quite easily.
>>
>>67734991
Can't even get a white one let alone a foreign one ;_;

>>67734993
thanks. Would you recommend going to a class or something? Is that something that even exists? I feel like it would be easier to learn if you were talking to other people.
>>
>>67735001
Meme cricket's purpose is to introduce new people to the sport. For that it is very good, and without it cricket would be dead. Cricket is pretty different to most people's expectations for sport so the brevity and "excitement" of T20 is a good stepping stone.

But if you've been watching cricket for more than a year and still prefer meme cricket you should kill yourself.

Yes. I started with Spanish but I couldn't continue because I had to move out of Sydney for work.

I also did a couple of advanced Russian courses because my grammar was terrible. It was excellent. Classes are typically about ~15 people in size and the quality will depend on the teacher you get. All of the classes are on campus at Sydney Uni but anyone can enrol, it isn't actually part of the University itself.

Test cricket really requires an intimate understanding of the game to enjoy, but I don't think that stops someone from moving into it from ODI games, which are fairly accessible in their own right.

I'm not sure about this T20 gateway meme to be entirely honest. It's a radically different game to both other forms of the game. The only ""tactics"" it involves are wide yorkers and fitting as many guys on the boundary as you can. With ODI games you don't see that kind of shit until the 40th over when the batting side is going at 8 runs an over or some shit.

The thing about T20 """""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""tactics""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" is that they are always praised posthumously.

>commentator says MSDOS=genius because he did x or David Warner won the game because he did y

it's nothing more than reactionary praise. With Twenty20 you can't actually sit down and talking about cricketing philosophies or talking about what particular tactics work in what situation. It's literally just

>batsman: slog every ball
>bowler: try to stop batsman slogging you every ball

Everything that happens beyond that point is just luck. I gamble quite alot on Test and ODI cricket and am very profitable with it because you can be sure to a reasonable extent that the better team will win because those sports have quite large skill gaps so all you need to do is correctly judge which team is better.

But Twenty20 is literally just luckswing. There's almost no such thing as upsets. Just about any professional team can beat any other professional team.

This type of sport has its positives. it's good for women and children and introducing casuals to the sport. it's good for a cheap thrill.

But twenty20 has the tactical depth of a puddle and it triggers the fuck out of me when you suggest otherwise
