Probably Miracle on Ice, but that was more of a cultural thing that isn't as relevant today.

Though ironically less famous in the US itself, Billy Mills winning the 10k in the Tokyo Olympics is considered by many to be one of the greatest Olympic upsets/underdog wins of all time.

MSU UM this year was one of the all-time greats as well desu
if people don't generally know what it is unless they're a sports fan, it's not a contender. if people who are fans of sports but not the sport that the event was in and they don't care, it's not even worth mentioning.
a truly great american sports moment pervades the entire american culture. things that everyone, even people who don't like sports, can point to and say "yeah I know about that". not very many things come even close to it, so there's really not many contenders, and many of them are racially motivated. for example, jessie owens, jackie robinson, and the black pride salute at the olympics.
depending on your generation you might include something about boxing (I don't know much about that but I've heard people talk about ali-frazier), and people in our generation might bring up the dream team, but really there's no contest between any of those things and the truly nationwide phenomenon that was the miracle on ice.

Thanks for the dissertation Captain Autismo. The real answer is 18-1 though because without it we wouldn't be here.

As a Sox fan, pic related is the greatest ive seen.
>>67708373
Definitely, and I don't think anything else comes close. It was college kids and semi-pros who beat a team that destroyed an NHL all-star team in an exhibition. Add in the whole Cold War USA USA USA factor and it's undeniable.
>>67708410
underrated

There has never been a great moment in American sports. The 2005 ashes series was the greatest sporting competition ever and nothing has ever come close.
